Ulster County Update

Earlier this week, we told you about our support of a massive cockfighting bust that spanned three counties in New York State. At the request of the New York State Attorney General's Office, the ASPCA is still on the ground at an Ulster County farm, assisting with the removal, transport and sheltering of as many as 4,000 fighting roosters.

While our responders establish a temporary shelter, where the birds will be cared for and housed pending court disposition, law enforcement officers have arrested three individuals associated with the farm, where birds allegedly destined for cockfights, were bred and trained. The owner of the property was apprehended in south Florida, and according to investigators and an article in the New York Times, has operated an extensive cockfighting pipeline for years.

Several other arrests were made on Saturday night when investigators busted a cockfight in Queens and raided a pet shop in Brooklyn. Cockfighting is illegal in all 50 states. In New York, cockfighting and possession of a fighting bird at a cockfighting location are felonies, with each charge carrying a maximum penalty of four years in jail and a maximum fine of $25,000.

Stay tuned to for more news to come—and please consider making a gift to the ASPCA today. Together we can rescue more animals from lives of suffering and abuse.

I don't think it's racist at all to say that SOME aspects of some cultures are brutal and inhumane. It's simply true. In the same way, the US and other countries may be more 'civilized' in treatment of animals, but still have a long way to go in the treatment of human beings (unnecessary war, extraordinary rendition, etc.). And police brutality continues to exist. So many things. Pointing out the examples of brutality shouldnt paint the culture as a whole (many in countries south of the border are horrified by institutionalized animal fighting). Pointing it out isn't racist.

Sure, but technically speaking only when it's humans being hurt. Judging a culture from your own culture in situations outside of that is wrong and, yes, pretty racist when judging a *RACE*.

"I guess some cultures and people will never catch up with civilized society and if you say anthing against them, then you are a racist. Call me what you want because I could care less...its better to face reality, rather than be politically correct and fail to face the problems caused by these people."

I love how tolerant America is! We are so civilized and right ALL THE TIME! We should be able to judge one culture from a golden throne based off of our CLEARLY superior moral standards (drones, the ghetto, drugs, police brutality, political corruption, class greed, etc.). Also SCREW "those people" amirite? WASP 4 LYFE.

What is Puerto Rico? If you *really* wanted change, how about you donate to charities for children born into cultures with these "horrendous" traditions, lobby to your local congressmen for more schools in areas where they're needed?

It sure is easy to judge a culture from your clearly flawless western standards, huh? I really do appreciate it, as being what you'd consider an "illegal hispanics especially mexican(s)[SIC]" (i.e American citizen by birth of Puerto Rican ancestry) I certainly don't know right from wrong.

So hey, you know scientifically speaking humans have practically no need for animal meat, right? How are you in leading the charge to getting all Americans to become vegans?

Also; "This is fact."

I'm so glad these people are in jail. The fine isn't enough for this kind of activity. I love my chickens and wonder if the chickens could be butchered and given to the homeless and less fortunate for a meal. If it was in PA, I'd take some chickens to raise. My chickens are pets, and love them. It's sad that these people got away with this for years! So glad they were caught!

Sadly, most of the fighters will be killed, I've never heard of them being allowed to go to a sanctuary. And I wish they would have mentioned the name of the pet store too. But thank you guys at the ASPCA.

Thank you for busting these rotten, scumbags! I hope and pray they get more than a slap on the wrist! What in the heck is wrong with the people of New York that this terrible stuff goes on for years without any neighbors or anyone stepping up to speak of the outrage and abuse of these roosters? It is sickening - these people are the worst kind of scum on the earth. The people who attend are also the worst scum of the earth - blood money is what they want - they have no conscience, watching these roosters tear each other apart and they think it is fun
! Filthy idiots - I hope someone will get a list of the customers who attended and prosecute them also - confiscate the books and go after one of them!

Says pot to kettle.

Yes, I agree with Ron. The farm should be sold and profits go to a charity of some kind to help people, but not animals. People are more important that an animal, even though I love animals so much. We have people in our country that could benefit from the funds more so than animals. Feed the starving with the chickens so you don't have the expense of raising the chickens. They can be truly expensive and they are why God created them, to eat and produce eggs for us to eat! Just my thoughts.

Thank you so much for all you do to help these wonderful animals against such horrific money making fights. I hope they get the maximum time in jail that a judge can give them!! I would love to have those roosters pluck them in places that would hurt them the most!!
