Update: 4,000 Birds Seized in Largest Cockfighting Bust in NY State

Ulster County Update

Earlier this week, we told you about our support of a massive cockfighting bust that spanned three counties in New York State. At the request of the New York State Attorney General's Office, the ASPCA is still on the ground at an Ulster County farm, assisting with the removal, transport and sheltering of as many as 4,000 fighting roosters.

While our responders establish a temporary shelter, where the birds will be cared for and housed pending court disposition, law enforcement officers have arrested three individuals associated with the farm, where birds allegedly destined for cockfights, were bred and trained. The owner of the property was apprehended in south Florida, and according to investigators and an article in the New York Times, has operated an extensive cockfighting pipeline for years.

Several other arrests were made on Saturday night when investigators busted a cockfight in Queens and raided a pet shop in Brooklyn. Cockfighting is illegal in all 50 states. In New York, cockfighting and possession of a fighting bird at a cockfighting location are felonies, with each charge carrying a maximum penalty of four years in jail and a maximum fine of $25,000.

Stay tuned to ASPCA.org/blog for more news to come—and please consider making a gift to the ASPCA today. Together we can rescue more animals from lives of suffering and abuse.

I eat meat, but advocate humane farming. I think promoting vegetarianism is a goid thing. Equating meat eating to cockfighting is idiotic.

Natalie

We'll said Anonymous in terms of eating. Humans choose to consume anything and everything on some sort of power trip. I myself have opened my eyes to the disgust humans cause and have made an EDUCATED decision to be vegan! Love LIFE!!!

I agree with you we need to protect these animals not use them for a demented sport if humans want to beat the crap out of each other let em no loss

Dear Anonymous, Perhaps you MIGHT consider the fact that the birds, UNLIKE PEOPLE, do not have a choice in whether or not they want to fight. Duh

Wow

I'm not sure how you took what Jen wrote as a threat. She was condemning the usage of innocent animals to entertain us by killing one another. She was clearly referring to cockfighting, but you jumped straight to human sport and then... eating meat? Completely unrelated. Seems like you're pretty defensive about SOMETHING...

You're right, HOW could I correlate the deaths of millions of chicken for the consumption of the American public to the death of thousands of chicken (and thousands more actually living) due to this bloodsport.

People don't need to cockfight, people don't need to eat meat. Yet from you're biased cultural standpoint, one is a crime worthy of life imprisonment, and one is unrelated and perfectly fine.

I agree with your point.I hate these animal cruelties , cook fighting's , dog fighting's and the legal form of serial animal killings such as hunting and factory farming all are barbaric, un- necessary and the end results is the same for animals. Like you, I don't understand this emotional/ intellectual disconnect of loving your Dog" but killing "pigs" for one unhealthy meal. Hating cockfighting but being OK with factory farming it is just an emotional disconnect. . For animals, it makes no difference what "your" intention are, as long as you torment them and kill them is doesn't matter is for fights or for meat or fur. The end result for animals is the same = be tormented and killed. just Google factory farm cruelty and see by yourself. Having said that , I thank SPCA for what they do .
If you truly love animals , please go vegan. Until then, willing or not you also participate in animal cruelty with each meal. You pay to kill animals for you. Just because you don't see the killings and slaughterhouses are conveniently away from you doesn't make it ok and doesn't make the crime any less painful .

Anonymous. I agree that if we didn't eat meat, it would eliminate the cruel practice of raising animals for consumption. Still, a famous animal activist and environmentalist says that it is a sad fact of life that we humans live by the death of a our animal friends (end of paraphrase). The least we can do is treat them humanely while they are here. Maybe in the future, we can agree to lessen our consumption of animals or not eat them altogether. I myself, eat fish and very small amounts of chicken and turkey, so I'm guilty of that. I do love eggs, and if chickens are raised humanely, I don't have a problem with that. Giving up half and half in coffee would be hard for me and I realize that is shallow, still, I use it. I try to support small coops who treat there chickens and cows with respect.

I agree with you totally Marlene, i dont eat red meat at all and i eat little Turkey and chicken, it bothers me yes the way they slaughter these animals, but God did put certain animals on earth for us to eat..but it is inhumane the way these poor animals suffer before they die! but for someone to just raise chickens to fight them and also raise dogs to fight then is insane..i am against it one hundred percent, and if i ever hear or see it anywhere i do report it!

Dasi Bhaktivedanta

Actually, God did NOT put animals on Earth for us to eat and makes that explicitly clear in Genesis and in other world scriptures and also the new testament as well.
Also... are you aware that the human form of life which God created, is an HERBIVORE life form. That's right; biologically, physiologically it is an herbivore form in EVERY aspect. Not carnivore, not omnivore, HERBIVORE. Don't take my word for it. It is unwise to accept blindly, but equally unwise to reject blindly. Please do the research yourself and make a conscious and informed choice. He is the seed giving Father of all living beings. He gives us ALL life, only we differ in form. Where there is consciousness there is a soul. The "ultimate sacrifice", nay, ANY sacrifice implies voluntary acceptance. These animals are given no choice, but we are.
I hope you have a wonderful day. Love, Dasi
