The REAL Scary Truth about Black Cats

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 - 11:15am

Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? We sure have. But guess what? Top ASPCA experts agree that it’s just not true.

At the ASPCA, we LOVE black kitties. (Some of our friendliest cats, like Marissa, are black—yet Marissa has waited more than nine months to find a family. What’s up with that?)

Aside from the most important reason to adopt black kitties—that they really need extra help finding homes—here are a few reasons to take home one or two:

  • Their fur won’t show on your little black dress.
  • You can tell your kids you adopted a mini panther.
  • Black cats go with everything.
  • In most cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck.
  • You already know black cats are awesome—you have one at home! If you’ve got a great black kitty, tell us about him or her in the comments. You just might persuade someone else to give these felines a little extra attention.

My cat kittikakes (Kitty Cakes) is a feral cat, my mom found her when she was a baby. She is adorable and sweet, and never sheds! But she does have an abrasive side, but its just cuz she is a feral but she does have a sweet side but she is only mean because she is feral/wild. I love her so much and her fur is very silky! she is cuddly an awesome. i love kittikakes

i have a black cat at home, and he is not bad or scary at all. i have to cats a tabby cat ( he is orange) and a main coon ( he is black ) i love both so so much, but it seems like my black kitty is much calmer, and he will let you hold him for the longest time. my other cat does not really like to be held as much. but black cats are so sweet, beautiful, and they are perfect. people should try and have a black cat at there home! and im sure they wont regret it! :)

I adore black cats!! they are super sweet, and very cute! i have a black cat at home named midnight. he is such a wonderful cat! he will always let you hold him, and hug him as long as you want! the day we got him, was me and my mom were out looking for a cat. we were starting to give up, untill right beside me a little black paw was on my hand. i looked up, and the little black kitty was meowing with his paw on mine. like he was saying " please take me home". me and my mom giggled at the little guy! who could pass down such a cutie like him? certainly not us! so, we decided to get him! on our way out, one of the guys who wroked there said " its a good thing you got him, because of not we would of had to put him down the next day" i was so glad we got him! he turnd out to be such a sweet, and cute little guy! people who are scared of black cats, should at least give them a try! once they try it they will be glad they did!!

I adopted my first black cat 3 years ago.My son was just shy of a year old and I was concerned as to how Binx(my black cat) would be with him.I have never seen a cat be so attentive towards a child as she is with my son. When he cries she tries to sooth him. When he calls her name she comes to him like a dog would do for treats.

I adopted my black cat in 2012 and it was the best decision I ever made! He greets me at the door when I get home, waits for me on the sink while I shower, and sleeps cuddled up next to me every single night. He also taught himself to play fetch! I wouldn't trade him for anything.

I have a cat named midnight. He is black but is good luck in me and my mom's opinion. He is very loving and sweet although he was a scardy cat when he was a younger kitten. He's also a bit lazy and puts his butt up when you pet his back. Is this normal?!? Anyways, I hope people do not judge cats by the color of thier fur, but by their personality, whether lazy or active, loud or quiet.

The Florences

My husband and I have two older kittens (They are 9 and 10) and we decided one day that they needed a playmate, someone to keep them active. We went to our local shelter and had our hearts set on this little tortie we saw on their site. When we got there the tortie was very skittish and hissed at me twice so we looked at the other cats, there were many to come up to us but one in particular caught my eye. He was a BIG (Long Tall and with a tail like nothing I had ever seen) boy, he wathced me and my husband but made no move to come and see us so I asked them why and they said he has been here since he was born (Almost a year) and after watching all the people and their reactions to him (Because he was black) he has learned to never approch, if you want to see him you will have to go to him. So I went over and said hi (My husband was over looking at the kittens with his back turned to me. Shadow jumped into my arms and rubbed his face on mine and I was in love, I got my husbands attention and he came over to see and while still in my arms shadow turned around and did the same to my husband. We got approval to take him home that day and he is the most amazing (Still growing) baby ever and we love him to piece. (we have also decided that we will only adopt black cats in the future after we found the sweetest boy ever and he had been there a year just because of some superstition)

I have had the honor and pleasure of loving two black short hair cats, and they are by far the most affectionate cats I've ever known. Our first, Halli (short for Hallowe'en, of course!) died at a little over 16 years, and our newest rescue, Raven, is just as lovably sweet and affectionate as Hallo always was. And any black cats I've ever known have all been markedly loving and cuddly.

I adopted a black kitty once, because her owners couldn't keep her. She used to be a stray and her owners found her on the side of the street , meowing loudly. They said her rib cage were showing and her front paws were declawed. I fell in love with her immediately. She's the best thing that ever happened to my family! She is so sweet and playful, she's also kind of spoiled and is a diva, she's awfully funny and my daughter absolutely adores her. She is my best friend, and so cute!!!!! It's such a shame that it's hard to find black cats a family. If you ask me, everyone should have a black cat!
