The REAL Scary Truth about Black Cats

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 - 11:15am

Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? We sure have. But guess what? Top ASPCA experts agree that it’s just not true.

Unfortunately, the truth is kinda scary, too: Year-round, black cats are the least likely to get adopted in shelters across the U.S. In fact, black animals in general take more time to find homes, says Gail Buchwald, Senior Vice President of the Adoption Center.

At the ASPCA, we LOVE black kitties. (Some of our friendliest cats, like Marissa, are black—yet Marissa has waited more than nine months to find a family. What’s up with that?)

Aside from the most important reason to adopt black kitties—that they really need extra help finding homes—here are a few reasons to take home one or two:

  • Their fur won’t show on your little black dress.
  • You can tell your kids you adopted a mini panther.
  • Black cats go with everything.
  • In most cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck.
  • You already know black cats are awesome—you have one at home! If you’ve got a great black kitty, tell us about him or her in the comments. You just might persuade someone else to give these felines a little extra attention.

I have several black cats. They are just as sweet and playful as can be, and very intelligent. Mine are very well-behaved. One sleeps on the bed with me, right beside me, and muffs me and gives me kitty kisses. Mine are long and short hair and I seldom see any black cat hairs on furniture, carpet, or my clothes.

We had a black cat for 14 years. He was awesome! Friendly with everyone. Had a great personality. He wore his emotions outwardly. When he had an attitude - he showed it. When he was playful - there was no stopping him. Funniest cat we ever owned! Loved him - Miss him!

My black is Zeusy. He is almost four and has to be near me most of the time. He is a real lover and I just don't know how I am ever going to get along without him someday. I wish I would have gotten his sister when I got him. He loves to be held and loved and loves his tabby cat sister Miss Winnie very much. If I could, I would adopt more.

My Beauty is an amazing cat. Love's to sit on your head. Always wants to be close to humans. Very intelligent and gentle unless your a wild bird.

I rescued my two black kitties from a feral litter I found near my house (I rescued all of them, but only two were black). They're both all black with yellow eyes. Bosco is a very large, long-haired cat who is so sweet but is sometimes afraid of his own shadow. Matewan is large (i.e., pudgy) medium-haired cat who is both thoughtful and very sweet. They're both 10 years old now, happy and healthy and safe.

I have 2 cats, Zhack and Zhoe and a dog named Koko, all adopted.A few years ago, I adopted my little Zhack for the very reason it was the week before Halloween and I knew no one would adopt him and I was afraid he would get hurt. He was the only black cat and not the pretiest of the bunch I had to chose from but nevertheless I wanted to protect him. He has repaid me back exponentially, as he is the sweetest, warmest, most loving cat I have ever had. So please adopt black cats, their fur is so shiny and their eyes are beautiful!

I adopted my black Bombay from the ASPCA in October 2009, and let me tell you that it was the best decision of my life!! I have never had such a strong connection with a pet. He has a "dog-like" personality where he plays fetch for hours and even sits on command!! He cuddles with every person that comes into my house and changes the minds of every person that was once weary about cats. I love my Dexter Halloween so much! Save the black kitties!

After a feral mama had 4 gorgeous kittens under the porch of a Victorian home where I rent the entire upstairs, we had 3 beautiful shiny black babies and a gray. I found homes for 2 of the black kittens but ending up adopting the gray male and a black female. They are both wonderful, but the black girl has the most endearing ways of putting her dear back up close to you and making sure her "question-mark tail" catches your attention first! That way she makes sure she gets the first round of petting! I had never owned a blackie but would highly recommend that everyone consider it!

i was looking for a new Kitten after my elderly tiger went to her reward. i ended up adopting a 9ish month old black juvenile named Bear. my heart just broke when the humane society volunteer told me that he had been found outside of the doors and had been in at the shelter ever since. he is big and beautiful, a little clumsy but just a lover. i am an advocate for black kitties.
