We have great news, blog readers! Earlier this month, Random House Children’s Books and Dr. Seuss Enterprises hosted a very special social media campaign to promote pet adoption and help raise money for animals in crisis in honor of the newly-released Dr. Seuss book, What Pet Should I Get?
As part of the campaign, Random House asked you to share the love you have for your furry friends by posting a photo of your pet to Instagram or Twitter. For every photo posted using the hashtag #whatpet, Random House and Dr. Seuss Enterprises would donate one dollar to the ASPCA, up to the first 15,000 photos—and the results were pretty amazing!
Thanks to animal-lovers like you, the 15,000 photo goal was reached within just 6 days! Even big name participants like BigCatDerek and AmyPoehlerSmartGirls both joined in on the fun. The funds raised from the #whatpet campaign will go towards supporting the ASPCA’s lifesaving services that help animals in need nationwide every day.
This is no small feat, and we’re so thankful to pet parents like you who shared photos of your animal companions! We again want to thank Random House Books and Dr. Seuss Enterprises for this amazing opportunity to remind readers that pet adoption is always the best option.

For fans of Dr. Seuss who remember the author’s love of animals, it will come as no surprise that pets take center stage in the latest work by Theodor Seuss Geisel.
What Pet Should I Get?, the newly released book by the beloved children’s writer, captures the excitement—and indecision—of a brother-sister duo as they choose the family pet. The book’s afterword details Geisel’s fondness for the animals he cared for during his life and notes the importance of pet adoption and animal care.
In honor of the book, the ASPCA is joining forces with Random House Children’s Books and Dr. Seuss Enterprises for a special social media campaign to call attention to pet adoption from a shelter or rescue organization, and celebrate the unique bond between people and their pets. We hope the campaign will serve as further encouragement to raise pets safely and lovingly in a forever home.
We’re asking pet parents to show the love they have for their pets by sharing a photo of, or with, their furry friend on Instagram or Twitter, and tagging it with the hashtag #whatpet. For every photo shared on Instagram or Twitter using the #whatpet tag, Random House Children’s Books and Dr. Seuss Enterprises will donate one dollar to the ASPCA to help raise money for animals in need across the country, up to the first 15,000 photos.
We’re grateful to Random House Children’s Books and Dr. Seuss Enterprises for this wonderful opportunity to remind readers that no matter what type of pet you get, pet adoption is always the best option.
Join in on the fun! After you share your pet’s photo, be sure to check out other pet parent’s with their four-legged companions at www.WhatPet.com.
The ASPCA and 9Lives® brand cat food have teamed up again to help feed hungry cats across the nation!
As part of their year-long Live Well & Prospurr campaign, 9Lives and Morris the Cat are on a mission to donate one million bowls* of cat food to the ASPCA—all of which will be distributed to non-profit organizations through the ASPCA Grants program.
The Live Well & Prospurr site, featuring Morris the Cat, is an online content hub dedicated to helping people look to their cats for inspiration. This year-long interactive campaign is rooted in universal cat behaviors (hanging out, playing, eating, sleeping and grooming) and is designed to teach cat parents how to "live well". Visitors can share how their cats remind them to “live well” and enter for a chance to win prizes. One bowl of dry cat food will be donated for every Tweet with the hashtag #Morrisfeeds, as well as for every entry during the qualifying Play and Groom promotions.
You can learn more about the Live Well & Prospurr campaign and help feed hungry kitties at prospurr.9Lives.com.
* One bowl of dry cat food = 1 cup; One million bowls = 205,200 lbs
Animal Planet has helped find loving homes for over 2,000 pets through a 17-city partnership with the ASPCA and animal shelters across America. As the culmination of these efforts, we teamed up with Animal Planet and PAWS Chicago to host the “Woofstock: Road to Puppy Bowl” Festival at Chicago’s Soldier Field on Saturday, June 27. Attendees visited the ASPCA booth throughout the day to sign our Adoption Pledge and download the new ASPCA app. The event featured dozens of adoptable animals from PAWS Chicago, and we were thrilled to see more than 60 of them found forever homes!
