The Truth about Pit Bulls

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 - 4:00pm

“Pit Bull.” There is no other breed of dog—or arguably, any other animal at all—whose mere mention can elicit such strong opinions. Try a word-associate game with your friends: Ask them what they think of when you say “Pit Bull.” Chances are that by the numbers, their responses will be more negative than positive. And it’s no wonder: No other type of dog is as widely banned from housing, legislated against, or incorrectly vilified by the media.

How did we get here?
Pit Bulls were once widely considered ideal family pets—affectionate, loyal and gentle with children. But in recent years, these dogs have suffered tremendously from a combination of overbreeding, bad publicity and irresponsible owners. In reality, the overwhelming majority of Pits and Pit mixes are sweet goofballs who have gotten a very bad rap.

Learn the truth.
National Pit Bull Awareness Day, on October 27, is a day of appreciation and education designed to change perceptions and stereotypes about Pit Bulls and their responsible owners. Please take a moment to learn the truth about these wonderful dogs and consider rescuing one of them from a shelter.

Are you a proud Pit Bull parent? Please participate in National Pit Bull Awareness Day, and help us dispel the myths about these dogs by leaving a comment below about your wonderful pooch.

The so called "Pitbull" himself is not an pure breed at all. He was bred out an "American Stafford Terrier and an Bullterrier" This both breeds are very nice and good family dogs if there in the right hands. Both breeds have naturally a low stimulus threshold. If you cross him without knowledge about both breeds you will end up with a "dangerus" new breed so calles Pitbull. Top it with the same type of people and you get the biting results. Look up who has the most pit's.. there are black, drug deeler, criminals, pimps ect. Those people give this negative impressions to this breed. If raised propertly in responsible hands there are good family members and very playful. Not one puppy get born as a killer, we the humans make it. Still you never let little kids with any breed alone without supervision, even a littel Dachshund can bite...

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Pit babies, nothing else like it in the world when a pitty claims his family. He talks in many different voice levels, plays as gentle as he can. Has to touch you when he's sleeping. does sooo many different things to make you laugh.A big teddy bear on the couch. a shadow when out and about. I could go on and on. I love my Pit Babies :-)

i love, love, love this breed of dog. i would NEVER take another dog over a Pit. I have been raising two pits since i had my child who is now 3. Casper, my American Pit, yeah he is huge and scary looking to those who do not know him,but to my family and MOST OF ALL my LITTLE GIRL he is Very loving and gentle. he in now 2 1/2 years old. then my beautiful Roxy, who passed away not to long ago was even better with my child. they would take naps together and Roxy would not let my child get out of the fenced yard or off the porch if a stranger was there... so yeah people can say what they want but IF RAISED RIGHT these are the best friends for children!!!!

I have had three pit/mixes and pure, they have been the loves of my life. I am their parent not owner and they are my kids siblings and have been treated so. I have never loved a breed more than Pit Bulls and i will be the first to defend them! My first has passed on he was a rescue as they all were. He helped three children, that had been attacked by dog, lose there fear of dogs because he was such a sweet baby. Gage was the love of my life. My second was a rescue off the street. We found her and did all the proper things. She was never claimed so we went back to get her! She was my 5 yr old daughters best friend and my dying mothers constant companion. Our third is a mix and is my 17yr old son's partner. From the second they met. Pit Bulls have been a huge part of our family and will continue to be.

On May 15 at the Stephens residence in Vista Ca a much-loved family dog “Boots” (a 3 year old pit bull) was shot and killed by the Vista Sheriff Department. The Vista Sheriff Department was conducting a warrant search for the owner of “Boots”, Robert Stephens, at his home in Vista Ca when they busted thru the fence to the back yard and shot Boots to death. The warrant was for a probation violation, a bench warrant for failure to appear on a simple drug possession charge.
The Vista Sheriff Department is now charging Robert with PC 245 (1) (a) AWD (assault with a deadly weapon) alleging that Robert was using the family dog as the deadly weapon, Which is strike” under California’s Three Strikes law, they are also charging him for PC 69 resisting arrest.
This situation is particularly disturbing to me because a few months prior to this incident while I was visiting at the Stephens residence 2 deputies from the Vista Sheriff Department showed up looking for Robert, regarding the same probation warrant. At that time Robert wasn’t there. I talked to the deputies outside the home, with me I had “Grimm” on a leash who is the other family dog, a 1 year old pit bull who is the off spring son to Boots. Grimm was excited as we talked to the officers. The officers seemed familiar with both dogs and even knew them by name they where even petting Grimm and giving him commands to settle down. They also approached Boots who was only a few yards away confined to his kennel. They knew both dogs by name.
At the time of the shooting “Boots” was confined in a fenced back yard, there are clear “beware of dog” signs posted to the fence. “Boots” was doing his dog job by protecting his home and family. The officers rewarded Boots with bullets in the head while his owner was helpless begging the police not to shoot his dog. These officers knew that there where dogs on the property before they conducted the search. They could have used pepper spray or stun guns, or they could have allowed Robert or a family member to put boots in the house before shooting and killing him. At the time of the shooting the family was home, children where there.
“Boots” was a rescue dog. Robert adopted boots from the Oceanside Humane Society in 2012. The Humane Society didn’t think that Boots was a deadly weapon or menace to society when they allowed him to be adopted. Robert took great pride in his dogs, they where both well behaved disciplined loyal dogs and he loved them very much. His dogs are his everything. Now Robert is facing years in prison.
Robert E. Stephens is being held without bail at the Vista Detention Center, his booking # 14733119.
Please help.

i think the only reason why these dogs get in to fights is because the are doing this to them and that should not happen dogs all over the world are getin killed because of this non since its not right to nobody
