Reward Offered in Horrific Killing of 25 Cats in Yonkers

The ASPCA is contributing $5,000 toward a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in a gruesome cat killing case that stunned New York’s Westchester County last week. On April 24, dozens of deceased cats in various states of decomposition were discovered in black plastic bags hanging from a tree in the community of Yonkers.

The ASPCA’s reward is in addition to $13,250 being offered by the SPCA of Westchester, the lead agency on the case. Shannon Laukhuf, executive director of the SPCA of Westchester, announced the reward on Tuesday. Other organizations contributing to the reward include the Humane Society of the United States, the Animal Legal Defense Fund, the Defense of Animals Fund, and Alley Cat Allies.

“This is a truly disturbing case of animal cruelty,” says Stacy Wolf, Senior Vice President of the ASPCA’s Anti-Cruelty Group. “While our ultimate hope is that these types of heinous acts never occur, this is a message that cruelty toward animals will not be tolerated in our society. We thank the SPCA of Westchester for its commitment to finding justice for these innocent cats.”

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the SPCA of Westchester’s confidential hotline at (914) 941-7797.

Please be vigilant in your community and report suspected animal abuse. Visit our Fight Cruelty section to learn which agencies are responsible for investigating and enforcing anti-cruelty laws in your area.

Jenn, you just basically repeated, albeit with different choice of words, the same message that Mike said.......what is it he should think over before speaking??? he wasn't rude to mention human abuse, he was saying as you just did, the evil is all needs to end, but, unfortunately, it only worsens year after year. Mike is a good man

Yes Violence against people is awful and violence against cats is awful....Point?

It is all sad. When anyone picks on/harms/kills anything, especially something weaker than they are (in all cases of kids and animals), it is a horrible tragedy. Some people choose to speak up for the children and other humans, and some choose to speak up for abused animals. It doesn't mean one is "better" than the other, or worse I guess in abuse cases, it means a person has chosen to speak up and that is never a bad thing. Don't play the humans vs animals game, nobody wins and you come off looking like someone who doesn't care at all and just wants to whine. Choose whatever platforms you like and go speak for them - it will all help our society, but you have to get out there and do it.

I agree with you Jane. Well said. My daughter is more of a "human rights" advocate...myself, an "animal rights" avocate. It doesn't mean that she is any less caring than I or vice versa. We are all wired differently. What we all have in common (anyone posting on this site) is that we do recognize evil and are appalled by it. Wish we could find a way to understand what happens (or doesn't) to people to make them so cruel. In the meatime, soldier on my friends, and help in any way you can to make this world we live in a better place.

Well said and true, Wendy.

so sad, but how right you are-we have become so desensitized to all of the suffering around us, when it really does begin with each and every one of us.

You need to stay on the subject . This is about animal abuse , Not your problems with other issues. Animal abuse should never be accepted !

What makes you think that someone who does such despicable cruel acts would not also do this to a child or a baby? It is a PROVEN fact that those individuals who commit heinous acts against animals will commit or have already committed atrocities against humans. Evil is evil, no matter what form it comes in.

Mike..evil is evil no matter who is murdered. This is heinous , horrific as is murder of the unborn baby!!! I pray that this monster will be found and prosecuted to the FULL EXTENT of the law! May God deal accordingly with this monster!!
