We are devastated to report that a three-month-old Pit Bull puppy named Joey was thrown from a car in Brentwood, Long Island, on Saturday. A witness found the tiny 10-pound pup in a plastic bag near the Sagtikos State Parkway, covered in fleas and crying out for help. Joey suffered three broken vertebrae in his neck and is recovering at the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island.

The ASPCA is offering a reward of $15,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case. This reward is in addition to a $5,000 reward offered by the Suffolk County SPCA. We are also providing a $10,000 grant to the Veterinary Medical Center to offset some of the costs of treating and caring for Joey.

“We were both outraged and saddened to hear about this disturbing case of violent abuse, and the callousness that was demonstrated by those responsible,” says Matt Bershadker, Senior Vice President of the ASPCA’s Anti-Cruelty Group. “While our ultimate hope is that these types of heinous acts never occur, this is a message that cruelty toward animals will not be tolerated. We are pleased to be in a position to help those who are helping Joey.”

If you have information related to Joey’s case, please contact the Suffolk County SPCA by calling (631) 382-7722.

I want to thank the good samaritans who found and rescued you. Now you will need to heal and hopefully you will trust humans again. I hope you get your forever home you deserve. Wish I could adopt you.

I often think I would like to volunteer for the ASPCA in some way. Then I read a story like this and think I would not be able to turn off my anger, horror and disgust in my peronal life. My mind and heart perceives this kind of heartless abuse and (almost) murder in the same way I view abuse of children and others who have no voice and who are completely dependent on others to live. To those who work with the ASPCA and animal welfare organizations "How do you personally cope with these types if incidents?"

Also, will we be notified if Joey's owner is brought to justice? I would like to see a photo and their name on the news. I would bet money that this puppy's crime was chewing something he shouldn't have or peeing on the rug. Shocking behavior for a puppy, yes? I would also bet that this person still sleeps well at night. Maybe the kind of person who will be committing a violent crime against another human being, probably someone weaker.

I hope for the best for you, Joey. Here is hoping for your speedy recovery.

Oh my god, TEAR, TEAR, TEAR! How should this person who did to Joey! I hope this person to be find and go to jail. Poor little Joey, I don't understand why people abuse animals for no reason. They can't talk or asking for help. They only want to be love! My 2 dogs are very loveable. I love them so much and spoil them. Joey, I am so sorry you are in suffer pain, hope you get better soon, hope good person or family who will adopt you, love you and play with you. Recovery speedy and get well!

Until the day we better educate the public about treating animals humanely, cases like Joey's need to be highly publicized and the criminal(s) involved given stiff sentences and financial penalties.

I almost deleted this email when I saw what was written in the subject line. This made me sick to my stomach and then tears to my eyes. Karma...I hope the individual that did this gets beat to a pulp and left for dead on the side of the road. Sick bastard.

I believe that there is a place in HELL for those who mistreat animals. In the meantime, on this earth, we all need to help bring these monsters to justice! Hang in there sweet Joey....all my prayers are for you.......

So sad...I'm so glad that he was found alive and now has a chance at life. People are so disapointing. Dogs are so innocent and so forgiving. He probably would have still forgiven the culprit even after this sensless act!

If people witnessed him being thrown from a car, did anyone get the make of the car or license plate? Wow. A lot of animal abuse in the news lately. Although, be assured it happens everyday. Nevertheless this is a sign of the times we live in and I think level of violence has reached a new high. Terrible horrible people.

I hope they catch the bastard.
