Urgent: Save America’s Wild Horses!

Thursday, September 26, 2013 - 12:30pm
Red horse looking straight ahead

In 1971, Congress declared our wild horses and burros an integral part of our public rangelands and ordered the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to care for them as cultural icons. Over the years, the BLM has rounded up tens of thousands of our wild equines, often with cruel methods, and shipped them to tax-funded holding facilities where they are confined for the rest of their lives.

The BLM is again looking to apply the same failed model of round-ups and removals in revised management plans for wild horses out West. These plans must be altered.

If adopted, these management plans would decimate the wild horse population in the Wyoming Checkerboard, a two-million-acre mix of public and private land where nearly half of Wyoming’s wild horses live. This is certainly not the free-roaming vision Congress set out for these majestic animals.

The good news is that you can help! The BLM is accepting public comments through Friday, September 27, on the potentially devastating revisions to Resource Management Plans that will cull wild horses in Wyoming.

Please be a voice for our wild horses before their time runs out. Visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center right now to quickly contact the BLM. Urge the agency to adopt policies that give horses their fair share of habitat and keep them on the range where they belong.

On behalf of the horses, we thank you!

Wild horses represent America's heartland as well as for the many years prior to now. The wild horses should continue to be allowed to roam freely and the BLM should let them be. To eradicate wild horses will be an inhumane decision. People of the past and present of all ages have enjoyed these icons of America. Future generations should have the same privilege and not be deprived. Most importantly, these horses deserve to roam freely! I urge America's government officials of America to come together in this matter to preserve our wild horses to continue to be wild and free.

Leave the wild horses roam free, leave well enough alone.

Horses are burros have been free for decades. PLEASE let them stay this way. DO NOT CONFINE them. These actions are what turn Americans against the way their government operates. PLEASE, no cruelty to these magnificent animals.

Michelle

Leave nature and wildlife alone!! Do we have to destroy everything on this planet?

God Put Everything on this Earth for a Reason, Not a Season.. Horses are Beautiful, and this is wrong.. Leave the Horses in their Natural Environment..

These horses are a symbol of freedom and have been here a lot longer than us. They are beautiful and should be respected.

Suzanne R

Leave them alone!!! They didn't do anything wrong. Please let them be free!

I have never been for what the BLM is doing they know why they want to kill the mustangs it is so the land can be used for cattle people that pay them money the BLM cares nothing about the horses and other animals there on there land, they are a government agency that is out of control doing nothing that the people want they make there own laws they should be shut down and brought into court for cruelty to the mustangs. I would be happy to put money into a fund to hire lawyers to bring them to justice what is wrong with our president is he blind or just turns his back on what they are doing they have no right this should stop now, it seems no matters what the people in this country want the BLM just laughs at us because they are above the law and the people of this country and that is all the fault of the president and his staff I am sorry I ever voted for the president that is in office that was a big mistake he does nothing for the people of this country and have people like the BLM doing nothing but destroying this country they are a prime example of when a government is no longer in touch with the voters of this country and they are all thinking they are above the law. BLM is nothing but a bunch of sick people and shows the rest of the world what our country is all about cannot run this country right but has agencies that pick on animals that cannot defend themselves only in America this can happen I wonder what other countries think of all this I am sure they think it is very sick as well.

i agree about the BLM. Maybe next time when people are trying to save horses they should hire horse lovers instead of animal-abusing maniacs.

What the BLM is trying to do is just depressing. Exactly what about capturing them "cares for them as cultural icons?"
