The REAL Scary Truth about Black Cats

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 - 11:15am

Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? We sure have. But guess what? Top ASPCA experts agree that it’s just not true.

At the ASPCA, we LOVE black kitties. (Some of our friendliest cats, like Marissa, are black—yet Marissa has waited more than nine months to find a family. What’s up with that?)

Aside from the most important reason to adopt black kitties—that they really need extra help finding homes—here are a few reasons to take home one or two:

  • Their fur won’t show on your little black dress.
  • You can tell your kids you adopted a mini panther.
  • Black cats go with everything.
  • In most cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck.
  • You already know black cats are awesome—you have one at home! If you’ve got a great black kitty, tell us about him or her in the comments. You just might persuade someone else to give these felines a little extra attention.

I have two black kitties. It's so funny everyone always asks me how can I tell them apart. To me they look so different. Free, she is a rescue who was going to get put down because no one wanted her, is so lady like doesn't like attention on the other hand Kyle is such a boy he plays fetch he rolls over he drinks water from the toilet (gross I know) They might look alike but yet so different. They are the best cats in the world I wouldn't trade them for the world. And as a added bonus they go with everything... :-)

My black cat "Chill" was found in an abandoned home. I got him at about 6 weeks. He is the most unique cat I've ever had. He loves to play fetch with me, just like a dog. He's now 3 years old, and I hope he'll be around forever. His name fits him...he loves to lay on top of the sofa, with his paws hanging over the edge & just "Chill" all day long.

We have three black cats we used to have four but recently lost our beloved Phantom we had him since he was a kitten he was 16 yrs old. They are all rescues . Today in fact is my baby girl Jettzias 3 rd birthday Bear came from Friends of Michican animal rescue we drove all the way from Cleveland to get him he's going on two then there's Raven she's six . We love our black cats and we always adopt black cats because they are the least likely to get adopted they are so awesome thanks for listening

We adopted Nala from The Buddy Foundation in Arlington Heights, IL when she was about 4 months old. Out of our 4 adopted pets (2 cats & 2 dogs) she is the sweetest, most gentle, loving one! She loves the dogs and always finds a way to cuddle with them! She looks like a black panther with big, bright green eyes! Always consider a black cat or dog to adopt....they are the sweetest!

I have 4 black cats and they are my lucky charm....They have such deep green eyes. Its a shame no one wants them. Its all about looks. Everyone likes different color cats. They think black are boring....NOT!!!!

We have two black cats, Licorice and Satch. Licorice is a fierce little princess of 17 yrs. and Satch, who is awesome and athletic just like his namesake, Satchel Paige.

I have a black/gray cat named Snooky. He was only 2 months old when my sister-in-law gave him to me. This little guy is now 9 years old. When he was a kitten, the person who had him abused him and my sister-in-law's brother saw this and went over to his house which was across the street. He grabbed him by his neckcollar and said some not to mention words to this other person. Anyways, he took the kitten from him and reported the guy to animal abuse. The person didn't care that he took the kitten, cause he said he didn't want him and wanted him to come outside and just leave!
Well, needless to say this cat, my snooky, is very smart! He will open the mail door we have on the wall and scoop the mail on the table for us(that is if it's able for him). He doesn't like my husband to smoke, so he takes his cigarettes from his lips before it lits it and stomp on the floor with it, whereas it is crushed. He also is a good protector of us. People are more afraid of Snooky because of his growl(which is stronger than my dog, Gina). He loves to play with his toys and go on the treehouse we have for our cats. By the way, I have 2 other cats as well! They all get along, sometimes they have their squabbles, but for the most part, they play together. They all are so lovable and show affection. I wouldn't trade them for all the money in the world! Snooky looks after the other 2 and Gina, the dog, he grew up with her! Don't hesitate to adopt a black kitten/cat, cause they are beautiful cats to own and you won't be disappointed. I never was with Snooky, I am so glad my sister-in-law's brother took him from that miserable person. I thank God for bringing Snooky to us.

We have a black cat and feed a black feral cat as well. Both are male and are affectionate, gentle and very friendly. I was never afraid of black cats, but these 2 are proof positive that the fear is a myth.

My black kitty is named smoke. He is the most loving and loyal kitty I have ever had. He'd just love to be around doing his own thing when i'm out working in the yard or relax on my lap when I'm doing the same. When I call his name, he would come running to be with me. He was never a pest, just loved to be around.

I have 2 black cats and they are the best cats I have ever had. Menace was 4 weeks old when I found her under my steps meowing, she is my cuddler. I adopted Mork when he was 6 months old because he talked alot. They have become very vocal best friends. Everyone should have a black cat they are awesome!
