Urgent: Save America’s Wild Horses!

Thursday, September 26, 2013 - 12:30pm
Red horse looking straight ahead

In 1971, Congress declared our wild horses and burros an integral part of our public rangelands and ordered the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to care for them as cultural icons. Over the years, the BLM has rounded up tens of thousands of our wild equines, often with cruel methods, and shipped them to tax-funded holding facilities where they are confined for the rest of their lives.

The BLM is again looking to apply the same failed model of round-ups and removals in revised management plans for wild horses out West. These plans must be altered.

If adopted, these management plans would decimate the wild horse population in the Wyoming Checkerboard, a two-million-acre mix of public and private land where nearly half of Wyoming’s wild horses live. This is certainly not the free-roaming vision Congress set out for these majestic animals.

The good news is that you can help! The BLM is accepting public comments through Friday, September 27, on the potentially devastating revisions to Resource Management Plans that will cull wild horses in Wyoming.

Please be a voice for our wild horses before their time runs out. Visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center right now to quickly contact the BLM. Urge the agency to adopt policies that give horses their fair share of habitat and keep them on the range where they belong.

On behalf of the horses, we thank you!

Wild horses must be protected and not sent to slaughtering houses, shame on you.

These horses were supposed to have been protected by the passage of the ROAM Act. Due to politics and the politicians the act has not been followed. These horses are a part of the American heritage and should be protected as the ROAM Act intended.

These horses have lived WILD For YEARS. LEAVE THEM ALONE AND LET THEM RAISE THEIR OFFSPRING IN PEACE.

STOP LETTING THE RANCHERS AND OTHER LAND THIEVES STEAL FROM THE WILDHORSES!!

There is so much animal cruelty and abuse in the world. So much suffering, neglect, tragedy.
There are so many stories of animal cruelty with unhappy endings. Nobody in government seems to care about animals. So the cruelty and abuse is allowed to continue.
And the animal cruelty is not limited to just the public. Our government has been involved in more than it's fair share. Animals that should be left alone are messed with. Wolves, sharks, prairie dogs, you name it. And of course let's not forget the wild horses.
The blame for this travesty falls completely on our governent. Once again, why leave things alone when they can be messed with. It's time to break the cycle and leave the wild horses alone.

The BLM policies are UNACCEPTABLE! Human greed is destroying everything on this planet - ultimately it will destroy humankind itself - and that will be fully justified!
The wild horse population of the United States must be protected and cherished!

Responsible stewardship of these horses would includes vaccinations, designated ranges for grazing and gelding, not round-ups with planes, pens and slaughterhouses.

When does the government going to quit being involved in things that they do not need to be involved in. These animals were there before there was a government. I guess it is no different than the health care that they are involved in. LET THE HORSES RUN FREE AS THEY HAVE DONE FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS!

Ellie Heitkamp

These noble, beautiful and spirited animals deserve to be able to roam free. They don't deserve to be stripped of their freedom they so rightfully earned. These are the animals that carried us upon their backs during war and charged to their death to please us. Fight for their rights!!!!

Brook

GIVE OUR HORSES FREEDOM. It's as simple as that.

Can Congress help? Cannot they demand that BLM's wild horse managements 'plans' adhere to Congress's initial order ... "to care for them as cultural icons". Cannot SOMEONE in Government not protect Checkerboard for the horses? I'm born British, horse lovers all of us, now I live in Victoria, BC, Canada.
I'm working for the Bill C-322 now in Parliament to stop live horse import/exportation and the sale of their Bute-laced carcinogenic meat to tables abroad. The cruelty I hear about is outrageous. Those sad horses are captives, but why cannot the States allow its remaining wild horses to roam Free. The American 'wild mustang' is known and loved worldwide, it is an icon, it is a jewel among creatures, it means American history. Could Viggo Mortensen start a class-action suit from Americans who are having all this taken away from them and their country? Surely somehow the BLM can be brought to task.
