Update: U.S. Horse Slaughter on Hold…for Now

We recently told you that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved applications for horse slaughter inspections at Valley Meat Company LLC in Roswell, New Mexico, and Responsible Transportation in Sigourney, Iowa. The USDA is likely to also grant horse slaughter inspections at Rains Natural Meats plant in Gallatin, Missouri, in the coming days.

This week we learned that no horse slaughter plants will be granted inspections until at least July 29 as a result of a lawsuit filed against the USDA by several animal welfare organizations.

This lawsuit buys critical time for our horses. The Agriculture Appropriations bills, which contain language that would prevent horse slaughter in the U.S., are expected to pass in the coming months. We are seeing building momentum for the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act, which would prevent the slaughter of horses in the U.S., end the current export of American horses for slaughter abroad and protect consumers from unknowingly ingesting toxic horse meat.

Please be a voice for horses TODAY: Urge your members of Congress to cosponsor the SAFE Act to end this horrific threat to American horses and protect the public. This is a pivotal time for horses and they need your voice more than ever!

I forgot to add to my previous comment, that the slaughter of horses needs to be stopped. I have signed petitions against it. Of course, I received a reply that there are too many horses so a lot of them therefore get mistreated, so this would at least stop that. I don't agree with that. I still don't think they should be slaughtered, especially the way it's done. Horses should not be shipped to other countries for consumption, let alone be slipped into the American market.
There is far too much animal cruelty - by sick people (by that I mean, sick in the head, people who just don't care, they care more about the money the animals they're raising are making them. No matter the reason they're raising them...horses for racing, cows and other animals for sale for consumption. Like pigs that are kept in gestation, cages where they can't even move, until ready to give birth, then put in diff. cage til after giving birth, then re-bred and put back in their small cage to start all over again, until they are too old. The same with chickens that are raised for their eggs, dogs that are bred for resale by the puppy mills, or for fighting, etc., etc., etc. It's terrible.

There are a lot of good points made, pro and con. In a perfect world, all animals raised for human consumption would be raised on green pastures and good grains. Processing (hate the word Slaughter) would be peaceful and painless. Our pets and recreational animals (horses) would be cared for and loved until they grow old and pass over. But it is not a perfect world. Greed and evil minded humans have f**ked up the world for hundreds of years and will do so for hundreds of years to come...if they don't destroy the earth first.

What is going on in this cruel world ? How can we stop the goverment of approving any Killing of the kind horses ? this is evil, thier meat is not for human consumtion at all ,plus this land is the land of the mustang , what the Indian will say who had soo much respect for such a noble animal ,Did any one think about their feeling , did any one know that a horse would cry if he is sad or in pain , does this make us any better than them? No, humans now are devils and vicious

Horse Slaughter has never been the answer, it endorses the very thing that Pro Slaughter preaches that is will help, over breeding & abuse it's a dumping ground for irresponsible owner, and the horses pay the ultimate price.... When I found out that the House Rules Committee Majority Leader Sessions would NOT even give Safe Act 1094/s.541 any debate on the floor NONE, or Horse soring Bill, NO discussion, makes me ill and so wicked angry, this is an open democracy what a joke.... There are all kinds of programs we could set in to place where are TAX dollar is going to good positive outcomes instead some of our politicians are working for themselves filling there pockets to NOT pass any of these Bills, I say GET THEM THE HELL OUT OF THERE....... I have called the White House twice a week have done everything I can every day, I actually got so sick getting the same rhetorical answer back from one of my Senators Rand Paul I finally wrote back and asked him to answer my question DO YOU WANT HORSE SLAUGHTER, simple right answer my question are you for it or not, have not heard anything back, go figure??? How corrupt some of our elected officials are and they need to get out of office what are we doing voting them back in each year, by god I will remember when voting comes around...

There is a lot YOU can do to prevent the commercial slaughter of U.S. horses! Please follow the action items listed on this site:

Commercial horse slaughter is extremely inhumane because of the flawed captive-bolt stunning process used (that was developed for use on cattle.) It is not effective for use on horses over 40% of the time and these animals are often vivisected while conscious. Please tell your family and friends to help U.S. horses today! Spread the word!

Watch Forks Over Knives if you care about your family, kids, yourself, healthcare costs, and it will also have an important effect for the horses though it never mentions horses or the environment but doesn't need to. Share it with others. Watch and share Paul McCartney's If slaughter Houses Had Glass Walls on You tube. Paul is my new fav Beatle. :)

Please don't slaughter our beautiful horses.

if a horse lived is life to the fullest it could be slaughter and eaten by the owner but not to the public (mostly because the public has no clue!!!!!)

I am also horrified by the fact humans can be so cruel to non humans. I dont want to think about it let alone see it. It makes me cry but then I realize making it invisible doesnt make it go away.
WE have to make it STOP. Dont purchase ANY products from a country that support this behavior.
Money talks and we can all participate in this if we choose to do so.
