Ulster County Update

Earlier this week, we told you about our support of a massive cockfighting bust that spanned three counties in New York State. At the request of the New York State Attorney General's Office, the ASPCA is still on the ground at an Ulster County farm, assisting with the removal, transport and sheltering of as many as 4,000 fighting roosters.

While our responders establish a temporary shelter, where the birds will be cared for and housed pending court disposition, law enforcement officers have arrested three individuals associated with the farm, where birds allegedly destined for cockfights, were bred and trained. The owner of the property was apprehended in south Florida, and according to investigators and an article in the New York Times, has operated an extensive cockfighting pipeline for years.

Several other arrests were made on Saturday night when investigators busted a cockfight in Queens and raided a pet shop in Brooklyn. Cockfighting is illegal in all 50 states. In New York, cockfighting and possession of a fighting bird at a cockfighting location are felonies, with each charge carrying a maximum penalty of four years in jail and a maximum fine of $25,000.

Stay tuned to ASPCA.org/blog for more news to come—and please consider making a gift to the ASPCA today. Together we can rescue more animals from lives of suffering and abuse.

Is the ASPCA going to kill all these birds? Or hand them over to a different facility that is going to kill them?

I'm glad these evil men got busted! These poor roosters don't deserve to be treated in such a horrible and cruel manner. I hope these people are punished to the extent of the law. Thank goodness for the ASPCA!

Thank you ever so much! You are extremely dear to me for this work you do. 4,000 lives free from hell by your work and countless thousands more-too many to count! THIS is the result of really TRUE love. You made my St. Valentines day very sweet with this news! I love you!

I'm glad they were busted, but the sad thing is, after the court case is over, they'll kill all those birds, as usual, tha animal loses because of the human. Those birds will never be able to be around other birds without fighting again. I suppose death is preferable to a life of fighting, but the birds didn't want to fight OR die.

don't even thin...

How true. But at least hopefully these men won't be doing this again any time soon.

Queenie Jeannie

thank you for helping the animals.

THIS IS JUST ONE REASON I AM SO PROUD TO BE A MONTHLY DONOR. I LOVE AND BELIEVE IN THIS ORGANIZATION WHOLE HEARTEDLY!! THE PEOPLE ARE AMAZING AND SUPER HUMAN BECAUSE OF THE PLACES THEY HAVE TO GO AND THINGS THEY HAVE TO DO TO SAVE ANIMALS CAN BE INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT AND DANGEROUS BUT THEIR TRAINING, LOVE, PASSION AND HUGE HEARTS FOR THE ANIMALS IS SO FIERCE, THEY GET THE JOB DONE, AND THAT'S MAGNIFICENT!! THANK YOU TO ALL WHO WERE INVOLVED IN THIS FROM BEGINNING, MIDDLE AND END. EXCELLENT WORK!! CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH!!

I'm glad that I donate every month and extra when I can. I am on a fixed income and really can't afford the money being taken out of my account every month but I can do without the $20.00 in order to help the helpless animals that we as humans caused the conditions that the animals are forced to survive in. They can't help themselves......it's up to us and we should do a lot more. The government should be a large part of helping with this. How much did Obama spend to go on his trip? How many homeless vets and animals could that have helped? That was the tax payers money he spent...because he could. How much does his wife pay for her gowns?...just because she can!!!!! There is a problem here that the government doesn't care about. That is where the most help should be coming from. Shame on the USA !!!!
