The REAL Scary Truth about Black Cats

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 - 11:15am

Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? We sure have. But guess what? Top ASPCA experts agree that it’s just not true.

At the ASPCA, we LOVE black kitties. (Some of our friendliest cats, like Marissa, are black—yet Marissa has waited more than nine months to find a family. What’s up with that?)

Aside from the most important reason to adopt black kitties—that they really need extra help finding homes—here are a few reasons to take home one or two:

  • Their fur won’t show on your little black dress.
  • You can tell your kids you adopted a mini panther.
  • Black cats go with everything.
  • In most cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck.
  • You already know black cats are awesome—you have one at home! If you’ve got a great black kitty, tell us about him or her in the comments. You just might persuade someone else to give these felines a little extra attention.

I just adopted my second cat and its a lack cat 6 months old. His name is Salem, I can tell you at times he is loving and on the other hand he is mean he bite me twice but other then that he is ok. Both cats sleep with me Salem jumps in my lap curls up next to me and goes to sleep. So for my black cat sometimes he mean and sometimes he not would not give him up for nothing in the world.

We adopted 2 black brothers from the shelter after our beloved orange tabby died at 11, the shelter said they dont show black cats to everyone and are very protective of them. When she brought themto us she said they were good boys and I held one and my wife held the other one, and then they reache out to each other and hugged and we knew we had to have them both and they have been our dear companions ever since.

I have had many wonderful cats, but adopted (he adopted me) a black male (had to neuter him myself when he was a baby) cat 5 1/2 years ago. Let me tell you, he is the SMARTEST cat I've EVER had!! He knows exactly what I'm talking about. I ask him to look & he looks right at me right away. I ask him if he wants some (treats) & he runs right to me talking his little black fluffy head off! I ask him to come come & he comes running. I ask him if he'd like to see the birdies & he runs to the door looking crazy for them. I tell him to go night night & he runs to our room & jumps on to our bed. Etc.! He's my baby & I LOVE him to death! He'll pop his head slowly around the corner from our door & I scare him. He jumps up all excited & runs around the house. He comes back about 15 seconds later & starts peeping his head around the door again. We've played like this as long as a half an hour one time. He loves it!! He LOVES to play fetch, especially with bottle caps! He sits on my lap in the car & stays with no crying or moving around! The list goes on & on! I'll always get black cats from now on when adopting!!!! At least I think? Ya never know when they adopt you :-)

I adopted a black cat on Friday the 13th! Talk about pushing my luck right? She's a wonderful kitten. Very playful and very loving. She purrs all the time and loves being held.

Black cats are my favorite color of cat because they are quite beautiful and all of mine have been very smart and friendly. I have owned male black cats that were some of the friendliest cats I've owned. I've also owned 2 female black cats and these are my favorite cats of all. Also friendly but a bit more active and quite large personalities. Black cats are the best! I own 2 now and wish I had room for more!

I have the best animal ever. I adopted her from the shelter and she has been my rock for the past 3 years. She is a beautiful all black kitty with golden eyes. She is so smart, sweet, loves to lay in bed with me and I wouldn't have it any other way. These really are great cats to adopt. I wish I could attach a video of her fetching her favorite mouse toys. Please go save another life like her, she gives me so much love I would hate if you missed out.

I grew up with two black cats; Lady Diana, and Batman. Lady Di was old and crotchety, but she was still a sweet cat, and sat next to me when I played on the floor as a kid. I still have Batman now, and he's very energetic, but very sweet. He loves affection, and he's a good friend. He's very keen to my emotions, and comforted me when one of my friends died in high school. I wasn't even crying, but he smelled my pheromones, and could tell I was sad, and lay next to me to comfort me. You should really get a black cat. They're great!!!

I got mine two days ago. I used to have a black cat for 14 years when I was a kid. From then, all of my family have had this passion for black cats. After moving to Montreal we found two black brothers. My brother took one and I the other. Extremely beautiful, naughty, kind, well mannered. It is 4 months old now. I'm just loving it. Home feels better with it. :)
Black is the most elegant. Mark my word for it! :)

My black cat is amazing! Since adopting him my bf and I have found a roommate (who loves cats), thus significantly reducing our cost of living, and I got into grad school- so unlucky he is not!!!! But seriously- Maximus is very smart, looks like a panther, doesn't shed at all, cuddles like crazy, actually comes and cuddles on command! His purrs are deep and soothing, and his voice is quiet and subtle (unless I'm making a sandwich, then he gets loud because he wants some meat.) anyways, I had to comment because it is upsetting to see that people are color-biased towards adoptions! I mean please, it's a mini panther folks

I have a long history of owning black cats. They usually find me and have since I was a child. I was stunned to learn that the local Humane Society as well as the rescue center Happy Tails refuse to take black cats because of the 'satanic rituals' conducted in the area. I've never heard of a single satanic ritual in the local news, but they believe there is a rash of them. Regardless, in response to the question "What am I supposed to do with it then?" they shrug and say they can't help. I have a new black cat because of it, but that is appalling for Franklin, Tennessee.
