ASPCA Rescues 50 Dogs in Bronx Dog Fighting Case

Friday, June 22, 2012 - 12:30pm

Nearly 50 dogs, ranging in age from 12 weeks to five years, were found yesterday living in the windowless basement of a six-story apartment building in the Bronx. The space, which served as a makeshift dog fighting arena, was littered with crude wooden cages and had the capacity for roughly 100 spectators. Raul Sanchez, the building’s superintendant, was taken into custody and charged with animal fighting, a felony.

Working closely with the NYPD Vice Enforcement Division and the Bronx District Attorney's Office, our team played a critical role in the rescue of the dogs, forensic evidence collection and on-scene documentation.

Also discovered on scene were a loaded .25-caliber handgun, U.S. currency, and other equipment associated with dog fighting—including dog treadmills, harnesses, muzzles, syringes and a shopping cart full of raw chicken parts.

"Organized dog fighting is a brutal form of animal abuse where dogs are exploited and forced to fight as their owners profit from their torture," says Howard Lawrence, Senior Director of Operations for the ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement. "The dogs we saw today exhibited scarring and injuries consistent with fighting dogs. We’re determined to protect New York City's animals from this form of cruelty."

The dogs, many of whom showed scars from fighting, were transported to a temporary shelter for further evaluation by our emergency response medical team. The ASPCA will continue to provide legal support to the Bronx District Attorney's Office to help prosecute the case.

The investigation is ongoing.

The fines need to be tough to show an example to others that currently do this or are thinking about it. What will now happen to those dogs that were forced to fight? THEY SHOULD NOT BE KILLED!!!!!

How about making these violent criminals fight eachother in front of an audience gladiator-style? Nothing like a taste of your own medicine and letting the punishment fit the crime...and last man standing gets the lighter penalty of a prison stay! Sounds more interesting than American Idol or any of those other dumb shows.

I think you got something there. I would watch it til last one of those criminals kill each other off!!!!!Do not want to waste tax dollars for them to play in jail and come back out doing it again!

Think about what you just it not the same as arresting the people who WATCH the pit bulls fighting each other. What makes it OK to watch humans doing the same thing?

This is a great idea!
UNFORTUNATELY these so called human beings are PROTECTED.

This would make us no better than the evil humans that fight these inocent animals. I feel sorry for those of you that hold such hate, yes this is awlful, no I don't think cruelty to animals is ok but I don't think hurting any other living thing in the same way ok either, I think we need to think with our brains not our emotions.

It' s absolutely disgusting! And they are monsters. It's all about money like most everything in this world nowadays. Our jails are overcrowded so they'll probably get a fine maybe some jail time which they may or may not actually serve. Look at Michael Vick! I turn off the TV if his team (who should never have allowed him to play again) comes on. Again it's all about money.

I agree about Vick. He is as disgusting as the next dog fighter and the eagles should be ashamed that they have such a low life on their team! Thanks to the ASPCA for stopping these unthinkable crimes against these beautiful animals! All dog fighters should just be killed. No jail time...just kill them..they are worthless anyway!!!!

Oh, that sweet, innocent face! I am SO grateful this was discovered and shut down. Please keep up your amazing work!

Until this becomes a felony it won't change. PLEASE sign this petition urging congress to make this a felony offense!
