The REAL Scary Truth about Black Cats

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 - 11:15am

Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? We sure have. But guess what? Top ASPCA experts agree that it’s just not true.

Unfortunately, the truth is kinda scary, too: Year-round, black cats are the least likely to get adopted in shelters across the U.S. In fact, black animals in general take more time to find homes, says Gail Buchwald, Senior Vice President of the Adoption Center.

At the ASPCA, we LOVE black kitties. (Some of our friendliest cats, like Marissa, are black—yet Marissa has waited more than nine months to find a family. What’s up with that?)

Aside from the most important reason to adopt black kitties—that they really need extra help finding homes—here are a few reasons to take home one or two:

  • Their fur won’t show on your little black dress.
  • You can tell your kids you adopted a mini panther.
  • Black cats go with everything.
  • In most cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck.
  • You already know black cats are awesome—you have one at home! If you’ve got a great black kitty, tell us about him or her in the comments. You just might persuade someone else to give these felines a little extra attention.

We have had Midnight now for 4 months who is a solid black tabby. She is so loveable , friendly and fun . You can be in a down or bad mood and it's almost as if she senses it and plays til you smile. I wouldn't give her up for the world . Black cats aren't bad luck it's crazy people and superstitions that are . Given the chance I'd adopt all black kitties if I could .

We've had cats before, but I wound up taking in my daughter's little black male cat when she joined the military in 1999. He wound up being our best friend. He got us through hard times, and was so innocent that he didn't know if another cat attacking him was fighting or playing. He took ill and finally, in late 2011, we had to say goodbye to him. We miss him dearly and talk about him every day.

I love black cats. My first cat as a kid on a dairy farm was black and there is a photo of me at 3 sitting on the water heater in the milk house sharing a grape lollipop with her. Later in life I got my girl Noxzema when I was in law school. She got me through school as my best girl. She died of cancer at 15. I have my baby boy, Carson, 8 years old and 17 lbs, and he is the most affectionate being I have ever met. Black cats are very loving!

Hello and thanks for stopping by! My all time favorite kitty was a "kitchen kitty" think lunch gut~ Kitty named Ebony. She was sweet tempered, intelligent and playful. When she wanted something she would say "Naaa Naaa Naaa!" When she was perturbed she would say "GAK!" Ebony was my craddle baby! Ebony was an adorable loving soul! She was a naughty little meow cat as well! Unbearable fur suit naghtiness! I miss the Ebonest! If given a choice, I would take a black kitty! But the kitties in my life, have always come to me under duress! You know the tune! "I am a cute kitty MOW MOW! No body loves me MOW MOW! i AM COLD AND HUNGERY and I haven't eaten in MINUTES MOW MOW!" Thanks for reading!

My fiancé and I have two black cats: a beautiful and sweet Bombay [12yo], and an adorable, snug gable Burmese [3-4yo]. These two are our son and daughter, and as crazy as that sounds, we wouldn't trade them for anything in the world :)
