The REAL Scary Truth about Black Cats

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 - 11:15am

Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? We sure have. But guess what? Top ASPCA experts agree that it’s just not true.

Unfortunately, the truth is kinda scary, too: Year-round, black cats are the least likely to get adopted in shelters across the U.S. In fact, black animals in general take more time to find homes, says Gail Buchwald, Senior Vice President of the Adoption Center.

At the ASPCA, we LOVE black kitties. (Some of our friendliest cats, like Marissa, are black—yet Marissa has waited more than nine months to find a family. What’s up with that?)

Aside from the most important reason to adopt black kitties—that they really need extra help finding homes—here are a few reasons to take home one or two:

  • Their fur won’t show on your little black dress.
  • You can tell your kids you adopted a mini panther.
  • Black cats go with everything.
  • In most cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck.
  • You already know black cats are awesome—you have one at home! If you’ve got a great black kitty, tell us about him or her in the comments. You just might persuade someone else to give these felines a little extra attention.

I have a long history of owning black cats. They usually find me and have since I was a child. I was stunned to learn that the local Humane Society as well as the rescue center Happy Tails refuse to take black cats because of the 'satanic rituals' conducted in the area. I've never heard of a single satanic ritual in the local news, but they believe there is a rash of them. Regardless, in response to the question "What am I supposed to do with it then?" they shrug and say they can't help. I have a new black cat because of it, but that is appalling for Franklin, Tennessee.

Unless someone shows interest in a black cat., many government shelters do not bother to neuter or give shots to black cats as it is expected that these cats will never get adopted and it would be a waste of municipal funds. That is the current reality for black cats.

We recently adopted a 1 year old black cat from the county shelter. I'd like to say that we picked him, but the truth is he picked us. We were looking for a second cat for our home, and we were leaning in favor of adopting a kitten under 6 months. However, this "mini-panther" saw my girlfriend, plopped on his back, and purred like a motorboat. I had never seen a connection between cat and human develop so quickly. Admittedly, I was hesitant to pick a stray cat that had been in the shelter for two months because I wrongfully presumed that there was something inherently wrong with him behaviorally. We walked closer to his cage, and he began kneading the newspaper just at the sight of us. Of course, we adopted him.

I have owned various pure-bred cats and strays, but I have never met a more affectionate cat than Edgar Allan Poe, as he is now named. In retrospect, I am so grateful that we adopted a black cat. First, photos never capture the velvet-like coat of a black cat. It is something that must be experienced. Second, there is something incredibly gratifying that this cat defeated the odds against him (, as he was next in line for Euthanasia,) merely because of his coat color.

We just adopted a wonderful 1 year old black cat from the Washington Humane Society and he is so sweet, friendly and loving. The myth is BS and I'm happy the ASPCA is bringing awareness to this issue. Pitbulls and black cats -- need more adoptions to loving homes. We need to stop this bias and prejudice.

My cat kittikakes (Kitty Cakes) is a feral cat, my mom found her when she was a baby. She is adorable and sweet, and never sheds! But she does have an abrasive side, but its just cuz she is a feral but she does have a sweet side but she is only mean because she is feral/wild. I love her so much and her fur is very silky! she is cuddly an awesome. i love kittikakes
