Illinois Considering a Ban on…Lion Meat?!

The length to which some people will go to eat “adventurously” has us shaking our heads in disbelief.

In recent years, there’s been a bump in consumer demand for exotic meats—including lion meat. Surprisingly, most lion meat seems to be supplied by businesses in the state of Illinois.

Where do the slaughtered lions come from? No one is really sure. One Illinois supplier claims the meat is the byproduct of a separate venture that sells the animals’ skins, while many restaurateurs who offer lion meat are under the impression that there’s a USDA-inspected “lion farm” outside of Chicago (not true). Whether the lions are actually coming from African poachers, or are discards from private owners and inhumane roadside zoos in the U.S., this is a problem.

Due to hunting and habitat loss, the planet’s African lion population has been reduced by half in the past 20 years, and there’s a strong case for adding lions to the federal Endangered Species List. The last thing anyone should want to do is glamorize lion meat and increase demand for it.

An Illinois state representative, Rep. Luis Arroyo, has taken action by introducing the first-ever state bill to ban possessing, breeding, buying or selling lions for their meat. The Illinois Lion Meat Act will soon by voted on by the state’s House of Representatives—if you live in Illinois, please help the lions by asking your state representative to vote for it.

Lions are quickly becoming extinct, we should protect these majestic animals, not eat them!

No one needs to eat Lion meat! This is ridiculous, and a case of just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Perhaps make it legal if you can be locked in a cage with one and kill it with your bare hands.

I do not live in Illinois but I am signing this. Anyone who would want to eat or sale lion meat has to be out of their mind. Please stop the insainity of this. Ban it.

Candice

Help them

Shameful.

I hope Illinois follows through with this...and all the other states will follow. As many of us are caring animal lovers and the voices for them I will support Ill. decision to ban. They need to stay protected!

Krystal

How do we get oregon and other states to vote in a ban on it? This is just wrong!

I worry that people are not aware of the great disaster that we're heading. There is no respect for life, for nature, squander resources, poisoned rivers, seas, every day with our garbage, our misery.
Because animals must suffer for our stupidity, our negligence. Now it occurs to us eating lions! back to caveman status, we leave evolution to condemn ourselves?

This is repulsive. Why would you want to eat lion meat? Just becuase it is out there doesn't mean it is safe to eat. THere is no USDA aprroval on it.

John

meat is meat. its a source of food. the ONLY reason it should be banned is cause the source of meat cannot be tracked and sourced. However if there WAS a farm outside Chicago.. (i live outside Chicago) id happily eat lion burgers and steaks.
