Urgent: Save America’s Wild Horses!

Thursday, September 26, 2013 - 12:30pm
Red horse looking straight ahead

In 1971, Congress declared our wild horses and burros an integral part of our public rangelands and ordered the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to care for them as cultural icons. Over the years, the BLM has rounded up tens of thousands of our wild equines, often with cruel methods, and shipped them to tax-funded holding facilities where they are confined for the rest of their lives.

The BLM is again looking to apply the same failed model of round-ups and removals in revised management plans for wild horses out West. These plans must be altered.

If adopted, these management plans would decimate the wild horse population in the Wyoming Checkerboard, a two-million-acre mix of public and private land where nearly half of Wyoming’s wild horses live. This is certainly not the free-roaming vision Congress set out for these majestic animals.

The good news is that you can help! The BLM is accepting public comments through Friday, September 27, on the potentially devastating revisions to Resource Management Plans that will cull wild horses in Wyoming.

Please be a voice for our wild horses before their time runs out. Visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center right now to quickly contact the BLM. Urge the agency to adopt policies that give horses their fair share of habitat and keep them on the range where they belong.

On behalf of the horses, we thank you!

This is so terrible. The are sweet animals and just need love and someone to care about them

By taking these Wild Horses out of their element & putting them in confined spaces is an obvious form of cruelty by the BLM. We should be protecting our Wild Horses by allowing them freedom on the range and caring for these Gentle Giants.

Please leave the wild horses to roam freely as they were meant to do. They are a symbol of FREEDOM and should be protected especially from the BLM and all their greedy associates.

Wild horses and burros must be protected. It is despicable how U.S. Government officials and ranchers deliberately defied legislation and manipulated public lands for their own self interest. We must protect these horses and burros and not eradicate their existence. I want to see the BLM keep them on their range where they belong with maximum protection.

I am joining the fight! Let's fight for them, let's save them. They can't save themselves, they need our help.

Jessica cruger

I AGREE WITH YOU AND WE DO NEED TO FIGHT FOR THEM BECAUSE THEY CAN'T FIGHT FOR THEM SELFS

ITS A BIG MISTAKE TO TAKE WIKD HORSE AWAY FROM THEIR OWN LAND AND LEAVE OUR WILD HORSES ALONE THEY'RE ARE PART OF PEOPLE'S LIFE AND NEED TO BE PROTECTED.ALSO THESE HORSE MADE HISTORY AND ITS NOT FAIR TO KILL THEM OR CATCH THEM BECAUSE THEY DID NOTHING TO YOU,SO LEAVE OUR WILD HORSES ALONE

It is scientifically wrong to eliminate horses from the range. Cattle are destructive, and are not MEANT to graze so many so long on land they will not re-energize, re-seed, and simply put, destroy. Horses are like the clean-up crew, reseeding the environment as they go. How short sighted it is of ranchers to want to eliminate the only animals that makes it good for their cattle to graze, the wild horses. Please don't let the ranchers and their short sightedness, their prejudice, and their ignorance dictate the fate of our national treasure. Save the horses. Save the range. This policy is misguided when the horses are removed. Damage to the range, loss of habitat to all species, is due to the ranching view of the range as their domain, and theirs alone, damn all the others of our fellow beings who happen to depend upon it to live. Please, this has got to be changed. Horses must be allowed to remain on the range, and they will coexist with the cattle. Better than the ranchers believe, for they are mistaken.

This is really a horrible treatment of these beautiful horses that the BLM should be protecting and not destroying . These horses are meant to roam free and were supposed to be protected. They are a symbol and a treasure of our countries heritage and yet they are allowed to be treated and abused and killed this way. Probably because of some wealthy groups greed. BLM this would be shameful and very sad for this country.

Dona Hinds

Can't believe that you would take this action against these beautiful animals - they need to have their space. Please let these wild animals roam free as they were met to be.
