The REAL Scary Truth about Black Cats

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 - 11:15am

Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? We sure have. But guess what? Top ASPCA experts agree that it’s just not true.

At the ASPCA, we LOVE black kitties. (Some of our friendliest cats, like Marissa, are black—yet Marissa has waited more than nine months to find a family. What’s up with that?)

Aside from the most important reason to adopt black kitties—that they really need extra help finding homes—here are a few reasons to take home one or two:

  • Their fur won’t show on your little black dress.
  • You can tell your kids you adopted a mini panther.
  • Black cats go with everything.
  • In most cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck.
  • You already know black cats are awesome—you have one at home! If you’ve got a great black kitty, tell us about him or her in the comments. You just might persuade someone else to give these felines a little extra attention.

I adoptea black cat from our local humane society 13 years ago. She is still going strong. The stigma attatched to black cats and the people who believe them are absolutely ridiculous! It's kind of like saying stay away from that child they have blue eyes they are bad luck. So in turn if you wanted to adopt a child would you decide not to adopt a child with blue eyes?

Thank you for writing this! I went to my local Humane Society today and made a donation. I took some time to play with the kitties and couldn't believe how many black kittens and cats there were. I spent time with lots of cats and all the black cats were so sweet. I have a calico and a tabby at home, but if I'm ever to adopt again, I will save a place in my home for a black kitty.

i have a kitty named sparky we just adopted her yesterday black cats are a little shy on the first few days but they get much more comfortable a week or 5 days later and black cats love to hide well at least mine does.but to interact with black cats the best way in my opinion is to get a red laser dot. all cats love trying to get the dot so if you are looking into adopting a black cat please do so black cats are awesome!

In the past decade, we have owned TWO little black kitties. The first one was a rescue from a local shelter. She took about a year to come out of her shell (due to the fact that she was abused), but our Leah was one of the most snuggly, sweet-hearted cats I have ever known. She loved to sit on her humans (especially when we were upset or sad), stare out the window at our birdfeeders, but her favorite spot was on the top of our entertainment unit - the little sentinel would lord over the entire living room! Her loss two years ago to age was a terrible blow to our family.

Our second one is an adoption from a family friend whose cat "accidentally" got pregnant (she is now FIXED). Prissy is almost the opposite of Leah when it comes to cuddles - Leah always wanted them, Prissy decides when on HER terms. However, she is always playful, alert, and when she does cuddle, is one of the best. She has quickly become close friends with our large black dog, which we honestly did not see coming. I guess you really can't predict who your friends will be!

I would never, ever hesitate to adopt a black cat - we've had all colors, shapes, and sizes of cats through my lifetime, but the ones who have stolen our hearts the most completely have been our black cats.

A few days ago I found a poor little black kitty outsidein the hot heat. I decided to keep her. I have two boy kitties at home and by far our littie Luna ( our black kitty) is the most intelligent and most affectionate cat I have ever known and seen. Adopt a black kitty they are amazing luck and the perfect family pet.

Oh, yes, the black kitties in my life are absolutely joyous! We have Onyx, Spooky and Kosmos. While Spooky is no longer with us, the other two are the best pets ever! They are loving, affectionate and they have great personalities! If I ever won the lotto, I would buy a large tract of land and adopt every black kitty that needed a home!

We have a beautiful black cat Simba. We adopted him from our local humane society in Maryland. He sat in the shelter for over a month before we adopted him. We was told another family put a application in for him and just never came back to get him. Lucky us because he fits right in. He is always doing something to make us laugh. He loves our other pets, loves being around us all the time. Scares the hell out of me at night when all I seen his glowing green eyes when I thought he was out of the bedroom lol:) but I must admit hes adorable when I say his name and he will talk right back. Black cats are awesome. We also have a buff tabby and I must admit Simba fur does not get all over me or show up on almost anything I wear(like our other boys fur). I love my boys. Its about personality, not just looks.

We have seven black cats outdoors and one indoor black fluffy! We sure didn't expect to be surrounded by so many all black cats but here we are! Ive got to say each one has such a unique and loving personality. All our neighbors think we nuts but we look at there annoying yapping dogs and remember why we have 8 black cats!!!!!!!
