Teen Who Killed Kitten to Serve One Year in Prison

HLE

The ASPCA applauds the conviction of Cheyenne Cherry, a 17-year-old Bronx, NY, resident who admitted to the heinous act of leaving her ex-roommate’s kitten, Tiger Lily, in an oven to burn to death. On June 3, she was arrested by ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) Agents for aggravated animal cruelty, burglary, criminal mischief and arson.

On July 16, in Bronx Supreme Court, Cherry unapologetically pled guilty to charges of animal cruelty and burglary. Waiving her right to appeal, she agreed to serve one year in prison and not keep a pet for the next three years. Currently jailed on a probation violation, her formal sentencing is scheduled for July 31. Cherry’s accomplice, a 14-year-old girl who allegedly placed the kitten in the oven, is facing charges in family court because of her age.

The horrific death of eight-week-old Tiger Lily garnered the public’s attention this past June, and justifiably so, as a clear connection has been established between acts of cruelty toward animals and potential future violence directed at humans. “Cherry appeared to show no remorse for her role in allowing an eight-week-old kitten to cook to death in a 500-degree oven,” says Stacy Wolf, Vice President and Chief Legal Counsel for the ASPCA HLE department. The teen also has a history of violent crimes against both people and animals—in 2008, she was arrested for committing the armed theft of a Yorkshire Terrier.

“The lack of remorse shown by Cheyenne Cherry, along with the complicity of a younger child in the crime, is alarming,” says Sheryl Pipe, ASPCA Senior Director of Humane Education. “It is crucial that legal, mental health and education professionals identify kids at risk of committing such acts and learn how to appropriately intervene.”

Someone threw a kitten out of a truck at my 87 year old grandfather's house about a week ago. He called my dad and my dad picked up the 4 week old baby kitten and brought it home for us to save. We tried everything but the kitten died. It had a upper respitory infection. We gave it antibiotics and food and tried so hard to save the little baby, but he died anyway. I cant believe the number of loosers in this world, and I hope this person who threw the kitten out the window suffers the rest of his/her life.

That girl is a disgrace to the human race and society. A normal person would not do what she did to a helpless little kitten. There is obviously something wrong with her and she is not normal at all. Her past history of violent crimes against animals as well as people should have been signs showing that she is an abusive person. A one year jail sentence is not long enough for what she did. This girl should have gotten the same mandatory as if she were to kill a person. Animals are living and breathing creatures just like people and why not have the same laws in killing whether it is an animal or a person. As for the 14-year old accomplice, she is old enough to think for herself that it is not right to kill an animal. If she is that stupid to commit such a horrific crime, she should face adult court not family court just because of her age. Both these girls should get the maximum jail term as if they were to kill a human being. Would they like it if someone were to put them in the oven and turn it on? We need tougher laws for people who abuses and kills animals.

This piece of filth ruined the name Cheyenne for me forever. Every time I hear that name I think of her ugly face and ugly soul.

That girl needs to be in jail longer than one year. She is a monster and deserves to stay in jail for what she has done. Better yet, she deserves a death sentence.

It is wrong that she ONLY got 1 year in prison. She should get way more and collosal fines and counseling. I read a man who kicked a poor cat in the face repeatedly faced up to two years in prison. She has a record and brought a 14 year old to do it with her. NO Matter what she should get way way more, anyone should for something as sick as that. Why didn't they? What she did makes me think she should burn.

  • Submitted by Stephanie at:December 19, 2009 12:00 AM

This is absolutely sick. Who the hell did she think she was? One year in prison for such a horrible act of violence and cruelty against a helpless little 8-week-old kitten is not considered justice in my opinion. Honestly, I think there should be a mandatory sentence of 5 years for someone to commit such a horrible act. Plus pay loads of money in fines, AND get some counseling. If they still don't feel sorry for what they did and haven't learned their lesson after all of that, they can burn in hell for all I care. Rot in pieces. There are some sick people out there, and she is one of them. I'm a firm believer in animal rights, and I will continue to fight for animals until the day I die. I wish I could have said more on here about how I feel about this but my comment would have been deleted.

I am on my way to becoming an animal attorney so I can make sure ppl like this suffer for their disgustingly immoral and sickening crimes. Each and every day we get closer to more justice being served for animals so keep it up everybody! Support animal legal defense funds, your shelters, and DO NOT PUT YOUR BLINDERS ON!!

My mother told me this story a couple of days ago. It's the most disgusting thing I've ever heard. When I woke up that morning, this horrid injustice was the first thought that seeped into my mind. I keep imagining the poor kitten's soft padding burning off, screaming for help. I almost cried again while typing that. This is murder, a kitten can feel just as much pain as any of us. One year!? What is wrong with our system?? She needs to be put away for at least 10. And absolutely no chance of ever being around someone's pet, let alone own one herself. She needs major psychiatric help. If she's willing to do that to a kitten, she obviously doesn't have a fraction of humanity left in her body and she will continue to put the innocent through horrendous pain.

  • Submitted by Misti Carter at:November 13, 2009 12:00 AM

It's sad that one year in prison for this act is called justice. Have we progressed so slowly in fighting animal cruelty that that sentence is justifable? She gets to own another kitten in three years?? That is absolutely not justice! We need stricter punishment for these people, especially repeat offenders! They should also be put on some kind of animal cruelty registry to make their community aware of their history. Everytime, I open my preheated oven and the heat burns my eyes, I am physically sickened to imagine the pain the kitten suffered through to its death while these sick, evil girls watched!

what she did to tiger lily is horrible!!! she should be put in a oven so then she`d know what it feels like to be burned alive.I think she should serve life for that! Thats just like killing a human. BRING JUSTICE FOR TIGER LILY!!!!!

  • Submitted by Lara Anderson at:November 1, 2009 12:00 AM

I thought her sentence was to be heard in October. She needs a longer sentence and some big fat fines? Why, WHY, WHY should she ever have the permission to own a pet of her own again. THis is no justice for TIGER LILY. The system has failed again.

  • Submitted by Eli at:October 25, 2009 12:00 AM

  • Submitted by Tami at:October 9, 2009 12:00 AM

Contrary to Tyler's comment, there is a BIG difference between killing a deer or cow for food and killing an animal out of spite. And a BABY one at that! One year in prison isn't going to work. She needs psychiatric evaluation. What happens to her should be based on that psychiatric evaluation. The same with the 14 year old. And the evaluation should take into account ALL past deeds.

I think what annoys me most about this situation is that she has a long history of hurting people and animals. To me this points out a lack of behavior/mental assessments before letting this 'person' return to society, I imagine she would have the same 'remorse' if it were a 8 week old human. There is never enough justice for the innocent.

this is so appauling i cant believe anyone could have the heart to do this, im from south africa and stumbled across this story trying to see if i could help cats, i am so disappointed that this girl is only going to get a year in prison. The two girls that were in on this should be sent to a mental hospital for at least 5 years. If she wasnt remorseful she will never get better and will carry on doin sick cruel things to animals or even people! this is really shocking and has really upset me, i hope they get what they deserve for this :'(

  • Submitted by Lynn at:September 30, 2009 12:00 AM

With no remorse, she obviously won't get better in prison. She should have gone to a mental institution for the criminally insane where she would be kept indefinitely until she was "well" since that day will never come. People who abuse animals often abuse people, too, so I hope someone will be watching her when she gets out. Killing animals is how Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy got started. A year in prison is not justice for that poor kitten.

  • Submitted by Diane at:September 29, 2009 12:00 AM

I was so glad to hear that she got a year in jail., for puting a kitten in an oven. I think the courts should have a mandatory sentence of one year if someone does cruel things to animals. no if , buts and whys!!!.maybe people wont do such bad things to them, and think first of what will happen to them

  • Submitted by muttlyman at:September 23, 2009 12:00 AM

I think it is counter productive to send a human to prison for killing a cat, especially a MINOR. Get the person some counseling. Prison is just going to make it worse and cost the taxpayer a buncha money better off feeding dogs and cats in shelters. So, you going to put the shelter people in jail for euthanizing the animals when they have to ??? Get a grip.

I cried and cried ...when I was 17 I was campaiging for animal rights and cared deeply for living beings .... this young person needs psychological assesment for a good 5 years or more and never be allowed to have pets or work with children or animals for their protection. This is a young person who needs help desperately before she hurts a living being. This has hurt me to my core. I have had my cats since they were kittens I would protect them with my own life if I had to I would die for them before they were hurt. I am deeply saddened by this news. I hope this young person evolves into a balanced human being.

  • Submitted by Irfan Khan at:September 23, 2009 12:00 AM

There is no justice one year is not enough to evolve a human being to compassion for life, this young person needs to be taught a lesson and needs mental help, this is a sad sad story there are no word to describe the emotions and thoughts of what happened to the poor kitten who suffered ......I believe this is the fault of the parent.....they need to be examined in their upbringing of this child and held responsible to produce such an unbalanced monster and threat to living beings in society. This is not just murder this is beyond murder. This person had some serious issues throughout her life.

  • Submitted by Una at:September 21, 2009 12:00 AM

Cheyanne Cherry was given only one year because she was found "less culpable" by the courts as it was her 14 year old accomplice who actually put Tiger Lily in the oven.I do not agree that this vicious and heartless person was less culpable for her role in this crime. Her agreeing to this crime and not removing the kitten make her as guilty as the person who put the kitten in the oven. This really was an inhuman and evil act and both should have to face the nature of their actions for the rest of their lives. I am so pleased at the response from people. It is silence and uncaring that makes these evil scum bags think that their crimes are okay or that they will get away with them. I am sure justice will be served here someday and I sure hope it is. Update: As this crime breached her probation, Cheyanne Cherry's case has been reviewed and resentencing will take place of Oct. 2/09 in The Bronx.

I agree with what others have said. LET THE PUNISHMENT FIT THE CRIME! Although I applaud the agents for arresting her, Cheyenne Cherry should be cooked herself, along with her sick 14-year-old accomplice. The fact that she wasn't even remorseful tells me she's a worthless human being and doesn't deserve the leniency shown to her.

  • Submitted by David at:August 6, 2009 12:00 AM

Unapologetically pled guilty? Appeared to show no remorse for her role? She's an inhuman monster which should be locked away from civilized humans in a dark, dirty hole 'till the end of her days. 1 year in prison and 3 years without pets? WTH!

  • Submitted by Sam at:August 5, 2009 12:00 AM

This woman should have got more time, and should never be allowed to have pets again, she obviously has no compassion for life. This story made me sick to my stomach and brought tears to my eyes. Just like in the Michael Vick case, what's to keep her from doing something like this to another animal, or a person? That woman is sick and needs to be treated as such.

  • Submitted by Anonymous at:August 5, 2009 12:00 AM

There has to be something wrong with her mentally for her to do that, that's just sick and twisted. A person like that has all the signs of being a serial killer, Just wait, when she gets out of prison after that measely year, she'll eventually be back in it for killing a human being. She deserved far worse than she got, I think she should get a psychiatric evaluation and be locked in an institution for the rest of her life.
