On Monday, September 14, four eastern Missouri men pleaded guilty to charges connected with the largest federal dog fighting raid in U.S. history. Robert Hackman, Teddy Kiriakidis, Ronald Creech and Michael Morgan each entered a plea in U.S. District Court in St. Louis, while another man arrested in connection with the raid, Jack Ruppel, pleaded guilty to charges on September 4, in federal court in Jefferson City.
The eight-state raid, launched by federal agencies on July 8, spanned Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Nebraska and Mississippi, and resulted in a total of 26 arrests and the rescue of more than 400 dogs. The 407 recovered dogs—most of them Pit Bulls—and 100 puppies born since the rescue are being sheltered and well-cared for in a secure St. Louis facility under the direction of the Humane Society of Missouri’s (HSMO) Animal Cruelty Task Force. In addition to aiding in the rescue and collection of forensic evidence for the court case, ASPCA experts assisted HSMO in evaluating each dog to determine suitability for placement with rescue groups or individual adopters.
“The ASPCA is determined to protect our nation’s pets from dog fighting and other forms of brutality” said ASPCA President and CEO Ed Sayres. “Animal cruelty cannot be tolerated, and we are pleased that the five defendants are taking responsibility for the pain and suffering they inflicted.”
Because dog fighting is a felony in all 50 states, if convicted of animal fighting charges, those arrested each face up to five years in prison. The sentencing date for the four defendants who pleaded guilty this week is set for December 8, 2009.

What these men did was horrible and I do not condone it at all but one of these men is my cousin. There are more victims here than the dogs, such as his 4 children, and his selfish acts have now affected more lives than he realized. I personally am a supporter of the ASPCA and am one of the dog owners that goes to the dog park regularly and treats my dogs better than humans but what you are saying about these men is very hurtful. I guarantee you that he was not raised this way, it was just his own selfish actions. These men have families that care about them and I hope that the dogs get the same.

For someone to treat an animal, whom can not defend themselves, is a sick individual. I can not stand to see nor read about scum like these we read in the article. I could never even imagine putting my two dogs, who I consider my children, through any of that. It's wrong, and I hope those people get exactly what they deserve. I wish I could work for ASPCA and crack down on these losers myself, I know they wouldn't like to see my bust in there door. I do what I have to do to protect the animal. Poor animals, Please get better!

I think that the death penalty is in order for many crimes in the USA. This is one of them. humans are smart, we don't get into crimes if the penalty is strong enough.

When are people who fight dogs actually going to stop and think that what they are doing is wrong?? The people who do those things should be sent to jail for the same amount of time as a convicted murderer. They kill dogs, whats the difference? Some people might diasagree, but how else are we going stop what is going on. If the prisoner has a longer time in jail, maybe other dog fighters/animal fighters would stop what they were doing.

Quite simply, those involved in dog fighting should be put to death in the most horrible possible way. It's only just.

I know that some say and eye for an eye and some disagree. I am borderline mostly but in cases like this....I think that the abuser should be the ones put in the ring and let us animal lovers be the abusers. I have no time for cowards like this who feel the need to abuse and control such amazing things on earth. Alot of people with social issues have opened up to a new social level by the love of an animal. Who are people like this to take control of a life and choose its fate???????? Put the abuser through the justice system and then back through again.

Dear Kathrine s; most of Vicksburg dogs were rescued and liviing in homes with other dogs it's nt impossible to change them they were bred for loyalty and it's been abused and they can change if you give them time love and never bend the rules so don't believe it's okay for all ofthese dogs to be put to sleep I own a pit and it really breaks my heart to know they can change but no one gives them a chance and this is the best chance they haveto poverty every single person wrong and say WERE GOOD!!!! ASPCA has delt with this for long enough to know which are too far gone but most of them want to change....... Www.vickdogs.blogspot.com

The Aspca has improved somewhat lately as I understand that they have eased their stance that all pit bulls must die.The Hsus has just recently in public eased their stance as well. Although I still have lingering doubts about both.Still remember what the ASPCA did to Floyd Boudreaux's dogs in LA. Have these dogs really been saved? We'll see.

"Until one has loved and animal, one's soul remains unawakened" Wake up people. Be observant. Fight for what you believe in, even if it pertains to an animal. We are their voice, for they cannot speak! We are all deemed pet sitters for God. Do your part and participate! You may not be able to have a pet but you have the ability to speak on their behalf and direct them to safety. If you see a stray call animal control, if you see abuse call animal cruelty task force, if an animal comes to you for help or affection and you can't keep it take it to a rescue group. If more us had our souls "awakened" maybe their wouldn't be so many dog fighting raids, abandoned animals or cruelty cases.

Hi, While I was in the states I saw a report on TV about some rescued pit bulls. They got testet on their behaviour. One of the dogs was fine, from what I saw. Just did not straigth to the person and wanted to be cuddeled. They said that this dog would need to be but down cause it would be to afraid. What kind of crap is that? My dog is also from a rescue shelter (in Germany) and she does also not run to every person.. but she is not agressiv. Like the dog on TV. Skeptic but not agressiv. Before I saw that I honestly had a good opinion about the aspca but now I am really skeptic.

It is painful for anyone who cares about animals to see or hear about any kind of abuse. I'm a Christian, and I find myself shaking my fist at God now and again - asking, "Why?" People, there will come a day, whether you believe in Him or not, when He will take care of the abusers in only a way that He can. "Vengence is mine", sayeth the Lord. He said it, I believe it, and all we can do is keep working to help the animals. You can be assured, God will take care of the animal abusers. Thanks for reading.

This is to Russ ARE U KIDDING ME??? What do u expect the spca to do to pittbulls or anyother dog that cant be near another dog without tearing it or u or a child apart??It is NOT poison that is injected into the animal. its the most humaine way to put a dog, cat, or any other animal out of its misery. Do u honestly think that a dog that it taught to rip a dog apart run for hours on a tread mill be fed things to make them crazy is that fair?? When my dog of 14 years had to be put down I had to decide her fate and if u dont think that is hard ur nuts I held her in my arms and the vet waited til I said my good byes and I pet her and spoke to her with nothing but love so that this would be the last thing she remembered and I cried for a month, it was like when I had them shut the life support off on my husband at the age of 46 soi dont u dare sit there and bad mouth these people that does so much good for so many animals. would u rather they die like michael vicks took care of them drowning them electricuting them hanging them HOW DARE U!!!! All that u said showed ur ignorance. Im glad they left ur remarks on so we could tell u how ignorant u are, Your probably one of these jerks that takes ur dog into the woods and puts a bullet in there head U DISGUST ME!!!!!

If you people believe everything that you see the aspca do then you are a fool, and you who wants to work for the aspca are you going to be the one who sticks the needle in the dogs leg to kill him.

you probly wont post this on your comment site i wonder how many of the dogs did you kill? How many did you rescue, Dog fighting isnt a good thing i know and i dont like it but whats even worse is you the aspca claiming to care about animals, How many of them do you kill during the course of a year in the name of humanity, you simply disgust me you are liars decietful monsters the good that you do is over shawdowed by the bad , i seen a tv news show today a beautiful bulldog that you killed, one person holding the dog loving him and another woman sticking a needle full of poision in the dogs leg then the one holding him laid him down gentle on the floor , Ill never forget it, all the dogs that you kill in the name humanity, you are sickining , animal abuse is one thing but you are way above that you are completly off the scale with your horror and your trechery, i can see that you have alot of people fooled into thinking that your doing a good thing I know that alot of people that work for you will do as you want them to do for fear of losing their jobs, im just without anymore words

I recently had to take my dog to the animal shelter because she was continually fighting with our other dog; they were fighting for dominance and they would have fought to the death. I was devastated for having to get rid of her that I couldn't imagine watching them fight and actually enjoying it or forcing it upon them. I believe she has already been adopted out, too.

It is so disheartening and gut wrenching to see humans treat animals this way. Animal cruelty should be punishable with stricter more stringent sentences. Most of these perpetrators get away with so much. We have to unite to be the voice for these voiceless beings. I cant imagine putting any animal through this. Please write to your local congressman for stricter laws. Feeling sorry does nothing, we need laws in practice to take care of these heinous crimes. Sigh...please reach out to your congressman, every voice counts!

I am so grateful to everyone who helped save those abused animals. The offenders need to serve the maximum possible penalty. Animal cruelty is NOT acceptable and those who think they can get away with it need to be shown it won't be tolerated! I pray those rescued find new safe and loving homes.

What makes someone think that being cruel in any form is ok? These scum-bags 'could' get 'up to' five years in prison....if a dog had bit one of them, it would have been labeled vicious and been put down....hardly seems fair! What kind of punishment is it going to take to stop animal abuse and why do so many people tolerate it?
