The REAL Scary Truth about Black Cats

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 - 11:15am

Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? We sure have. But guess what? Top ASPCA experts agree that it’s just not true.

At the ASPCA, we LOVE black kitties. (Some of our friendliest cats, like Marissa, are black—yet Marissa has waited more than nine months to find a family. What’s up with that?)

Aside from the most important reason to adopt black kitties—that they really need extra help finding homes—here are a few reasons to take home one or two:

  • Their fur won’t show on your little black dress.
  • You can tell your kids you adopted a mini panther.
  • Black cats go with everything.
  • In most cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck.
  • You already know black cats are awesome—you have one at home! If you’ve got a great black kitty, tell us about him or her in the comments. You just might persuade someone else to give these felines a little extra attention.

I have a black beauty named Karma that I adopted from the SPCA 2 years ago. She is a. absolutely amazing cat. Everyone of my friends LOVE her. Even people who told me they don't like cats are now in love with cats because of her. Her personality couldn't be any more of a perfect fit to mine :) I spoil her rotten with attention and new toys all the time. She even plays fetch!

I have 2 very special black cats I call The Njnjies. Alone they are Chit & Chat because they talk to each other and me. At work we rescued a litter of kittens from the property and all were adopted but the Ninjies because they are black. Then we saved a second litter and the Ninjies still went Unadopted and I ended up taking them home with me and have loved them dearly. They are beautiful sweet cats. Spoiled rotten too.

It makes me so sad that black cats are least likely to get adopted, people should not judge a book by it's cover! I have a little black kitty named Wally and I love him SO much! He's super sweet and playful, he's my baby!!!

My mom has had a black cat that she originally named picasso, but he's so fat we've re-named him mush over the years pretty much. He's actually very lucky, he's never really gotton sick, and is nearly 15 years old!

I have a black cat - his name is "Punk". I rescued him from the shelter I was volunteering at about a year ago. He was brought in with five of his siblings when his mother was hit and killed by a car. The kittens were found trying to nurse off of their dead mother in the road. Anyway, Punk was about five weeks old when I brought him home - and now he's a beautiful one year old. He's huge, not fat, just muscled - and he's the most affectionate cat I've ever had. His black coat is like velvet, and he has big bright yellow eyes. When he purrs, which is whenever he's awake, you can hear it all over the room. He was just neutered recently, and he's doing great - acts like it didn't even happen. He's a sweetheart, and I wouldn't give him up for anything. Here's a picture of him. Isn't he gorgeous?

I adore little black kitties, they are just bred for love, period, and that is a pure-bred fact! My grandma used to have a black cat named Holly, and every year during halloween she would have to keep her little kitty pooked up in the house because some people would go trick-or-treating in her neighborhood and mess with Holly. It was soooooo sad for Holly and my grandma. :(

I have a big black cat but he does have a little white patch. His name is Salem and he talks to us all the time. We ask a ? and he meows and sometimes double meows. We cant him him to stop sometimes. He is very gentle but tries to escape out the front door once in awhile even though he is an indoor cat. I wouldn't get rid of him for any reason.

I adopted a black kitty and her name is Wally. Shes the sweetest thing ever! I love her very much. You wont go wrong adopting a black kitty.

I have a Black Cat, I was going to name him Blackie, but was told that was "Politacally incorrect" So I named him Spotty Cat, he does have a little white spot, that only I can see. I found him and I love him.

I had a beautiful black cat for 16 years! His name was Oliver & he was the sweetest little boy. I do believe they are good luck, not bad. I was going through a bad breakup & was considering suicide. I was in the bathroom about to take some pills & Ollie walked in. I saw him & thought I can't leave him here to fend for himself, plus I didn't want my ex to have him! He was really my good luck charm cat. I want to get another black cat but right now I have 5 cats! My next cat for sure will be a black one!
