Urgent: Save America’s Wild Horses!

Thursday, September 26, 2013 - 12:30pm
Red horse looking straight ahead

In 1971, Congress declared our wild horses and burros an integral part of our public rangelands and ordered the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to care for them as cultural icons. Over the years, the BLM has rounded up tens of thousands of our wild equines, often with cruel methods, and shipped them to tax-funded holding facilities where they are confined for the rest of their lives.

The BLM is again looking to apply the same failed model of round-ups and removals in revised management plans for wild horses out West. These plans must be altered.

If adopted, these management plans would decimate the wild horse population in the Wyoming Checkerboard, a two-million-acre mix of public and private land where nearly half of Wyoming’s wild horses live. This is certainly not the free-roaming vision Congress set out for these majestic animals.

The good news is that you can help! The BLM is accepting public comments through Friday, September 27, on the potentially devastating revisions to Resource Management Plans that will cull wild horses in Wyoming.

Please be a voice for our wild horses before their time runs out. Visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center right now to quickly contact the BLM. Urge the agency to adopt policies that give horses their fair share of habitat and keep them on the range where they belong.

On behalf of the horses, we thank you!

You are so right!! They need to leave them alone and let them run free!!! These horses are our history!!!! Leave our history alone!!!!

RJ Browne

Wild horses must be protected. Wild Horse Annie and her grammar school letter writing campaign along with many other individuals have worked hard to pass legislation to provide maximum protection for wild horses and to set aside and maintain rangelands for wild horses to range freely and remain undisturbed by humans. It is a shameful travesty how US government officials and ranchers have deliberately defied legislation and manipulated public lands for their own self interests.

Wild horses do not belong in any type of holding facilities. I strongly urge the BLM to consider management options that provide maximum protection for American mustangs and wild burros. Consequently I strongly object to and oppose any BLM actions to remove/eradicate/reduce numbers/sterilize wild horses from the Great Divide Basin and Salt Wells Creek Herd Management Areas, the Adobe Town Herd Management Area and the White Mountain Herd Management Area.

I urge the BLM to adopt policies that give horses their fair share of habitat and keep them on the range where they belong.

Wild horses are part of our heritage and one of our most beautiful natural wonders.
When will man live and let live and stop killing everything that they perceive as being a nuisance and in their way?

Lynda Haynes

Ihope I am wrong but I fear without some strong support in Washington that the BLM will just continue to run amuck where our wild herds are concerned. They have badly mismanaged the entire wild horse issue for years now. There was a special on PBS about the wild horses and whoever did that special needs to get involved again as it will take someone with influence and access to P.R. in order to truly have an effect on this situation. Hurry before it is too late.

What right do we humans have to claim their natural home? Shame on us!!!

Meg McPeek

Leave the wild horses in their natural habitat!!

Wild horses are the mascot of our western United States. Please don't take away their land. They deserve to roam free, they are beautiful majestic animals. They deserve to live their life as GOD intended. Humans have to share this earth with the rest of the animal kingdom. Humans are killing off all of GODs' creatures. This is not right. We are suppose to be the intellilgent responsible feeling animals of this Earth, why don't we prove it.

Janet Gebauer

The wild horses belong to all Americans. They've helped build this country and to see this happen is heartbreaking. Please stop the awful roundups and leave the horses alone!

Pamela Geier

This is wrong on every level. We are supposed to PROTECT these beautiful, majestic animals. Horses were meant to be free, to roam and live their lives happily. NEVER to be confined. NEVER. Human greed has gotten so out of hand. We are killing everything. We are killing our planet. This has GOT to stop and stop NOW.

Pleae don't make huge mistakes that you are repeating from the past. This country has broken treaties, promises, etc. Yet we publicly claim to be humane. When will this cruelty stop??!
