The REAL Scary Truth about Black Cats

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 - 11:15am

Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? We sure have. But guess what? Top ASPCA experts agree that it’s just not true.

Unfortunately, the truth is kinda scary, too: Year-round, black cats are the least likely to get adopted in shelters across the U.S. In fact, black animals in general take more time to find homes, says Gail Buchwald, Senior Vice President of the Adoption Center.

At the ASPCA, we LOVE black kitties. (Some of our friendliest cats, like Marissa, are black—yet Marissa has waited more than nine months to find a family. What’s up with that?)

Aside from the most important reason to adopt black kitties—that they really need extra help finding homes—here are a few reasons to take home one or two:

  • Their fur won’t show on your little black dress.
  • You can tell your kids you adopted a mini panther.
  • Black cats go with everything.
  • In most cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck.
  • You already know black cats are awesome—you have one at home! If you’ve got a great black kitty, tell us about him or her in the comments. You just might persuade someone else to give these felines a little extra attention.

My favorite cat of all time was Medea, a black cat I took home as a kitten from a nearby cat adoption center. I spent a morning playing with virtually every cat in the center, and Medea was the only one who was playful, spirited, affectionate, and never struggled or showed a claw when I picked her up and held her. She lived with me for 18 years, and I still miss her terribly.

We have two black kitties and love them to pieces. They both have very different personalities and don't always get along, but that's okay. We wouldn't give them up for anything. We have had quite a few black kitties and all of them have been great. We also have a dog and he loves them too, lol.

I have a preference for black cats and dogs. They are beautiful (like patent leather!) and by far, the sweetest pets, in my experience. I adopted a black Border Collie/Lab from a local pound over 15 years ago, and he still thinks he's a young boy, and is the best dog EVER! He is smart beyond belief, lovable, friendly and cuddly, and still tries to heard the family at every opportunity. We also adopted a black kitten a couple months ago from the same shelter. He is the most affectionate kitty I have ever had; purrs like a motor boat, gives kisses and massages without fail, and loves to include himself in everything we do! He also makes a beautiful decorative accent (along with my antique glassware)!

I went to the Dallas SPCA looking to adopt a kitten after my tuxedo cat Oreo passed away. I went into the kitten room, sat on the floor and before I knew it a little black kitten had crawled into my lap, curled up and had fallen asleep. I think we both knew right then and there I would be his new human mama. Nine years later he's a happy, healthy and handsome little man named Ozzie. He's the sweetest most affection cat and at 15 lbs still likes to crawl into my lap and fall sleep. I thank my lucky stars everyday that he picked me.

Black cats are AWESOME, so much so that I've adopted 3. Spooks and Sabrina and Blossom. They are a joy to have around and I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world.

I have a beautiful, sweet, loving black cat! She has been with me for 7 years and loves to kill the bugs in my house for me! She always meets me at the door when I come home and cozier up at night with me when I go to sleep. Whenever something is wrong or I don't feel well she knows and stays by my side! I love my little black cat!

I have a female blk kitten that was dropped off at my house. You could feel her backbone, she was so thin. My dogs cornered her in the pole shed and I had to put gloves on to catch her. All I saw was teeth and claws, she was so scared. I named her Love. She is the sweetest cat, but she will only let me pick her up and love her. She hides from strangers. She loves the dogs that cornered her now and runs with them morning and night to their kennels. Love has made a special place in my home and my heart.

My black cat is amazing. We found him outside and brought him in. The greatest cat I ever had. He's the most loving and affection cat ever. We call him lucky cause how everyone is says they're bad luck, but he's not he's lucky, he found a family that loves him day in and out. He's so smart its like having a baby. Lol
