ASPCA Takes Swift Action in Bulldog Cruelty Case

Spike the Bulldog

When a tip came in about the suspected abuse of a Bulldog pup named Spike, our Humane Law Enforcement Department took immediate action. Working hard to make New York City a safer place for its four-legged inhabitants, our Agents often rely on the brave and swift actions of concerned citizens who report acts of animal cruelty.

To learn more about Spike's case please check out the New York Daily News story.

We will provide additional updates on Spike here at aspca.org as they become available.

When I received my ASPCA Action Summer 2010 newsletter, I was disgusted and apalled by the actions of Maria Aguilar. Individuals who abuse animals are cowards. What is even more shocking are the number of people who witnessed Spike's abuse for months, but never did anything. Whether it be the neighbors or Spike's vet. Considering the injuries sustained by Spike in the months leading up to his rescue and his prior medical records showing repeaded abuse, why did Spike's vet not report it earlier to the ASPCA HLE? What is Spike's vet's punishment/level of responsibility in this matter? His vet neglected to do their job. I adopted/rescued my first shelter dog, Sweets, 9 years ago. She was severly abused/malnourished and still to this day suffers both physically and psychologically as a result of that abuse. She is now 13. I adopted/rescued my 2nd shelter dog, Pepe', 2 months after Sweets. He was severly neglected and suffered from numerous health issues until he passed-away in June of 2010 at the age of 15. My father had adopted/rescued his dog, Tenzing, from a shelter in 2007. After my father passed-away in March of 2010, I did not hesitate to open my home to Tenzing. I flew back east in June of 2010 to pick-up the newest addition to my family. My sister and I would have done whatever it took to avoid placing Tenzing in a shelter. Tenzing is 14 and still suffers from the severe abuse he endured before my father adopted him. The abuse that Sweets and Pepe had suffered before I adopted them has effected my life tremendously. The abuser not only effects the lives of the animals, but the lives of the people who try to pick-up the pieces and care for the animals after the abuse. I donate as much as I can to help the ASPCA and my local shelters - but it will never be enough. Why people continue adopting/purchasing animals if they do not have the financial means or the the genuine ability to provide for an animal is a mystery to me. If I witness a person abusing an animal, I do not hesitate to step-in and/or report it to law enforcement. As a strong supporter of the ASPCA, the ASPCA HLE, and my local shelters, I have always firmly believed that animal abuse should be a felony. In a case such as Ms. Aguilar's, I pray she receives the maximum. She is a pathetic human being and a coward. If her family/husband witnessed the abuse, they are liable as well. Animal abuse cases must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We are their voice.

I hope Spike is doing well and he will have a happy life from now on. I own a bulldog and he is the sweetest, most loveable dog in the world. I could not bring myself to watch the video of what was done to Spike. I think about and pray for Spike everyday. I could burst into tears at any moment when I think about this poor pup. I truly belive in karma, what goes around comes around and that nasty, worthless woman will get what she deserves. She better hope she never runs into me one day. Same goes for her husband and that awful vet. I hope they are both being investigated and punished by the maximun allowed by law. Thank you ASPCA for all of your hard work. I could never do your job and I applaud you for dealing with all of these horrific cases.

Animal cruelty on this scale would TO ME be grounds to have this woman do a mandatory Psych sentence. Anyone who could do what she did without any sense of responsibility is a HUGE red flag for Psychosis. She's not safe for people or animals alike. I say get her treated..then throw away the key.

I hope Spike is doing well. What a beautiful little dog. How could anyone be so cruel to him. What can stop her from getting another puppy to abuse? Why was that puppy at the Vets office fourteen times? Why wasn't the abuse of this beautiful little dog reported? I hope Spike finds a wonderful home. If he is available, I would like to know--I would love to adopt him. Please post an update on Spike's health. Thank you for taking such wonderful care of Spike.

It just shocks me the cruelity people possess within them selves.I have rescued three dogs in the last eight years and I would not take anything for them. They bring me such joy and love. That woman deserves more than just jail time. She is a disgrace to the human race.It is a good thing I was not her neighbor.

I think its a terrible thing that those evil pet-backstabbers did to the little bulldog puppy Spike.(look at picture above) Those people are just heartless, crule people and I doubt they even care about the animals that they are keeping prisoner in tose tiny not even bigenough for a hampster cages! I hope Spike finds a forever home so he can lay infront of a fire and not have to worry about anything ever again.

  • Submitted by carol at:March 31, 2010 12:00 AM

it is a terrible thing that heartless people can just do that to a living animal. i believe that all people that feel like that are stupid, heartless, and uncaring and if you think like that you should just keep it to your self and not announce it to the world to see. and while you soak up all the so called glory the police are definitely looking for you to put you in jail. would you like to be treated like that(look at the animals in the cruelty blogs).TREAT ANIMALS LIKE YOU WANT TO BE TREATED!!!!!!!

That monster who did this to that pup should be treated the same way, see how she likes it. That monster should be put away including the husband and all the vets who didn't report this earlier. Spike deserves to have a happy life......he looks so sad now.

After viewing the video where Maria Aguilar is brutalizing the baby pup, it is quite apparent that Maria Aguilar committed several disturbing crimes that are supported by evidence, witnesses, medical records and the defendant's confession Furthermore, I would like to address a very important factor: Victor Estudillo, witnessed a series of criminal acts being performed to the baby pup for a period of 11 months. This is supported by the fact that the baby pup was brought to the vetirnarian 14 times. Therefore, you have 14 counts of animal abuse. The fact that there is a media coverage stipulating that the pup experienced months of abuse clearly indicates that Maria Aguilar engage in a course of criminal behavior for an extended period of time, specifically 11 months based on the facts presented. In addition, Maria Aguilar, according to the news, initially lied to the ASPCA police and denied the criminal acts and then admitted to the criminal acts, once she was presented with the video that shows Maria Aguilar beating the baby pup. Lying to the ASPCA Police and hindering prosecution are two additional charges that should be added to the two felonies Maria Aguilar committed. Victor Estudillo is in, the face of the public, an accessory to these criminal acts performed over a period time by Maria Estudillo because he witnessed the acts and did nothing to report the abuse. Victor Estudillo should be indicted as an accessory. I honestly feel as do many supporters, that the only way to prevent and stop animal cruelty is by fully prosecuting these individuals in an effort to stop the criminal offenses that are being committed. When individuals such as Maria Aguilar commit crimes the only way they can comprehend the severity of their crimes is by serving a jail sentence that will allow her and her husband to think about what they they did to place themselves in that cell. Maria Aguilar is charged with two felonies, each punishable with two years in prison for a total of four years. In actuality, it is really fourteen felony accounts because of each time the pup was taken to the vet to attend to the wounds inflicted by Maria Aguilar. Maria Aguilar engaged in a course of criminal behavior for over 11 months which is about 300 days where Maria Aguilar brutalized a baby pup. I send Spike all the love in the world because Spike is a champion

I just want little Spike to have a better life ahead and to go to a loving home; I know he will need special care. It makes me sick that people like that exist in our world and God forgive me but I pray her punishment will be great and that she too will suffer terrible pain. I am so grateful to the ASPCA for stepping in quickly to end this beautiful creature's suffering.

Unbelievable. After watching the video, it was just broken my heart. It is so unfair for this lovable, sweet bulldog to be abused--with a shovel! Animal cruelty is never a joke, because it's not the animal's fault. That woman should receive a dose of her own medicine.

It absolutely breaks my heart to see these poor animals, like Spike, get abused for no reason whatsoever. How could someone abuse a living creature that's so small and defenseless? Before my dog died, my parents had gotten a beagle bassethound, Bailey, and she was badly abused, too. She was not expected to live, but she lived a good 9 years with me and my family! I cried reading about what happened to Spike. He looks like a big furry ball of joy and love:)Animals don't deserve to live a life like this. I hope, pray and wish Spike makes it through his recovery:) He is an angel:)

I can not get spike out of my mind after seeing the news last week my heart was torn apart. That women and her family should be fully investigated and serve the maximum time (which isn't enough) anyone who abuses animals or children are sick individuals who cannot be rehabilitated or trusted. My husband and I have a beautiful 18 month english bulldog who is a part of our family, we would love to give Spike the loving home he so well deserves as do all animals. Please post details on how to go about adopting him.

My husband said he would be willing to adopt Spike which would include flying to NY to bring him home. What a darling dog and I hope his next family gives him all the love and TLC he deserves. Please prosecute this woman to the fullest extent of the law and please can an animal abuse registry be started (just like the sex offender registry). How do we go about getting local and a national list started?

  • Submitted by MJ at:March 16, 2010 12:00 AM

    DEPORT.

  • Submitted by Angela Gilden at:March 16, 2010 12:00 AM

In California there is a proposed registry of animal abusers. This long-overdue practice could and should be implemented on state and federal levels. Further, an arrest for this crime should mean immediate deportation for the human monsters who take refuge in this country only to perpetrate cruelty on creatures weaker than themselves. Far less serious crimes are deportable. Both these ideas, a national registry, and immediate deportation for animal abusers who have come here under immigration laws, give us all something to ask our candidates about before voting! I love my dog and I vote!!!

Why would this woman do such a thing to spike maybe because he's at her mercy and it makes her feel impowered. If this was going on why didn't the neighbors do something to help spike? I hope he finds a loving family to love him like he's never been loved before. She should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The punishment for the abuse and neglect of a animals should be alot harsher, because maybe people would think twice before hurting or neglecting a animal. I had to put my dog down in July because he had a very enlarged pancareas and was suffering. He couldn't eat, drink,or walk. He was in alot of pain. I didn't have a choice, and although it was one of the toughest things I had to do, I did it because I loved him. I miss Timmy every minute of every day! Please don't let this woman get away with this, because after all it was caught on tape.

If I can donate directly towards lawyer fees to help put her away, please let me know how. Donating money to lawyer fees is much more safe than what I would really like to do back to this woman. I own 2 bulldogs and they are the sweetest dogs on the planet. They are like my children. This woman does not belong in society for what she has done. She is not right in the head.
