The REAL Scary Truth about Black Cats

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 - 11:15am

Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? We sure have. But guess what? Top ASPCA experts agree that it’s just not true.

Unfortunately, the truth is kinda scary, too: Year-round, black cats are the least likely to get adopted in shelters across the U.S. In fact, black animals in general take more time to find homes, says Gail Buchwald, Senior Vice President of the Adoption Center.

At the ASPCA, we LOVE black kitties. (Some of our friendliest cats, like Marissa, are black—yet Marissa has waited more than nine months to find a family. What’s up with that?)

Aside from the most important reason to adopt black kitties—that they really need extra help finding homes—here are a few reasons to take home one or two:

  • Their fur won’t show on your little black dress.
  • You can tell your kids you adopted a mini panther.
  • Black cats go with everything.
  • In most cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck.
  • You already know black cats are awesome—you have one at home! If you’ve got a great black kitty, tell us about him or her in the comments. You just might persuade someone else to give these felines a little extra attention.

Oh, yes, the black kitties in my life are absolutely joyous! We have Onyx, Spooky and Kosmos. While Spooky is no longer with us, the other two are the best pets ever! They are loving, affectionate and they have great personalities! If I ever won the lotto, I would buy a large tract of land and adopt every black kitty that needed a home!

We have a beautiful black cat Simba. We adopted him from our local humane society in Maryland. He sat in the shelter for over a month before we adopted him. We was told another family put a application in for him and just never came back to get him. Lucky us because he fits right in. He is always doing something to make us laugh. He loves our other pets, loves being around us all the time. Scares the hell out of me at night when all I seen his glowing green eyes when I thought he was out of the bedroom lol:) but I must admit hes adorable when I say his name and he will talk right back. Black cats are awesome. We also have a buff tabby and I must admit Simba fur does not get all over me or show up on almost anything I wear(like our other boys fur). I love my boys. Its about personality, not just looks.

We have seven black cats outdoors and one indoor black fluffy! We sure didn't expect to be surrounded by so many all black cats but here we are! Ive got to say each one has such a unique and loving personality. All our neighbors think we nuts but we look at there annoying yapping dogs and remember why we have 8 black cats!!!!!!!

I currently have a 10 yr old black polydactyl who is wonderful. I work at a local shelter and find that people WILL adopt them. My favorite cat of all time, my Nicholas, was all black. I will never forget I got him in 1985 the day here in Maine of Hurricane Gloria. The day I had to lose him, I came back from the vet, and wanting to gather my wits, I turned on the TV and saw the plane go into the second World Trade Tower. So I certainly can never forget him. He did bring me a lot of luck and love through the years, my "little buddy".

I have four cats! Two of them are my sisters, but they all live in the same house. We have one black cat and she is seriously the sweetest, calmest, cuddliest cat I have ever come across in my lifetime! She is so gentle and loving and never even meows. She loves to held and petted and will come right up on you and snuggle while she purrs. She is very social and will snuggle up to anyone and everyone who comes over, but she's also not needy or annoying in any way. She will let you pick her up and hold her like a doll and is excellent with children. She is sooo especially adorable and delightful that we fight over cuddling with her! As I said, we have four cats and they are all nice cats, but she is so special like no other cat I have seen before. Just so mellow tempered and loving I couldn't correctly describe her in words, you would have to experience her for your self. She is also the only one of four who never ever fights or hisses or shows any trace of aggression. She brings us so much joy and good luck and brightens everyone's day. She senses when someone is sad or stressed or hurt and will appear out of nowhere to comfort them. She is truly an amazing cats, even people who don't like cats in general lover her! Get a black cat, they are always the sweetest best cat you will ever know, they are special.

On my second black kitty. The first was a sweet, little, mutant, Persian who was funny, funny looking, incredibly sweet and my best friend. My second is a BIG boy named Shadow who is loud, loving and follows me everywhere. He's my new best friend. One thing though - black cats can slip outside without being noticed and it's very hard to see them. In addition to being chipped Shadow wears a reflective silver collar with a bell so I can find the little monster when he escapes!

My sister adopted a black cat from a shelter, and it was the best thing that ever happened to us. She is so silly, loving, and the most unassuming cat I've ever met! She's really goofy, and cuddles under the covers in the winter. We love watching her play, and her personality is wonderful--when my sister gets homes, her cat squeaks and meows, and talks to her all the time. Plus, she rarely sheds, and she's reeeeeally soft. We love her!!!!!!

We saw Rocky and fell in love! He is the sweetest, most loveable cat I have ever seen. He sleeps with me at night (when he is not playing), and is really smart! I would not trade him for the world!
