ASPCA Arrests Brooklyn Man over Beaten Shih Tzu

On April 3, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Agents arrested Alex Dykes, 49, for allegedly beating his one-year-old male Shih Tzu mix, Bentley. In September, our agents visited Dykes’ Brooklyn home to investigate a complaint that a dog had been beaten and needed immediate help.

At the residence, Agents found poor Bentley in pain, and they knew something was wrong. They transported him to the ASPCA Animal Hospital for treatment. Our vets treated Bentley with oxygen immediately, ultimately concluding he had a brain hemorrhage and a fractured skull and jaw due to blunt force trauma. He is now recuperating in a foster home.

Dykes was charged with one count of aggravated animal cruelty, a felony, and one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty. If convicted, he faces up to two years in jail and/or a $5,000 fine.

Looking at Bentley’s sweet face, we have to wonder: Who could do this to an animal?

I'm so sorry for this little guy's fate. It just breaks my heart. I wish I could do something for all of these animals that rely on their owners to care for them - when clearly, there are many who shouldn't be allowed to. Hope he gets better. Please keep us updated, and give him a hug!!

This just sickens me. Animals can't defend themselves humans have to be there voices. People if you see someone abusing an animal call the police or animal control. My heart goes out to Bentley. Bentley you should have bit the crap out of your owner.

Two weeks probation and 40 min. community service. Aaaarg.

Poor Bently! What a human piece of garbage this Alex Dykes is. He needs a blunt force trauma to his head. When are judges, and more importantly, the law makers going to figure out what psychology has said for a long time, abusing animals is a precursor to abusing humans. Paltry jail time and fines do nothing. Most of these people are sociopaths. There is no cure. Lock them up forever.

I have no tolerance for animal abuse....these people literally get away with a slap on the wrist. And, $5000 fine? really? That's it?? That's the price put on a helpless animal's life? Only two years in jail?? You know they'll be out in 6 months..."with good behavior". They need to start waking up and taking these issues much more seriously.

there's no self defense in this case --life in prison people who harm animals like this are a danger to society

PLEASE, besides jail and a fine, ask the judge to order that Alex Dykes is never again allowed to have any animal in his possession or be allowed to be in any location where an animal is located. Please, otherwise he will pay the fine, serve limited time and go out and get another animal and do the same or worse.

Please let me know when and if he's available for adoption. I don't know if I believe in signs or not but my best friend of 14 years, Bentley, went over the rainbow bridge a year ago... and this lil guy reminds me of him. Regardless I hope he finds an amazing home!

This is exactly why I donate to ASPCA - thank you for helping this baby - I hope Dykes is prosecuted and he pays what he did to this Bentley - Sometimes I just hate humans

what do u mean, "if convicted" he deserves to be taken into a cage with a bunch of men. See how helpless he is.
