These products are made in a single, specialized facility. In cooperation with the Food and Drug Administration, P&G determined that some products made at this facility have the potential for Salmonella contamination. No Salmonella-related illnesses have been reported, but as a precautionary measure, P&G is recalling all products made at this facility.

Anyone who has purchased this food should stop feeding it to their pet immediately. Although pets are fairly resistant to Salmonella-related disease, affected pets may show decreased appetite, fever, lethargy, vomiting, abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. Humans should avoid contact with suspect food and follow strict hand washing procedures. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

Visit the Iams website for information on refunds and a complete list of the recalled foods.

I recommend the online dog food adviser. When we first adopted our dog, Costco was closed, so we bought Iams at Walmart. Iams, and other premium brand foods were bought by P & G. They've acquired more companies as well. Since I could not afford to feed Organic, we found Costco's Kirkland was rated 4 stars, and he's doing very well on it. They should make a law, that when a food company is sold, it should be labeled Proctor & Gambel, not Iams.

My 2 year old indoor cat loves IAMS dry Proactive Health food; refused all others, until I purchased a new 6.8 lb. bag about 7/25/12. She slowly stopped eating (and she's OCD wanting her dish full of fresh food and keeping her from over-eating is a routine), and by Friday was not sleeping in her usual towel-covered favorite spot next to my bed. In summation, took her to the Vet today and hse had a fever over 105, hadn't eaten a morsel for 2 days. She's on meds, and had an injection and I bought some new food there. Delaying any change in her diet, I dropped a few morsels of the new food into her dish on top of the Iams and she gobbled them up, leaving the other in place. She's since tried to eat more after I put some into a clean bowl for her. Something is not right with that food. She may not have become ill with it, but it's not the same food as I've bought her all along. Also, the link to IAMs pet food recall doesn't work, and I went to their website myself and it's hopeless.

I have been feeding my dogs IAMS for about 3 years now. They both have been to the vet for checkups and have been found to be in good health. They both get the mini-chunks. So, I don't understand why others are experiencing these symptoms. Could it be the packaging?

Your veterinarian should still be consulted before buying cat food, as some pet food manufacturers stay within AAFO guidelines by breaking up the filler products listed on their labels.

Both of my dogs have ate Iams for 11 years. I recently lost my Husxy X to splenic cancer. Although I can't entirely blame Iams, I certainly wonder if it is a contributing factor to my late dogs health. I will be removing my other dog immediately from Iams. This info should have been posted at every grocery and pet food store!!! I just found out and apparently this has been going on for over a year according to hte posts on this website. How awful and shame on Iams producer.

I am sorry about your beloved boxer. I had taken a look at the ingredients list on the food that you have been giving your dog, there are many fillers in the ingredients list and there are ingredients on the list that is poison for pets. An example is Maganous Oxide - it is not a mineral it is used in the textiles industry in building construction. These companies are poisoning our pets. I have done much research and that has been why I have changed my cats food also. However once again the safest food out there is the one that you make yourself for your pets. One just needs to do the research on what your pets can and cannot eat.

Last week, we noticed that our beloved 4 year old boxer would not eat her usual dry food: Iams mini chunks. She began drinking alot of water, was listless, and vomiting up anything we gave her. We took her to the vet and it was determined that she has complete kidney failure. After over $1000 in tests, IV fluids and so on this past week, the veterinarians are still unable to determine what has caused her kidneys to fail in an otherwise healthy, robust dog. We are heartbroken.

I was just made aware of the dangers of Iams, and wondering now if this is what's causing changes in my older cat. She was once robust, playful and healthy, but in the last 3 years (which is about the same time I started her on Iams), she has gotten thin, lets her fur become matted, her breath is foul, and she drinks what I think is a large amount of water on a daily basis. I was chalking this up to old age, but now I am wondering if the Iams cat food has been slowly killing her. :(

I thank you HolyHell in correcting my sentence structure. It was not my intent to annoy anyone. The sole reason for my comments was to educate pet owners. So that they can be better informed when buying their pet's food. As I myself have two cats, I want them to be the healthiest that they can be. They are members of my family and I have grown attached to both of them. Again, thank you.

It was not my intent to annoy anyone. The sole reason why I had given the information that I did was to inform those pet owners that want to lessen their vet. bills, and to keep their pets alive longer. For those that see their pets as a member of their family. I would like to point out that my previous words that were spelled in capitals with quotation marks obviously brought your attention to my comments and bringing attention to the fact that food companies are poisoning our pets for profit is the point that I was trying to get across. So I thank you HolyHell for drawing even more attention to my comments.

One final Note; By product is the 4 D's; Dead, Disabled, Diseased, and Dying parts of animals. Anything listed as Meat could be "ANY" animal or a combination of different animals, again could be "ANY" animal. So do "YOUR" research and at least find a reputable site that is "NOT" selling a product to see what cats and dogs can "REALLY" eat. That is my advice to "YOU" and for the "LOVE OF YOUR PET" with "BETTER KNOWLEDGE" they will live "HAPPIER HEALTHIER LIVES", with "LESS" vet. bills and when you add "LOVE, PATIENCE, and RESPECT" all of these makes for a "MORE HAPPY" member of "YOUR FAMILY". You can also if you wish e-mail companies to see "WHY" they are using these things in your pet's food - with individuals having "MORE" knowledge they may actually "HOLD THEMSELVES" accountable for what they put in their products. When "ALL" is considered companies do "NOT" want to lose customers.

  • Submitted by Tanya at:October 8, 2011 08:54 PM

One extra bit of information cats do "NOT" digest beef or pork properly these meats "SHOULD" be avoided when giving your cats food. Another "WARNING" some pet foods contain; cardboard, saw dust (from cutting wood) with blood on it, properties of windshield washer fluid and the like - try to find a "GRAIN FREE" food with the least amount of additives and if it is a chemical of which some are labelled under minerals - "BUYER BEWARE" - some cause kidney failure. Again your "SAFEST" bet is to "MAKE IT YOURSELF" - and if you do purchase kibble it "DOESN'T HURT" to inspect it yourself.

  • Submitted by Tanya at:October 6, 2011 01:57 PM

I have done "MUCH" research and the "ONLY" really good kibble I could find was made by Champion Pet Foods. Canned food I am finding it "MORE" difficult to find one that stays consistent in colour and scent. Do research on what cats and dogs can and cannot eat then if feasable make the soft food yourself, some recommend raw however with raw there are "MORE" risks. An example is cats can get the Avian Flu by eating raw infected chicken and etc... I will make my cats soft cooked food, "ONLY" off of what cats "CAN" eat. Remember foods like corn, wheat gluten, rice flour and etc... are "NOT" made for cats these ingredients are "ONLY" fillers. Cats are carnivores. Buyer beware - foods with Yucca cause Renal Failure, and there are a series of other ingredients that cause health problems and even death. The safest food is the one you make yourself however you "MUST KNOW" what cats can and cannot eat. Remember even if you buy the organic, antibiotic free lamb, rabbit, and turkey - remember a small amount of cooked veggies(safe list "ONLY"), can be added to the food - to make up more vitamins. If once you do the research you want to mix it with a "MORE" safe canned food (a bit of the canned food), that is your option it will lessen the negative effects of some of the ingredients in the canned and increase the vitamin content for what you are lacking in your made food. Also due to "MOST" foods having chicken and fish some cats get allergies from these foods. Tuna is "NOT" a good idea because of the Mercury content, and Salmon currently farmed fish may be safer -due to the Japan crisis.(Once you do this you will have to monitor your pets urine, fecal matter, behaviour, and etc... to determine how your pet is "REALLY" doing. Once you find what works you should have a "MORE" happier and healthy pet as long as you are giving them the love that they "NEED".

I am just sick at reading this and all the comments. I've fed my dogs and cats IAMS for years. Last August we lost our first cat, GABE to complications with Chronic Cystitis. 6 months later Butter died of Kidney failure. My big lug, Rufus, is now in kidney failure. He has been an IAMs eather since I brought him home as a puppy. Last summer we had all kinds of leakage issues between the cats and dog. After both cats died the dog was having episodes of peeing and pooping in the house and vomiting almost daily. I never made the connection to his food until about a month ago when he became more and more resistant to eating anything from IAMS: Proactive formulas, we've tried them all.

In the spring of 2007 I adopted an 8-year old terrior/mix. Due to beef and pork allergies I purchased all his IAMS food through my VETS office. Last August (2010) I found out that I was poisoning my poor pup with the very food that was suppose to be good for him. YES, my bag was contaminated and all IAMS said was that they did a recall and sent me a $50.00 check for the bag of food. Bastards- - -my dog almost died and they could care less. Thankfully he is strong willed and still with me, but I have spent THOUSANDS (to date over $6,000.)dollars in vet bills over this past year. I am more than willing to add my name to a class action suit. I have kept the bag with the number on it and some food left inside.

Does anybody know about a problem with the Iams Weight Control dog biscuits? I've fed them to my Labs for a couple of years with no problem. All of a sudden, both of them have had gastric problems, and one was VERY sick. (Three trips to the vet in one week.) Through trial and error and a process of elimination, I'm seriously beginning to think the dog treats are to blame. I was just going to throw the biscuits out, but then realized that, if there is indeed a problem, other people would have experienced it as well, and the company should be notified and held accountable. I do NOT use Iams dog food as it gave both of them diarrhea when they were puppies, but, like I said, there's been no problem to date with the biscuits, and my fussy eater likes them. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

My 4 year old male cat, Stinker, has had struvite crystals since December. I put him on the vet recommended diet, but since I have 4 other cats to feed, Stinker ended up getting too much of the other cat food and had to go back to the vet. I gave them all the prescription after that, but he did not get an antibiotic shot. Back to the vet and I did switch to Iams because it was cheaper and the vet did say a better quality over the counter food may help, though he cautioned against it for Stinker. I also began feeding them a can of Iams mixed with water. Stinker had his checkup yesterday, 2 weeks after our last trip to the vet, and today the vet called to tell me he is loaded with crystals! I have also noticed one of the others is going on the side of the litterbox, resulting in a mess outside the box. As soon as I can narrow down who did it, it will be yet another trip to the vet. These tests are costly, not to mention the fact my Stinker is in pain and miserable. I have not noticed any behavior changes in the others, but we have switched back to the prescription that is not an Iams product. I wonder if it is Iams that is the problem, or if Stinkers little body can only handle the vet formula.

A month ago i lost my 13 year old Boston Terrier to kidney failure. She was drinking a lot of water and having accidents in the house, then she began to vomit. From the time she was diagnosed to the time she died was three weeks. Just yesterday, my other Boston Terrier who is twelve and has had no medical issues was just diagnosed with kidney failure. I felt that he was drinking a lot of water and the urinated in the house. I immediately made an appointment with our vet. He is now on KD diet food, and a supplement in a pill form. We could not believe that within one month both of our Bostons would have kidney failure. They are from two different states and are a year apart. I had always had open feeding for our dogs and they would eat when they wanted. They also got some left overs from our dinner. Recently our Male, Ben did not want to eat his IAMS mini chunks. I thought he was depressed fr5om the loss of Sammy. Since I did not want him to go hungery,I mixed the dry food with water and warmed it up. He did eat it. We could not figure out how within a month both of our dogs could have kidney failure. I just jumped on this website today and found out about the recalls. I feel responsible for giving my dogs, that are our children, this food and causing them so much pain and suffering. I have gone over this again and again looking for the common factor with our two dogs and what could have caused this to happen and so far this is the only common factor. We were told that Ben could have one to six months to live. We are heartbroken. We also know what he will be going through because we just went through it with Sammy. My heart is broken.

We purchased IAMs mini chunks in the green bag on Tuesday, May 24 2011. On Wednesday we noticed our Australian Shepherd was acting uncomfortable and wouldn’t lay down and rest. Thursday he was still acting uneasy and was having bowel movements every time we let him outside. When we came home from work on Friday we found him lethargic and barely responsive, he had been vomiting and had diarrhea all day. Took him to the emergency vet on Saturday, they gave him antibiotics, meds for nausea and an IV of fluids to hydrate him. He currently is on two medications, will not eat and can barely walk, we still aren’t sure if he will make it we are taking it day by day. We did not know about the recall until we started doing research to find out what could be making our dog sick so fast, the food should be taken off the shelf if it is making dogs so sick.

I began noticing my dogs recent issues with diarrhea and lethargic behavior after opening a brand new bag of Iams minichunks (green bag expiration date not listed in recall but I'm not taking any chances) I decided to hit the internet for some answers and boy am I glad I did before it was too late. It's a shame companies like this are allowed to operate. Always about the $$$. OUR DOGS ARE WORTH TOO MUCH TO US TO BE FEEDING THEM THIS POISON!

We had been feeding our two large breed dogs Iams LB food for many years. This past winter we noticed neither of the dogs would eat their food, and had lost weight. The older dog was lethargic and seemed depressed. The younger dog was rack thin. We switched foods to another brand and it was amazing, they started eating, gained the weight back, their coats got glossy, and their moods improved. I hadn't heard there was a recall, but I am not surprised, as there was definitely something wrong.

I feel heartsick.I fed both my Ragdoll cats IAMs wet food. My little girl Bella was dripping blood out of her bottom within a week or so.Soon after,Moby started to have blood in his stool. I came home one day to find Moby on the bed,not able to move. Took him to the vet and he was running a very high fever. I used to feed them IAMS wet cat food..which was recalled..every night. When it was recalled and they went to other food, the blood has cleared, the illnesses have cleared, they are totally different cats. I agree with others...why is there no class action against IAMS? I would say to people, don't worry about whether it is recalled! Stop feeding your beloved pets this poisonous product. If only I'd suspected the food a long time ago,my little ones would not have gone through this grief. I only desperately hope I haven't harmed them long term. I would never put this food near them again.

I went to buy dog food today at the pet store and decided to ask the retail associate if she knew of any problems with Iams dog food. That's when she alerted me to the recalls. The vets could not find what had happened when she first went blind very suddenly and she adjusted well to blindness for a month and then died. I will never feed my cats any food made by Eukanuba. I can not prove it was the food but she was completely healthy until November of 2010.

#1 Killer in Dogs: Liver failure #1 Killer in Cats: Kidney Failure After 40 years of raising cats, I have never, ever been told by a veterinarian to feed my cats CANNED cat food until today. I post this as a warning to all feline lovers, if you are feeding your cat only dry food you seriously need to properly research canned foods (AAFCO compliant brands) for your pets and make the switch to canned cat food a.s.a.p. Here is my story: My cats had been raised since they were kittens on Science Diet Kitten Dry, then Science Diet Dry Adult, then we switched to Iams Dry Adult and then to Iams Indoor & Weight Control Dry food. Now the second oldest who is only 9 yrs. 4 mos has CRF (Chronic Renal Failure) and the remaining three are perfectly healthy. Although there is not a 100% definitive cause that feeding only dry food to cats causes CRF, I do 100% believe this is the culprit. I believe without a doubt Chaz's genetic make up combined with eating only a dry food diet caused his CRF and my vet(s) believe this as well. My vets are all grads of Texas A & M so I know these vets know what they are talking about. Dry foods can be cheap, you think they have a long shelf life, and they are less messy to deal with daily. You can fill the bowl and they are fed for 2-3 days if so needed. So, are you like me? Are you feeding them dry food because of what YOU wanted? (Remember, I thought I was feeding them the "best" out there only to find out it should have been wet food, not dry food) Cats are natural carnivores. Do the research and choose a wet food for your cat. You may have to try a few brands before you find one they like, but you need to make the switch now. My vets even said the canned foods you by in a grocery store were better than serving no canned food at all. It all has to do with the right amount protein, carbs, minerals and MOISTURE content to meet their dietary needs. If your cat is diagnosed with CRF it is most often found after they have lost 75% of their kidney function. CRF is irreversible and even a simple step of switching from dry to canned food can help prevent it. ALL PET OWNERS: I hope this post motivates pet owners to take their pet in for a check up (especially if you haven't been in awhile) and see where your pets diagnostic numbers stand. Have a frank talk with your vet about dry versus canned foods. Educate your yourself from the internet and then ask your vet 20+ questions--if he can't answer them it is time for a new vet! Educate yourself on the signs and symptoms of feline kidney health. And, if you are a dog owner, know the signs of liver failure. Canned Food = Good choice Dry Food = Very bad choice Be the best advocate you can be for your pet--they deserve it!

I have a 2 year old Himalayan who was eating Eukanuba since I purchased him. Last year he started having very loose stools..some with blood. I was in the process of moving and had thought it was stress. After we were settled in the new home, he started defecating outside of his litter box. I then found out about the recall and have switched food brands several times. No matter what I try, he continues to go outside of his litter box. I've spent a countless amount of dollars and time taking him to the vet-to be told it's "behavioral", but I believe it is not only the Eukanuba that started it, I think there are issues with most of the pet foods out there. If anyone has any suggestions other than what are the typical ones I've already tried countless times, please email me at incagirl2010@gmail.com. He is the most loving and beautiful cat but I am being forced to consider getting rid of him b/c he won't stop this behavior. He also goes thru spurts of loose stools still. Any suggestions on good food? Thanks much!

Our cat -- who is a hardy stray cat who showed up on our doorstep and adopted, who used to eat chipmunks and squirrels -- started vomiting three weeks ago. We have fed him Iams (orange bag) cat food for a year now, but we noticed with this last bag that an amount that used to take him some time to work through (due to the typical density of the food) he was now finishing quickly. Looking at the food, it looked different than I remember the food looking before -- lighter and less dense. It was after eating from this bag that he started vomiting. Took him to the vet and had an examination, x-rays, temperature etc taken -- no cause could be determined. ($500 spent) We were given anti-nausea medication and changed his diet. He threw up once more, two days later (perhaps it takes a few days to get over poisoning?), but since then -- having moved to different food -- he hasn't thrown up once. After reading the comments here, I am seriously pondering whether or not the food is to blame. JennReilly's problems, in particular, almost exactly mirror ours. The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if Iams either 1) just re-boiled and re-worked the recalled food and sent it back out (to save money, also explaining why the food seems less dense and weird), or 2) still has salmonella problems at their plants. It makes no difference -- I won't be serving my cat Iams again. Something not good is going on.

switch to a high quqlity, grain free food. SO much better then Iams or the other crap you get in the grocery store. I convinced my parents to switch from Iams to a better, non grocery store brand a few months ago, and it sounds like it was good timing. Don't feed your animals food that is found in a grocery store, it's usually not the best, and is like feeding your kids mcdonalds every day. Do the research, you'll be surprised.

We bought, as recently as 1/3/11 a bag of the Iams senior dry dog food (purple bag) and our dog has been sick since. The sales person yesterday at the Pet Smart told me about the recall. In a moment of anger I called the P&G customer comment line and complained and was told this was not part of the recall. I went on to ask her how she could explain the commonality of events effecting my dog, etc. She did refund the money, plus a few dollars more, for the bag of food. If only she would have offered to refund all the new high quality food I had to buy, the lbs of chicken I have boiled, venison I have boiled, lean ground beef, lbs of rice and cans of organic pumpkin, along with the vast vet bills from the last month!!! This is shameful, but I will relish in the overly generous $25 P&G refund! Unbelievable!

We have 2 german shepherds and have been feeding them Iams Lamb and Rice for years. All of a sudded in September, they both started getting sick. The female GS has been seizing uncontrollably, so we have had to put her on eplilepsy medicine. The make has been scratching his fur out. He is completely bare on his belly and legs. We took him to the vet as well and they put him on a steroid and antibiotics. Nothing has helped. The poor dog is losing weight, but is continually starving. We can't feed him enough. We came to the conclusion by reading this site, that their food must be bad. We have since taken them off of Iams and are trying another type. We are hoping to start a raw diet soon. I don't know if their Lamb and Rice food is the issue, but it seems to be the only link between the two dogs. We are very concerned for their health and are unsure of another solution. Has anyone else had any issues with their pets? Loss of hair, seizures, scratching, overly hungry?

We have recently been able to find the Iams Proactive Health on the shelves again and noticed our dog stools soft for a couple of weeks since our purchase. Last Friday he started with diarrhea so I started him on a diet of rice and chicken and he seemed to be getting better. Yesterday we introduced the food back to him and his stool was very yellowish-orange looking and very soft. We have stopped the Iams again and after reading this I will not purchase Iams ever again. He has been on Iams for around 12 years and have never had this problem. I'm sad for all the others that have been sick and not made it and feel very lucky that he is not as bad as some of the stories I have read on this site.

I have been in the pet industry for over 23 years. I have worked at a pet boarding facility, been a vet tech, and am currently a pet stylist. I have always fed my pets IAMS dog food without any problems up until recently. I now am faced with increasing vet bills because both my 12 year old Jack Russell Terrier and my 5 year old German Shepherd, who have been on the same diet (IAMS Pro-Active Chunk) and now both have become ill with profuse vomitting and bloody diarrhea. Because I had never had a problem with IAMS dog food in the 12 years of using their products, I just didn't want to believe it could be true. Well, it is true. Because my JRT became ill first (constant vomitting and diarrhea), she was placed on medications and fed boiled chicken and rice. The problem with her has subsided. My German Shepherd, who was not yet exhibiting signs of illness, was still eating food from the bag of IAMS I had recently purchased. Now, my GS is displaying the same symptoms that my JRT had. The common denominator they shared was the IAMS dog food. I am very disappointed by the comments I have read from IAMS employees who have posted here. I have been a loyal customer of IAMS for many years and to not take action to find the root causes to the problems that many of their customers share is irresponsible and reckless. I do not think IAMS is intentionally poisoning people's pets. However, there is obviously an issue that needs to be addressed. Due to IAMS' lack of concern to find an answer to the problems their customers face, some of which may have caused irreparable harm or even death, I cannot and will not subject my pets to IAMS products ever again. The risk is far too great. A note to IAMS: A pet owner's TRUST should be your bottom-line, not the profits....because with consumer trust...the profits will be there. To those that have lost pets, my condolences.

We just switched back to Iams proactive health hairball control(orange bag)from the regular Iams cat food because it was back on the shelf at the store. Four days later, our cat suddenly died. This was UPC 1901403919 exp date 20 Apr 2012. I came home, she seemed fine and fiften minutes later she was lying on the floor in a puddle of reddish urine. I won't buy Iams again.

I have two cats that have been eating IAMs brand dry foods for their whole life. I switched to IAMS ProActive Health & Weight Management dry food in November 2010. In December 2010 my smaller cat Dexter started throwing up more then the normal hairball. The expiration date on the bag seemed ok, but I went out and purchased another bag just in case. He kept eating the food but then started vomiting 5-6 times a day. He looked very lethargic and became uninterested in his food. I took him in to see the Vet and they did blood work, urine sample, checked his ears and so on. He checked out ok except for a little dehydration. They filled him up with some water and we went home. I tried giving him the dry food again and he didn\'t want anything to do with it. So I started giving both cats water from a tuna can, and boiled chicken pieces. Dexter (the little cat) didn\'t throw up for a few days, but then I started taking away the home cooked chicken and just gave him the dry food. He began throwing up again within 2 days and became extremely ill. I took him in to the vet on Jan 17th 2011 once again for x-rays and then surgery. They found some bumps on the outside of his stomach and his intestines weren\'t moving properly in surgery so they did a biopsy on both. We are waiting for the lab results. The vet also noticed that he had an intense ear infection and a bladder infection. My cat is still there on Jan 19th, 2011 and they are doing what they can to nur se him back to health. While Dexter has been in the hospital I\'ve been feeding Clyde my older and larger cat his dry IAMs food again. On Jan 17th 2011 he threw up a hairball with some food and then last night he threw up again and again. Both with just bile. It\'s because of this that I decided to check the web for any problems with IAMs food. My brand wasn\'t listed but I still called 1-800-525-4267 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 1-800-525-4267 end_of_the_skype_highlighting and talked to Mary Lou about my problem. She basically said that she would pass the information on but the brand in question is not made in the same plant as the brand that was recalled. I explained that the symptoms were the same and she didn\'t really have much to say. I\'m reaching out to you now because if you have and animal that is having these symptoms please make sure to take away the dry food and put them on something else for right now. Then contact your vet and then of course IAMS. State your claim and lets hope that our animals get better. Please do this... the only way they will do any investigation is if there is enough problems with animals to justify such an investigation. I\'m on my way to take Clyde to the vet and to see my sick cat who is already there. I will also be giving my vet the number to call IAMs to see if maybe she can give them more information. Damage Resulting = I have spent over $2,500. on my cats vet bills and he is still there. Which means the bills are not over yet. Now I am dealing with another sick cat and having to take him in. I have missed 3 days of work and probably will have to be out for the rest of the week because of this. Not to mention the days and nights crying over what might be wrong with my normally healthy cats.

I have been feeding my Boxer puppy (he is now 6 months) Iams puppy dry food, Probitotic I believe, since he was 5 weeks old. On and off he has had several bouts of gastrointestinal problems. Most recently diarrhea, blood in stool, vomting foam like stuff. We couldn't figure out what was going on. Lately too he has been snubbing his food or picking out the soft food chunks (Iams canned for pups) and leaving the dry food. After jumping on the internet today since the Vet is opened, I am shocked to learn it is the food I have been giving. I know it is due to all the others stories match mine to a T. I am calling his Vet tomorrow and we are switching him over to Blue Diamond which can be found at Menards. I am also filing a complaint with the FDA and Iams (Proctor & Gamble).

I thaught about changing food and feeding my puppy Iams puppy food but after reading about the recalls and all the comments of problems I know that I will not be using Iams product. I agree 100 percent that Iams need to be put out of bussiness on there pet food. Thanks for all the info on this food and my dogs will stay on pedigree. Paul of Missouri

Is this ONLY for bags expiring 2/28 2012? My dogs have had diarrhea for the last couple of days and now one of them has been throwing up all morning. I found it suspicious that it was right after I opened a new bag of Iams mini chunks so I came online and found this. My bag expires 2/13/2012. I'm going to stop feeding it to them anyway and go back to my Blue Buffalo but I'm concerned about what I need to watch out for. Thanks!

I'll help any way I can. Mine are gone but no other dog should die like this. I'm also going to FDA with this.

Since it appears that one of my comments has been deleted that contained a contact person and phone num to an Iams rep I will repost that info. My orig about my experience was on Nov 3rd. I cpntacted Iams and after taking forever to reach someone I am told that they were not aware that others were having issues with the Iams mini chunk, are they blind??? I was then offered vouchers for their products, I will NEVER touch their products again! I urge anyone and everyone to call Iams and make them listen to your experiences. Dina is the person to contact, her num is 1800-535-8387. My personal email is rice803@yahoo.com. I am outraged that this has happened and all these animals have been made sick or died due to Iams negligience, I am more than willing to do whatever I can to ensure that something changes. It is a horrible feeling to have knowing that I paid my money for what I thought was "quality" dog food and it made my dog suffer and ultimately die... My family continues to mourn him, we will not be the same.

I have 2 4 month old goldendoodles and have been weening them from Eukenuba to Iams and was told by my local petsmart associate that these foods were very comparable and good foods. I have spent thousands in vet bills in the last 8 weeks that I have had these puppies with no answer as to why they have loose stool that turns into projectile diarrhea with occaisional vomitting. They are puppies so they play even when they don't feel good. I have always thought they were just picky eaters, but I think they are trying to tell me something is wrong with the food. I will be switching TODAY! Any GOOD suggestionsk, please let me know.

Just found out today of this recall and appreciate everyone's comments and emphasize with their troubles or losses. Perhaps my Shiba Inu Elvis has been lucky with no obvious GI symptoms of "potential" contamination, a.k.a. poisoning, from the lack of quality control of the Naturally Wild Salmon & Rice he HAS eaten for years...beware P&G, you have lost another customer! Why wasn't this widely publicized in the news... I saw nothing until I called PetSmart today looking for inventory. Eukanuba 's website mentioned nothing about this when I searched for a retailer on "Where To Buy", funny how nothing came up…there should have been a link to warn customers of the recall. Upon digging further I did find a reference to the P&G posting, then this ASPCA blog. Elvis has allergies that have previously been limited to constant licking of his paws to the point of fur loss, pink skin and even surface wounds. This year it has progressed to scratching his muzzle and eyes, again, breaking skin around his eyes and fur loss; now I’m suspicious of the true cause? Just remember, all “accidents” are preventable, given enough concern and investment into safety and quality control. But guess what P&G, that means you have to spend money, do this of your own accord (pay now), or loose a customer (pay later)! Either way you are going to pay for your mistakes! This dog food is very expensive, are you going to pass of this loss to your customers? Not this one!

Salmonella contamination? How about some form of poison, like arsenic! Dog's can feast on dead animals and not get this sick. Salmonella, I don't believe it. Should have been a mandatory recall from the start, but unfortunately $$$ rules. Just like everything else company or Government related, you will never get the truth! Sad but true.

My dog died from this. I talked to the iams customer service today and all the girl would say is that the food is not recalled that they are upgrading their factories and can not make the food until the upgrades are done. She said their was never any salmonella in any of their dog food. Kinda weird that everyones dogs are getting sick and some are dying! Sounds like a cover-up to me.

I went yesterday to get my cat's Science Diet at Rural King (farm supply store) where I always get my large dog's Iams ProActive Health Weight Control Large Breed(blue bag St. Bernard on front) and noticed it was not in stock. There was a sign up saying they were temporarily out of stock on some Iams foods due to manufacturer constraints. I asked an employee if there had been a recall and they said NO. Seems it should be after reading here, but trying to find info is less pleasant than having teeth pulled. My dog has also been coughing/ gagging and spitting up white foam since the last 44lb bag. Vet can find nothing wrong. What have previous users of the Iams ProActive Health/ Weight Control? large Breed switched to???? Thanks so much.

I have three dogs that are the world to me and everyone I know. I have been getting IAM's food for while now and was satisfied with how my lab's stomach handled the food. My yellow lab specifically has stomach problems and can only handle certain foods. I went to my local pet store and continued to by the IAM's that they were selling. They continued to sell their left over food due to the fact they were told it was just a shortage. I think this is terrible and we should have been informed of the recall. My yellow lab spent about a week throwing up and I had no idea what was wrong. After reading this recall I think I just figured out the problem! Something need's to be done about the fact that the company allowed our dog's to continue to eating the contaminated food.

I purchased a bag of IAMS Weight Control on October 29, 2010, for my 9 year old lab. Within 4-5 days, she became violently ill - - vomiting, diarrhea, lethargic - - and was consuming massive amounts of water (4-5 X her normal intake) and as a result was having accidents in the house. I thought she had a urinary tract infection so took a urine sample to the vet. Her urinalysis report indicated glucose in her urine, but no infection so the vet thought she might be diabetic. We went back two days later for blood work and her liver and kidney enzymes were dangerously high. She would still not eat and was getting very, very sick. The vet gave her anti-nausea and diarrhea meds and we switched her food to Science Diet KD canned food. She started eating small amounts and was able to hold it down. Slowly, she improved. This is day 12 since she first started getting sick. We went back to the vet today for re-tests. She sill has glucose in her urine, but not as much. The blood test results will be back tomorrow. She is still drinking more water than she did before she got sick, but not as much as she was initially. She has suffered injury to her liver and kidneys and we just hope and pray that it will not be permanent. I have been in touch with IAMS and so has my vet. We are sending the food in for testing. Please pay attention to any changes in your dog's normal eating pattern or their behavior. It has been so sad to see her suffer like this and I don't want any other dog to have this happen to them.

She stops eating, and deosnt even bother getting up to go outside. And now its going on with my other 2 cats! What the hell is going!! If the P&G don't do somthing now, then I will. My good friend got a new puppy a few months ago and I told her how great IAMS dog food has been to my girls. Now I have 3 dogs jeapordized because the signs at our local store just state that there is a limited selection due to "manufactures constraints"!!! This is outrageous! I will NEVER again purchase food from IAMS. Had there been honesty involved from the beginning, they possibly could have saved some customers. I opened a new bag of Iams mini chunks, green bag (my dogs normal food) the other day. She turned her nose up at it and sort of picked at it (she usually eats so fast she forgets to breath). She continued to refuse for two days. She had some table scraps but wouldn't touch Iams. She threw up this morning and has been less active. I went out and bought a different dog food and she ate it immediately this evening. She is a mutt with a strong stomach, but I still want to know what was in her food and why it is still on the shelf if it is making dogs sick.

I have always fed my dog Iams minichunks. She is a 10 year old Lab/dalmation mix. I just bought her a new bag of the dog food last week and I haven't had a problem out of her. She is very picky when it comes to food and her stomach doesn't like other foods. She does fart really bad and always has a grumble sound in her belly. I remember a few years ago when she had diahrea and blood in it one time that lasted for a couple days. I thought she had a stomach bug. I continued to feed her the food and she was fine. I have always chosen Iams for her because its suppose to be such a great dog food and it has been but all the reading I have done makes me wonder. She hasn't been acting up with this food at all. Though it seems the food isn't bothering her right now, I'm still worried about buying a new bag when this one runs out. I don't want her getting sick and not sure if I should take the chance... ????

I have a 7 year old English Bulldog that has been on the Iams Lamb and Rice for several years. She recently began showing many of the symptoms that have been mentioned; she's very lathargic, she began throwing up and she has broken out in what appears to be hives. I've been having difficulties in buying Iams the last couple of months. All I can find are the smaller bags. The signs posted in the stores indicated that the shortage was due to a distribution problem. I will never buy Iams again and I am apalled at the deceptive manner in which the company is handling this.

I was afraid of something like this ... I have fed my pets Eukanuba for many, many years. I was a breeder of Rottweilers for 12 + years and I had the healthiest, happiest animals possible. I just lost my 19 yr. old cat a year and a half ago due to a blood clot that went to his groin area and paralized him from the middle of his back down ... BUT ... he still had all of his teeth, his hearing was normal and his eyes were in perfect health. At 19 yrs of age, that is amazing. My vet had done a geriatric blood screening on him just 6 months before he had to be put down, and he had to run the test twice because he thought there was a mistake. He called me a week later and stated that he ran it twice because the test came back as that of a 5 yr old cat! I told him I honestly felt it was due to the food he had eaten his entire life ... Iams & Eukanuba. He agreed. But, I was very concerned when I found out that Iams had sold out to P&G. I knew something like this would happen. I was very upset when I saw the Iams foods in grocery stores and Walmart. Iams and Eukanuba had only been sold in selected pet stores or Vets before P&G took over. I was afraid the quality of the foods would be compromised. It took awhile, but I guess my fears were brought to light.

Hello, I just want to report I also am having concern's about whether the Iam's dog food I just bought is safe. I have fed my 3 the mini chunks adult for a good while with seemingly no problems but this time decided to get a bag of the lamb and rice formula. I have had it for 3 days, my older two dogs have thrown up a couple times and now my younger sheltie male is not acting good at all. He started throwing up last night and today he threw up this morning and won't even take water for me. I am giving him a little space to see if he will feel better by morning but if not we are heading to the vet pronto! I have taken all 3 off this food until i know 100% it's not the problem and after reading this blog I don't think id return back to it. I will try to update what happens with my sheltie as soon as possible, I will demand a salmonella test if we head to the vet tomorrow. Im so sorry for all other's who have had their fur babies die or get sick. Mine are like my kids and it hurts me whent hey dont feel good.

My Chihuahua was fed Iams Mini Chunk his entire life (8yrs, 1 month), I trusted that I was feeding my dog quality food. My Sylvester started having seizure type episodes the end of August 2010. He was taken to the vet soon after where blood work was done and came back normal. I was asked by the vet to try and get video of these episodes to help her determine what was going on. Meanwhile my dog lost weight, became extremely lethargic, struggles to breathe and has more of these seizure type episodes. After researching these symptoms online I learn of the recall and issues with Iams dog food and am horrified to learn of all the pets that have been harmed and died due to their negligence. I then called my vet to alert her of what I have learned, I change my dogs diet and hope he will recover. Unfortunately Iams had done too damage to my families beloved dog and he passed away on 10-31-2010. My family is completely distraught and we will not be the same without him. It is horrible to know that I paid my money for their "quality" dog food and they killed my dog. I would like to know why they seem to have taken no responsibility for their negligence and all of the animals and families that they have hurt! I too wonder why they have not been sued yet... money will not bring our pets back but a lawsuit can help ensure that this will not continue happening. I am willing to do whatever I possibly can. I can be contacted at rice803@yahoo.com

I have been feeding my dog IAMS for the last 10 years and never had a problem until early July 2010. "Chloe" starting having very loose stools and vomitting. We took her to the Vets who ran about $800 worth of tests and found nothing. We gave her anti-nausea medicine and canned food from the Vet for a week or so until she got a little healthier. We then decided to put her back on her IAMS. She wouldn't eat it so I decided to make it more enticing by adding water from tuna cans or cooked chicken and rice. Unfortunately it worked, she started eating the IAMS again against her better judgement. Within 4 days Chloe was extremely sick again. Another trip to vet for more testing, stomach scope, IV, anti-nausea, and safe food, this time $1800. That trip prompted me to do more research online where I found this BLOG and the solution to the problem. IAMS had a recall for salmanella but the 2 kinds of food I fed her are not on the list? Only VET dry food is on the list. STOP FEEDING YOUR PET IAMS!!! Chloe is a 11 year old Golden that weighed 80 pounds. She now weighs 55 pounds and is emaciated. IAMS brought my dog so close to death it is a challenge everyday to get her to eat or drink. I am so afraid my 7 year old son will lose his lifelong best friend because IAMS continues to sell tainted food. My frustration with this situation mounts everyday as I read more horror stories of people losing there pets to IAMS. Why hasn’t IAMS pulled the food off the shelves? How can we stop others from losing there beloved family members? Why hasn’t anyone filed a lawsuit to stop this? Is Proctor and Gamble that big and scary? Can anyone answer these questions for me?

Iams and Eukanuba was bad food to BEGIN with. Corn, wheat, and by-products...not for my animals, thank you very much! Do some research and get your pets OFF this type of food. If you see corn, wheat, or byproducts in the first 7 ingredients, PUT THE FOOD DOWN AND BUY SOMETHING ELSE.

Just read Dave's comment of Oct. 31, 2010 and I'm wondering where he purchased his Iams Proactive. Our 4 1/2 year old Australian Shepherd/Blue Heeler mix has been eating Iams Proactive Health Lamb & Rice, pink bag, since she was 6 weeks old. She is a powerful overly energetic dog! We just opened up a new bag 5 days ago. She hardly ate any of her first feeding and very little the next day. We though she was just getting finicky about her food at first. Then she started throwing up, eating grass, her ears went to the side instead of up and she's lethargic and unresponsive compared to her usual high strung manner. She refuses to eat anything but a few high protein people foods and hardly any of that for the past 2 days. She was in excellent health before this occurred, all of her shots, etc. are up top date. We appreciate all the info posted on this site. We kept thinking she acted as if she'd been poisoned and we were worried about the new bag of her food, which is not on any re-call list..but apparently should be! Will be calling the NC FDA in the morning to complain about Iams. If you're in Eastern NC...Elizabeth City in particular, beware buying Iams at Walmart, where we purchased our bag!!! You don't want to have to see your dog the way ours is right now since we bought the new bag of Iams! Suddenly this evening she has gotten much worse and we're afraid we're going to lose her.... we're also worried about what overall long term impact this could have on the remainder of her life if she does survive!!! We're off the the vet!

I have been using Iam's Mini-Chunks for years for my Mini-Schnauzer (8 years old) & my Chihuahua. I Just opened a new bag less than a week ago, & I always make sure that there are no rip, tears, or holes & that the bag does not "drip" any food crumbs. Within 2 days on the new bag (with a "Code" of 99471633 next to the UPC) they BOTH started with diarrhea with light blood in it, vomiting, lack of appetite, no playing like "normal" for them. & a lot of rumbling in their stomach area. IAMS has lost a TRUSTED Customer. How Dare they gamble with my fur babies lives ! ! ! !

Our 2 beautiful dogs have eaten Iams for years but this summer they started acting lethargic and were losing weight. We never once thought it was the food since they have been eating it for so long. We were feeding them Mature dog good in the purple bag. Sparky passed away last night and Asti is thin and lethargic but we're hoping she'll snap back by changing her food. We thought it was there age but we were wrong. I only wish I would have investigated sooner.

To all of you out there.Your dog knows best. they know when the food is bad....dont make them eat it.October 1, 2010 I am very upset that my vets office didnt call me about the recall. my Corgi is 3 now and has been on Iams Response FP for almost 3 years. He has been getting sick the last 8 months and nobody told me about this recall until today. I called Iams and they told me to go to another dog food. My dog was in the hospital on IV's 2 time already and I thought we were going to loose him, throwing up, sick to his stomach, fever...What does it take for someone from this Company to come forward and inform us before its too late! I went to many places today, walmart, petsmart and our local pet food store and I see the products are still on the shelves that are on the recall...Someone has to do something...our dogs and cats are part of our family...Something has to change!

We too, have been feeding our 3 year old Golden Doodle and our 2 year old Lhasa the Iams ProActive Health Weight Control variety of dry dog food. We purchased it from our local Costco and have feeding them this food for about a year and a half (to the Doodle). About three days ago I opened a new bag and our Doodle ate it for the first day, then stopped altogether and won't touch it. The Lhasa just stopped eating it today. My wife did some internet research and discovered the recall, though this formula is not on the list. We'll be watching our dogs closely to see if they develop any symptoms, but hopefully they stopped eating it in time. I am so upset with Iams right now I can't see straight. God bless all of you who have sick dogs or lost a beloved member of the family because of this. You are in our prayers.

Follow up to 8/24 post. My baby had acute infectious hepatitis and secondary pancreatitis. We don't know what caused it. The vets said she could have picked up something at the dog park. We don't go to the dog park anymore. I don't think it was her food, but her illness made me take a close look at her food. I know she has chicken allergy and I had long ago changed her food to Eukenuba lamb and rice. I had also let her eat ad lib, so I fed her the low fat lamb and rice. She did very well maintaining a healthy weight that way. However, she still always had thickened red ears and scratched at her face and ears. After her close call, whether it was food related, infectious or whatever, I made the decision to change her food. I couldn't find a low fat lamb and rice by a company that wasn't P&G owned so I went with Blue Buffalo lamb and rice. I liked the lineup of ingredients with lamb being first and there was no corn or soy. After about 4 days it was like she had new ears. They were a beautiful pale pink and the swelling was gone. She stopped scratching. Then my vet told me that she would need to be on a low fat food due to the likelyhood that she will always have chronic pancreatitis. There are not many options for a low fat food that doesn't contain chicken. So my vet recommended California Naturals low fat lamb and rice, which I'm not real happy about since it's made by P&G. After several weeks, she still picks at it, her ears don't look quite as good as they did on the Blue, but she needs to be on the low fat. I am hoping Blue makes a low fat lamb and rice in the near future and when they do, I'm switching back.

I figured it was because he's picky because hes spoiled but after reading all these reviews, I'm def switching to another food! Recently he's had some constipation and some lose stools. I heard bad things about Purina's Beneful so I'm thinking of switching to Rachael Ray's dog food, he tried a sample and loved it - can anyone tell me if her food is good or should i try something else?

Proctor and Gamble bought Naturapet, maker of Innova and Evo pet foods, in May 2010. These foods have accounted for nearly three-quarters of my cats' diet for years. Over the last 2 weeks, one of my cats became so ill from vomiting that I nearly had him euthanized. But knowing that P&G had recently acquired these brands, I cut them out his diet. HE IS NOW FINE--NO VOMITING, NO SIGN OF ILLNESS. Moreover, one of my female cats was vomiting after eating Innova dry food. I stopped it, and she is also fine. NOTE THAT P&G ALSO OWNS IAMS AND EUKANEUBA. I will be contacting the FDA tomorrow.

I recently purchased a variety of "treats" as my dog and I started obedience school. Some I had never heard of, but they looked like my dog might find them tasty. Today I checked all the bags and found the following: A bag of Vitalife - chicken and banana recipe. The bag says Product of China Prepared for Northdown Industries, Inc., 703 Evans Avenue, Suite 600, Toronto, Ontario, M9C 5E9 1-877-646-8621 It also says "Treated By Irradiation". I had two bags that said "Made in Canada" and several that said "Made for------" but not where they were made. This paragraph refers to a number of different brands. Does anyone know how to read bar codes to see where products were made? I looked at Wiki, but it was terrribly confusing. Also, who knows about irradiating dog food? I have heard of that process being used on blood which is self-donated for surgery, but on dog food. Thanks.

I only still have my beloved dog because when he started getting so sick I researched "bloody diarrhea" on the internet. I was shocked when Iams came up. Our 9 year old golden retriever was eating the IAMS Proactive Weight Control (blue bag). We were feeding him twice a day and about a month and a half ago he stopped eating it in the morning. We thought he was just depressed because there was a new dog in the house. He then stopped eating it altogether. He would eat food from the table, but had no interest in his food. Still not putting two and two together we kept trying to make him eat his food, which he woud nibble at, but then walk away from it. He then started getting really sick... vomitting, diarrhea, lethargic. We took him to the vet and they said they could feel that his spleen was enlarged, had a fever and his white cell cound was really high. They assumed that he had a tumor on his spleen since that's what goldens are known for. They said that we could do an xray or put him on an antibiotic and antiinflammatory and just monitor him. We opted for the meds and within a couple of days he was back to himself. The vet called to see how he was doing and we told him he was doing really well. The vet said that it's probably because his tumor stopped bleeding. We started feeding him the food again. He started to eat it and then within a few days refused to eat it. He started going going down hill again. Vomiting, diarrhae, lethargic, trouble breathing and blood in his urine. He was so sick that we had to have him put down on Sunday. We started feeding our younger dog the same food about a week ago. She was eating it without a problem, but noticed yesterday that she would not go near the food (and she eats anything). She also started w/ vomitting and diarrhea and lethargic. We stopped giving her the food and she seems fine now. My sister's dog is also on the same food and hasn't been himself and is also refusing to eat it. We spoke with a rep from IAMS and they said that this particular variety is not on the recall list. I really believe the food is what made my dogs sick and am wondering if anyone else has used this particular type and had problems with it.

I adopted my sweet five year old doxie at the end of July. I have been feeding her "Proactive Health -Small and Toy" pink label Iams. I have had a problem recently finding this and called Iams and was told it would probably be available by January. I decided to check the net and found out about the recalls. I do not know much about her past history, but she drools and pants excessively. Do these sound like symptoms any of your pets have experienced? Yesterday I found what I think what may be the last bag (7 pound) in town. Now I am concerned if I should use it. I don't want to make her sick. Help, anyone?

I took my time to read all of the comments posted here. Thank you everyone for sharing your stories. My 6 month old puppy has been having severe diarrhea, vomiting and mucus in her stool for the past month and a half, 2 days after I opened a bag of Eukanuba Lamb and Rice Puppy formula on September 2nd. The only time she was back to normal is when I fed her rice and chicken. The visit to the Vet was useless and the fecal float test came back negative. I’m now absolutely sure it was the food that made my puppy sick! There were no recall notices posted at our local Petco store when I was buying the dog food on 09/02/2010. Although the Lamb and Rice formula is not on the recall list, I’d had never bought Eukanuba brand if I had known about the recall. Not even mention that it made my dog sick. I hope these posts attract media’s attention!

Yes, Elizabeth, the panting could be because your dog is having some pain or discomfort. My dog was panting excessively too. But, it was his terrible bloody diarrhea which brought me to the internet (and vet!!) and I discovered it was the IAMS! Switch the food!!!!! As soon as I started feeding my dog something else (we bought Natural Balance), he was back to himself and no more panting. He was panting because he was in pain!

From all the identical stories to mine that I am reading about NOW, there is NO DOUBT that the Iams mini chunks should be on their recall list. It is not. That food almost killed my healthy dog. You people are a bunch of nutjobs. Food poisoning HAPPENS in all kinds of food for all species. It isn't intentional. I agree there should be better notification for affected labels but remember that diarrhea is episodically very common in dogs, cats and people and assuming it's the food that isn't even on the affected list (Iams Minichunks) or even on the recalled list (that food is potentially contaminated but no bag tested has yet been positive) is really jumping the proverbial gun. Also, if your vet bill is $400 for two canine emergency visits, you got off LIGHT and shouldn't be whining. Stuff happens and if you can't pay a vet bill now and then, you shouldn't have pets. If a bad batch of food makes you swear off the brand for life, you'd have no food left to choose from.

I have a 15, 7, and (2) 3 year old American Eskimos. Around the time of the Eukanuba recall, one of our 3-year olds started having respiratory difficulty. We now believe it was an allergic reaction to their food. Following one significant attack she became lethargic, exhausted and the pressure from her gasping for air caused the blood vessels in her eyes to rupture turning the whites of her eyes bright red. My son, a paramedic who was present during the attack, stated it appeared similar to an asthmatic attack. Within a few days, while still running tests and giving her a cocktail of drugs, our 7 and 15-year-old dogs began experiencing mild to severe coughing/gagging attacks; a few more days, our 3-year old began to display the same. We racked our brains trying to figure out the cause, while we racked up vet bills of more than $400. We had introduced Eukanuba Naturally Wild Venison formula into their diet—one of the varieties included in the 2010 recall—along with dry Senior Maintenance that we had been feeding. Before we learned of the recall, we stopped feeding them the food, thinking that the problems were associated with something in the food. Within a day, “vwah-LAH,” the attacks slowed…a week later the attacks ceased altogether. I have been in contact with P & G, who opened a claim; in the end, they have avoided commenting about the specifics in our case only that it had nothing to do with salmonella poisoning. Only after demanding a refund on the non-recalled food we threw out in an email from Danette, Eukanuba Breed Expert, on 9/30/10, she stated, “There have been no reported cases with this issue.” There is a significant problem with EUKANUBA dog and it is not limited to only recalled products.

Our dog was sick from eating the Eukanuba Naturally Wild Turkey. Both the pet food dealer and we called Eukanuba - who said to take the dog to the vet - that they would pay for the costs. Now they are backing out - lying. They are saying there was no salmonella contamination now - then why did they tell us to take the dog to the vet and throw away the food? They have no integrity. They were nasty on the phone. We will never buy Eukanuba/Iams again. They are evil.

This is NOT a recall of Iams/Eukenuba OVER-THE=COUNTER foods. It is ONLY for their "VET DIET" foods. The phone number for a recorded informational message from the IAMS company is 1-800-340-8823. Disappointing that the IAMS website given as a link by ASPCA is useless.

Still wanted to post since issues are still happening to dogs who eat Eukanuba dry dog food not on recall list. I, too, just spent 750 btwn ER and several vet visits in last week for hearty 2 1/2 year old dog who typically is a TANK. Vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, lethargy, fever and stomach pain. Only at VET was I told about the Iams/Eukanuba recall. Large Breed Dry isn't on recall list, but I'm going to complain to FDA tomorrow. Paying good money to get our pets so sick doesn't seem right AT ALL. These stories break my heart, but we have to complain to the right channels. Please everyone, contact the FDA. I really think there has to be more publicity on this matter before more beloved animals are affected. Stand up!

Both my dogs have been sick with no clues to why untilI went to buy a bag of food today & was told by the the store clerk the food was recalled. Shame on Iams & shame on Petsmart & petco for not notfiying their customers who are enrolled in their perks programs & actually have a way to tell who's bought the recalled food & do NOTHING to notify us seeing they have every means to do so if your registered into one of their programs. Back in August both of our dogs had to be taken to the vet for uncontrollable vomiting & severe diarrhea.....VERY scary to just be finding out this & know I've been feeding my dogs harmful food for the past few months. Legal action needs to be taken!

I filed a complaint here: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/iams.html What seems odd is that the last posting about Iams is from June. ??? Also, I urge everyone to file a complaint with the FDA. I am so angry that the Iams proactive mini chunks (green bag),which almost killed my beloved dog, is NOT even on the recall list!

Friday, 10/1/2010, my son went to Petsmart in South Jersey to purchase Iams Healthy Naturals (green bag). Told it was recalled, but Petsmart could not tell why it was recalled!!! Very disappointed with Iams & Petsmart, can't find any recall info on their webpage! Yet, they are still selling it. http://www.iams.com/en-us/dog-food/pages/healthynaturalsDog.aspx A month ago, we changed to a natural dog food for our 12 year old and kept the 2 other dogs on Iams. She had been very lethargic. I thought it was her age. Now she's bouncing around like a puppy, her usual self. Planning to call Petsmart this morning to speak to a manager.

I am very upset that my vets office didnt call me about the recall. my Corgi is 3 now and has been on Iams Response FP for almost 3 years.

A few weeks ago we purchased a new bag of Iams mini chunks dry dog food (in the green bag). Late last week I noticed that my dog was having loose bowls. I didn't attribute it to anything serious and fed him some pumpkin, which is a common remedy. I felt something was just not right with him, and I watched him for a few more days. He started panting for no reason and then his diarrhea became very bloody. I was horrified!! We immediately contacted the vet and took in a stool sample. The vet found no parasites, but said that the amount of mucous/slime in the stool was a result of an inflamed colon which most likely indicates a food problem. At the same time, I started doing internet research and saw recent identical stories to mine after dogs had eaten the same Iams dog food!! I'm also reading that some dogs have died! Also, one owner put their dog down, before they knew it was the Iams, because they couldn't bare to see their dog suffering. I only want to get the word out there that there is something very WRONG with this food so that other dogs/owners don't have to go through this. We went through stress and grief of witnessing our dog suffering. Our dog was very sick and we feared for his life. We hope he is 100% OK now, but we will never know if there is permanent damage which may have shortened his life. We also have a vet bill. This Iams proactive mini chunks is not even on a recall list!!

Check the IAMS site for specifics on this issue. I have fed my dogs and cats IAMS products (dry foods that is) for years; and they have all lived healthy long lives. Dogs have amazing organism managing enzymes in their mouths, so their mouths are considered "clean" - even my poop eating lab/collie mix. My big dog routinely/daily eats all sorts of gross fecal matter and never seems to get sick?!

I'm shocked at some of the comments here. People are acting like Iams and Procter and Gamble are intentially doing this to our animals... All these comments about "the government should do something", "Shame on Iams", "class action lawsuit" etc. etc. Seriously, they have voluntarily recalled all of their products just to be safe. Crap happens, why would people think it's intentional? Don't you think the P&G does their best to make a good product so more people will buy it so they can make more money? Come on... And no, I don't work for P&G or any other pet related company for that matter. I'm not even in the business of selling products where I could even relate to this issue.

My 8 year old male mix dog has been eating Iams minichunk in green bag for his whole entire life. He usually inhales his food, but 10 days ago, when we opened a new 50lb bag, he turned away. We were so worried since this is a dog who NEVER turn down food! For the next 3 days, he would not eat during the day, nibble a few kibbles at night before bed time, veryyyyyyyy slowly. With so little food, he was not as energetic as before. We took him to the vet, vet told us to take him off Iams since there have been too many problems. Minichunk is not on the recall, but I see a lot of dogs are having the same issue. We returned the big bag of Iams (thank you, petsmart), and got Hills Science on my vet's recommendation. My dog immediately started devouring the new food. The poor guy must've been starving! No more Iams for me!

Our dogs who are eating a mixture of several different foods including Iams, have been having diaherra, terrible gas, and rumbling stomachs for over a week. Finally I have switched them to another assortment, which I have not yet accessed. Mostly for the last month I have had to combine wet food with the dry to get them to eat. One dog has been having incontinance along with diaherra. The dogs have all been eating much less

My dog a shih-tzu mix has been on Iams since she was a puppy and now she is 4. Last Tuesday she woke up panting and shacking. I rushed her to the Vet. They did a complete blood work up a urinalysis stool samples xrays. Nothing came back to say what is going on. She was prescribed Novox tramadol and a antibiotic. Over the coarse of the next 5 days being Sunday she was almost like she had not been Ill she even ate the Iams green bag kibble, first time since this mystery illness started. Monday morning all symptoms are back. called the Vet and asked for her feces to be tested for salmonella even though my dog has not been vomiting her stools are not right there is mucus in them. I need a piece of mind with this Iams issue and my dog to get better we are now trying to offering her food the vet sold us from Hill. She has not ate the Iams that is listed on the recal but something is not right hearing all these stories and my dog being so ill I hope and pray if there is something wrong with the Iams food that P&G speaks up and alerts the public

This just sickens me reading all of these posts. Thank you all for taking your time to comment about these Iams product. I thought I was the only one. I called Iams twice this summer complaining that my labradors, who love meal time, were turning their noses up at the food. Both times asking if they changed the formula. They told me that they added glucosimine to it to help with joints. Sounds great, right? They send you coupons for taking the time to talk to them, which keeps you buying it, but I am getting wind that that is a mistake. I switched to a different food, but I still havn't found one they are wild about. Any suggestions, the soft stool is so bad for my chocolate lab.

I can't belive that iams had done that to these poor animals, i have been feeding it to my 4 year old Cocker Spaniel, Poodle Mix, for two years. Last year I had switched over to Nurto Ultra dog food. I guess we stopped feeding him at just the right time. I hadn't heard about the recall until a week ago, they should take it off shelves, at all pet stores, until the problem is fixed. and if they can't, then they should tell you before you buy it, to save our four-legged friends.

I am absolutely disgusted at how many stories on here are similiar to mine! I have a 6 month old shepherd that I had fed Iams to since she came home. Everything has been fine until a week ago when I purchased another bag of Smart Puppy(the same as always)for her. The morning after her first feeding I woke up to a poop painted puppy as well as poop flying everywhere from her tail wagging. She was soooo sick! Food was not a thought until I caught my yorkie sneaking a bite out of her bowl(which he has been known to do before and has NEVER EVER made him sick)and what do you know...that evening he was sick as well! So after a $150 Vet visit and a Vet recommendation of discarding the food and choosing a new brand, I try to call the 800 number. I sit on hold for 20 minutes before hanging up! Think their "high call volume" has anything to do with the fact they are selling potentially life threatening food to people to feed to our pets? If this was food we fed our children and it was making THEM sick, the company would be sued!!! Why is it any different for our 4 legged kids? I have facebooked my situation and am urging all others I know to discontinue feeding their dogs ANY Iams product! Maybe I should have saved the feces and mailed it to them as a "thank You" gift! Shame on them!!!

SHAME ON IAMS. I just found out about the Iams recall. I was having trouble finding the kind of dog food I usually buy, so I called Iams and they said they were improving the production line. Yeah, right. What an awful company the lady I talked to didn't even tell me about the recall. I even signed up for Iams emails for up to date information and they didn't even email about the recall. Hello, Iams my dogs are my family. So long Iams your JUNK. If you want consumers to buy your product then you need to get your act together and tell CONSUMERS ABOUT YOUR MISTAKES.

Our Golden Retriever had been eating Iams Pro Active Health Weight Control in the blue bag for most of her 5 years with no problems. In the last several weeks she has turned away from it, though continuing to show interest in people food. Yesterday morning she started to eat the Iams in her bowl, acting famished, but immediately stopped. All these comments I found here about others' experience with Iams sent me out to buy some holistic dog food. Our sweet one is happily eating again. Whether Iams food is poisoned or spoiled, it's not suitable for consumption!

If your dog has any symptoms of any of the above take immediately to the vet and get a fecal exam that they send out! I did not do that and because of that Eukanuba would not pay me $700 I spent on emergency care for my Great Dane. Of course this was before the announcement came out of the recall and I just happen to have kept the bag from the food and it was on the recall list. I will never buy another product from them. How they can get away with I will never know. Yes they looked into it but because the fecal exam was not "sent away" they said it could have been from something else. I had two Danes with the same symptoms and they were the only ones that ate the food and had the same thing happen to them. After many loose stools and very sick dogs they did come out of it but I do blame Iams....

My 4 dogs have had a really tough few weeks. They've been eating Iams Healthy Naturals Lamb and Rice for years. In May/June, all of them came down with diarrhea and vomiting. I checked to make sure no recalls on food then returned the new natural treats I bought them and started cooking a bland diet and everyone recovered within a few days. This 2nd round of sickness was much worse. The most sensitive stomach and immune system dog's gland swelled, became anemic from blood loss in stools and vomit, 1/5 of his body weight lost, and the vet and I thought he had cancer. He was put on high doses of Pred. and I almost put him to sleep when he stopped eating all together...then the other 3 got sick. One a swollen anal gland (glands again) and put on antibiotics for 2 weeks, the other 2 bloody diarrhea and vomit. I realized then, it was their food. I checked again for any recalls (knowing the cat food had been) and stumbled upon a consumer affairs website describing all the same symptoms (including cancer diagnosis) and how Iams says they hadn't received any complaints. I cooked all of them bland diets, cleaned up diarrhea covered crates, floors, and dogs for 2 weeks straight. They have all recovered now. We are now slowly reducing the Pred. on the first sick dog to get him off of it. I've switched to Avoderm Lamb and Rice. I can't believe Iams would leave these foods on the market when so many people are having these issues. Greed, plain and simple!!!

2 of my 4 dogs have been sick with diarrhea. I feed them all Iams in the green bag. Some of the dogs eat rawhides as well. I witheld food from them all for 24 hours. Fed brown rice the following day. Fed rice/Iams mixture next day. Okay so far. Next day back on reg Iams diet. Diarrhea returned. No rawhides, so the Iams is bound to be the problem. I've fed Iams for years, so must be a bad batch? I will not feed Iams any more.

Been feeding my dog Iams for about 6 months now and I bought a green bag- proactive health chucks a week ago and my dog that will typically drool in anticipation while waiting for his food bowl to be filled, only sniffed carefully at the food before walking away. He eventually slowly ate his food later. Since then he has been completely uninterested in his food and only eating when he absoltely needs to. Then a few days ago he started having looser bowel movements and trying to poop more often with no results. Then yesterday he started puking so I googled Iams recall and found this site. No more Iams for my dog! Get the word out, I know I will.

So glad I found this site and thank all for their comments. I have three dogs, I switched to IAMS a few weeks ago. No issues with the first bag of dog food, but we bought a new bag (Green bag, IAMS Proactive Health 1 yr + - Chunks) Number on bag - 130911 13 Sept 01334177 J5US61591. I have had this food for only 4 days, dogs stopped eating it after 2nd day, springer started throwing up last night. These dogs never miss a meal so I knew something was up right away. First thing I suspected was the food and looked to see if there was a recall. This food is not on the recall list. I'm saving the bag and immediately going back to their old dog food. IAMS if you are reading these posts you need to extend your recall and take immediate action!

My 12 yr old dog has been eating the Eukanuba Senior Maintenance dry food for the last 3 years. She started with diarrhea with blood in it two weeks ago. My 1 year old eats the Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy dry food. She was fine until she ate my older dogs food one evening. The next day she started with the bloody diarrhea. It went away until a week later when she got into the older dogs food again. The Eukanuba Senior Maintenance dry food was not on the recall list, but I changed their food to another brand, just in case. They were both completely better in 24 hours. I know it was the food! I don't have the UPC from the dog food bag because we keep our dog foods in airtight containers. But someone needs to let people know that the Eukanuba Senior Maintenance is also tainted.

She was never excited about eating and it would take her over an hour to eat all her kibble sometimes. I purchased a new bag and she immediately became ill. She vomited and had no interest in eating. After 2 days of this, I took her to the Vet who told me to throw out the food and feed her rice and chicken for a week and change her food. I haven't found any recall information regarding the food, but I will not be feeding her Iams after reading the posts on this site. My nine year old English Bulldog had water diarrhea, was lethargic and her stomach sounded like a volcano erupting. She is a wonderful loving dog with a ravenous appetite, however she started being very selective about the kibbles in the Iams Pro Active Health Weight Control blue bag. After a few days she refused to eat it at all. This dog never missed a meal in nine years which made me aware it's the food. I then went online to see if there was a recall but this variety was not recalled. This company is all about profit and is uncaring about pets and the people touching this contaminated food. I am so happy to say she is doing better with every passing day and of course I will never purchase Iams again.

I'm so glad I found all the posts on this website because it made me realize why my dog had stopped eating his food, was vomiting, had diarrhea, and his stomach was making crazy girgly sounds. He also keep wanting to eat grass every time I let him out. I had purchased a bag of the IAMS Large Breed Proactive Health at Costco & he's not been to fond of eating it compared to his kibble from before. I got a different food after I realized it might not be another reason for all of these actions and he gobbled it right up, so I know he's hungry. He seems to be slowly getting back to normal. The IAMS went straight into the garbage. I will never feed him that again!

I had two toy dogs ages 13 and 16 that I was feeding Iams Veterinary Dry Formula Low Residue. In the middle of August the 16 year old started crying not stop, throwing up and having diarrhea and panting constantly. The 13 year old soon became ill trowing up blood and having bloody diarrhea. I took the older dog to the vet and after spending $800.00 they thought nothing was wrong with her but did gave some medicine to the younger dog. Well little more than two weeks later the younger one is starting to get better but I buried my beloved 16 year old yesterday. Had I know about the Iams recall sooner I might have saved her. My heart is broken and I miss her so much. I hope no one else has to go through the pain and grief that we have. I will never trust another dog food company.

My two dogs have been eating Iams exclusively for years now. I buy the regular forumlas over the counter, red bag, green bag, or blue bag. A few weeks back, they stopped eating their food and leaving it in their bowls. They're not hand-fed and they don't get table scraps, so it's not like they were waiting for something better. I'd put their food out and 24 hours later, it'd hardly be touched. I thought maybe it was a bad bag or old food or something, so I tried another bag from another store, and had the same result. I heard of the recall for the Veterinary formulas, but after doing some online research, I see that other people are having problems with the regular formula too. I took the Iams away and gave them Purina One, and they went nuts for it. I can't believe I was slowly poisoning my pups. Never going with Iams again.

We have a 9-year-old lab and a 6-year-old english springer spaniel and have been feeding them IAMS Large Breed Proactive Health in the green bag for at least two years, if not longer, and we typically purchase it at Sam's Club. The lab has vomited occasionally after eating over the last couple of months but we didn't think too much about it because it was so random and was always a one-time occurrence. We opened a new bag of food a day or two ago, and yesterday the lab began vomiting repeatedly and drinking a lot of water. By evening she was still vomiting but it was all water, then the water became slightly blood-tinged and we called the vet. He said give her 2 tablespoons of pepto. After the pepto she quit vomiting but remained very lethargic. This morning she is still lethargic but will drink and go outside to go to the bathroom, but it's apparent she is very weak. Her gums are pink, which is a good sign from what we understand. Then this morning the springer spaniel also began vomiting and had diarrhea, and refused to eat. Now this is a dog who is highly food motivated, and for him to refuse food is very significant! I decided to google IAMS to see if there are any problems being reported with the food and came across this information. We still have the bag and are going to give the information to the vet. We will not be buying any more of it!!

I can NOT believe this! I feed my poor baby this food and he has gotten sicker and sicker. My mom calls me just now and said did you see the IAMS recall? Maybe that's why Spotty is sick. So here I am reading that I am the one responsible for poisoning my baby. Buying expensive dog food "thinking" that I am protecting him and instead I'm killing him. This is horrible! No more of this crap for my baby - NO WAY! I feed him the IAMS in the green bag from the grocery store and I believe it should be taken off the shelves.

I'm sorry that so many of you have had problems with Iams dog food recently. On the other side, our Shar-pei tend to have digestive issues and the Iams prescription INTESTINAL - LOW RESIDUE dry food is the best food we have found for them. Finding a substitute dog food has not been easy and they still are not doing as well as they did on the Iams. We hope that P&G finds a plant where they can produce their prescription formulas again very soon.

I just picked up my first time puppy 'Charlie' three weeks ago. The breeder had charlie on Eukanuba. So of course the first thing I do is go to the store and pick up a bag of Eukanuba. He had his shots on Sat. afternoon and sunday morning he vomits and goes into a siezure! I called the vet and they said it might be an allergic reaction to the brand of shot. Tues. eve. poor Charlie vomits again and 30 mins after the first vomit, he vomits the second time and goes into another siezure. I rushed him to the vet only to find out Eukanuba has been recalled. I almost had a stroke holding the little guy Tues night and to find out Eukanuba is the cause of this only if I were the queen for a day! So unethical not to pull this product from the retailor's shelves!!!!! This is an outrage!

I saw a small article in the newspaper about the recall. I was confused by the Iams brand, known as Vetinary Dry Formula. Maybe "Iam" stupid but I feed my labs the Iam's Pro Plan formula in the green bag, so I figured we were ok. Over the past couple of days, both my labs have become ill, with diarrea and sort of lethargic. It dawned on me to check this sight and sure enough, the dog food I am feeding them is included in the recall, with the "best between" dates an exact match. We immediatly threw the bag away-of course I don't have the receit so any hopes of a refund are dashed. But THIS IS THE LAST IAMS PURCHASE I WILL EVER MAKE!!!Hope that company goes bankrupt and may all their families buy contaminated eggs

Tuesday my lab started with vomiting and diarrhea, later bloody diarrhea. I got her to the vet only to find out about the recall then. Not sure but the vet had said, IAMS had a recall. I didnt blame IAMs till the 2nd dog turned up sick today. Almost 6 hundred dollars later, here I am with 2 sick dogs, thank God, they are getting better. I almost had to put the one down Tuesday and shes still a pup of only 5 years. The vet said she was almost in shocked due to lack of fluids. Im still not done with this. If theres anyway I can be compensated for my bills in all this, Im looking for that. If nothing else, the recall should have been posted in more places, news.. stores.. pull the food off shelves faster, etc. IAMs is the only food they have eaten since they were born. Im still not sure how I will handle this as to , if I continue using this brand or not.

I was slightly disappointed. If not for the fact that I shop at the same store, I would not have known. The merchants are terrific and know the brand that I purchase regularly because we have five dogs. I am a little nervous about this - when Iams recalled their brand a few years ago, we were still using their product and all five dogs had gi symptoms that lasted 4-5 days. We need to be assured of the brands that we feed our pets as we would our "human" counterparts. Iams, concentrate on quality instead of the almighty dollar. So distraught!

I have been feeding my dog, now dogs Eukanuba wild for the past 2years. My older dog has never had any symptoms and my new 5month old puppy was on it for about 2 weeks. I did not know about the recall until I went to the store to buy more food for them. I am very dissapointed in the Iams company, i heard about the mass recall a few years ago and swore to never buy thier product but the wild food was very good quality and ingredients. I have switched back to pro plan (this was my food of choice when my older dog was a puppy). i am not sure if I will go back to the eukanuba wild at this point. My heart goes out to all those who have lost or have had very sick animals due to this bacteria.

My 4 year old schnauzer has been sick off and on for the past several weeks with diarrhea and vomiting. She and our 3 year old pekinese both ate Iams mini chuncks and Eukenuba. I took the schaunzer to the vet because she was so sick. The vet said her intestines were irritated. He gave her a needle for the vomiting and pills for the diarrhea. and pills. The next day my pekinese began with the same symptoms and 24 hours later she was dead, My daughter who was the one who feed the dogs most often also had the same symptoms. since the dog has been on a white rice and chicken diet for the past few days she seems much better except for looking for her buddy and howling when I leave the house. lathargic

I purchased IAMS Large Breed (green bag) at Costco and my dog has been throwing up and diahreah for a week. The vet asked if the symptoms started right after opening a new bag of food and I said yes. They gave us pills and bland canned Science Diet and after a few days the dog is feeling better. I am going to have to suck it up and pay the extra $$ to go back to Natural Balance. Remember the problems a few years ago when dogs were dying due to bad dog food?

Here is an update from my blog below. I just got a call from the Iams Vet line and they took all my information again . Strangley enough it was lost from their system even though they still had my phone #. Seems weird in itself. My vet must have given it to them when he called in. Anyway they are NOT taking any responsibility YET but they took my Iams Proactive Smart Puppy date code and bag code down. FYI- My date code is 25Oct11. We will see where this goes from here. @ Krissy who posted below. My sister in law is a Vetenary Oncologist (animal cancer specialist) and she told me "NOT TO GIVE MY DOGS PEPTO" . I trust her advise over a general vet as she is a specialist. Just remove the contaminated food from your pet. Feed thenm a bland diet of white rice until they no longer throw up or have diahrrea. Benedryl works well for itching & puffy ears if they are having that allergic reaction like both my dogs did. Good Luck Pet owners. Keep calling P&G to report your ill animals.

Large Breed Puppy food Pro-active I have a 16 month old golden retriever. For the past two and half month my dog would vomit or have diahrea or sometimes both once a week. My vet said to take her food and water away, and to give her 1 TBS of pepto every six hours. Usually after the second dosage she would stop vomitting and having diahrea. I would slowing give her a little bit of food every day until she was back to her normal amount again. Once she returned to her normal amount of food she would become sick the following day. I first thought it was the heat because of the hot summer we have been having, then we thought maybe she was eatting grass or sticks, so we began to watch her like a hawk. My husband even thought it was from us letting her drink from the garden hose. We had taken away all dog treats, dental bones, milk bones, nothing besides her food. The last straw was this past Saturday. I wake up to a pile of diahrea by the door, a pile of puke right outside her crate, and yet another little diahrea present inside her crate. She sleeps in her crate, but it is never closed she just enjoys her “house”. Through out the day Maggie was having severe diahrea where it was actually shooting out her rear end like a water hose. Once the second dosage of pepto kicked in she was fine. I called Iams and told them what I had concluded. I also told them that she had just been in for her annual visit and had a clean bill of health no parasites, negitive hearth worm, and is up to date on all shots. They told me that they have no known cases on the Iams Large Breed Puppy food Pro-active. Now they want me to just through hoops for them by having my vet talk to their vets. I told them right off, I’m not trying to get money, they should just know there is a problem with their food so that no smaller puppy would be sick. My dog Maggie has been switched now to pedigree for almost 2 weeks now, and has been doing well. Matter of fact she gobbles down the Pedigree way faster than she ever ate the Iams. I’m wondering if anyone else is experiancing the same thing? Either way I’m not going back to Iams. Just a note I had happen to have the last two bags that she had ate from. Which went along with the time frame of her getting sick. It takes her a little over two months to finish a bag, and we had just opened the new bag 2 weeks ago. The exp date on the bags were both in the time frame as the recalled Iams, but this is a Pro-Active, so it wasn’t recalled. Strange coinsidence don’t you think?

My Story: I have been feeding my Schnauzer Eukanuba Lamb and Rice Formula (which is currently not recalled) since he has been a puppy and he has not had any health issues until recently. We have stuck with this brand and variety based on recommendation from the reputable breeder we purchased our dog from. He has always been a very good eater and usually devours his food shortly after it is set out for him. Within the last month his eating habits have changed. First I noticed that he was leaving food in his dish and returning later to finish his food. This progressed to him only eating a small amount of food, then to not eating any food at all. During this decline in his appetite he became very lethargic, febrile, and had a very tender abdomen. We have not observed any bloody diarrhea or vomiting. After taking him to the veterinarian a CBC only showed increased WBC’s, which was most likely due to either infection or inflammation. We began treating him with an antibiotic to treat a possible infection. Also based on my veterinarians suggestion I began feeding him cooked hamburger and rice until he regains his appetite. He was eating the hamburger and rice very well, but attempts to reintroduce is dog food were unsuccessful. When his dog food was set out he would come up and smell it, then turn the other direction. After this visit I was made aware of the recent recalls of Eukanuba and Iams dry dog and cat foods. This is when I began piecing together possible causes of his current condition. His health issues may or may not be related to his dog food. What leads me to be suspicious of the food is the timing of the onset of his signs and symptoms. I purchased his most recent bag of dog food in the beginning of August, and after beginning to feed him this food his symptoms began shortly thereafter. Due to the fact that the signs and symptoms my dog is experiencing can be the result of a number of diseases and conditions, the situation may just be a coincidence. What I have done from here is obtained a stool sample to be tested to tell if indeed my dog has consumed food contaminated with Salmonella (the cost of this was roughly $60). Without the labs all conclusions are merely speculations. From here we can possibly get some closure, and begin the best treatment for my beloved best friend. Food for Thought: My schnauzer is like a child to me, and the thought of feeding him something that could harm his health deeply worries me. My current dilemma is what I should be feeding my dog. I have received conflicting information from varying sources. My veterinarian suggests sticking with big names such as Science Diet and Iams. They suggest this because these companies do the most testing and even with issues such as those currently occurring, these companies stand behind their products and try to right any wrongs that occur. With this my veterinarian stated that these things do occur even in the world of human food, and the best thing to do is handle the situation as best as possible and prevent further issues. Ironically these products mentioned are the products that my veterinarian caries. On the other hand I am hearing from various other sources that these are the types of foods to stay away from because of how they are prepared, tested, and the ingredients in the foods. I have yet to agree or disagree with either of these suggestions. Previously I made my choice to use Eukanuba based solely based on the suggestion of my trusted breeder. I have now decided that this decision may have been just pure convenience, and I should have done much more research. After all this is my best friend. My Advice to Others Like Myself: Do the research! Whether it be big names, organic, natural, or any other types of diet; get informed! We cannot expect any company who ultimately exists for a monetary profit to be looking out for the best interest of our pets. Best of luck to everyone! I value constructive criticism and any suggestions!

I have a 12 wk old malamute and he would not even look up from his bowl of Iam's Large Breed Puppy food until the last week. Wh opened a new bag (purchased at PetSmart) and he has been sleeping constantly, vomiting and has had diarrhea ever since. He won't even eat more than a bite or two when it's time to eat. I know the food was not recalled but to see so many pet parents with the same problem I am definately not continuing with this brand. Too bad because they seem so trustworthy.

I too bought the (over the counter) Iams Proactive Puppy smart dry dog food and both my ( month old puppies have suffered from Lethargy, loss of appetite, diahrrea, vomting , itchy skin, puffy ears etc... One puppy was sent to the vet and had exploratory surgery done on her intestines and was isolated for 3 days. This vet bill cost us $800. She was sent home and ate white rice for 3 days then recovered so well that she started again eating the Iams food. The next 2 days later all the symptoms came back but now with the itching & ear infections. The next day my other puppy started getting the same symptoms. After reading all the blogs here I see where the problem lies. My husband & step son also became violently sick with vomiting & diahrrea after coming in contact with the puppies & the food. I too am experiencing itching now. I have read that humans can be effected by touching salmonella contaminated foods. I can't confirm yet that is what is wrong with our iams dog food but it is making everyone in our home sick. As of this posting P& G have not recalled the Proactive brand. I did call & report this to P& G. They want my Vet to call their Vet Line 1-877-894-4557. I suggest anyone else the same issues to call too. I will never buy Iams dog food again. They have had recalls each year over the past 5 years. Thanks ASPCA for letting us share this info.

My story starts off with my neighbor telling me to stop feeding my dogs Iams. He was feeding his golden retriever Iams and he started getting sick. His vet told him to stop feeding him the dog food that there was a recall on it. So, I decided to research it on the internet and all the imformation shows only the Iams sold by your vet. So I called the Proctor and Gamble 800 number and their recording says the same thing. No over the counter dog foods have been recalled, they are made at a seperate facility. After this I talked to a co-worker on Saturday and her dog was very sick. Then that samed day my son called me and said our dog has been throwing up all day. And last night my other dog started vomiting. I'm very upset that Proctor and Gamble is trying to keep this quiet and I will never buy their dog food again. My neighbor said he is going to stop feeding his dog dog food and start making his own rice.

my dog has been on and off sick for a week or so, I started researching online about various food, my eight month old Catahoula Leopard dog is currently on dry food because it is apparently safer for pups then going on the raw food diet, however, I don't believe this, especially now. We have been mixing in some iams puppy proactive health into his wellness brand and the poor guy has been puking and having diarrhea on and off (the worst last night). I am appalled about the lack of testing and regulations not only surrounding our pet's food but our own food (in re: to the recent egg recall, mad cow disease, e-coli etc) I will be feeding my dog the raw food diet (he is currently recovering on eggs (organic) and rice) as for me, I am a vegetarian that will no longer be eating dairy that isn't local and responsibly produced. I hope all of your sick pets get well, and I hope we all PUT OUR FOOT DOWN when it comes to what we put in our or their bodies!

My 4-year old Bichon spent two days last week at the Vet Hospital receiving IV fluids and antibiotics. When I brought her in she had been vomitting for two days. She could not even keep down water. The vet did an x-ray to rule out bowel obstruction and ran several blood tests to rule out pancreatitis. etc. After a vet bill of over $700, they said it must have been something she ate. We just started a new bag of IAMS probiotic mini-chunks purchased at Target. After reading all of these similar accounts, I really think that IAMS needs to investigate this food as well and possibly add it to the recall list. Also, I had no idea there was a recall. I Think that it needs to be more widely publicized. I emailed IAMS about this, they said that they issue a news release and it may or may not be picked up by the news shows.

Thanks Dawn for the Info. It seems that I have the same problems with my 5 month old Lab pup as you have had. Opened a new bag of IAMS ProActive Health Smart Puppy for large breeds last Thursday 08/19/2010 purchased the day before at the WalMart in Santa Maria CA. Saturday at noon is when the explosive diarrhea started, along with being lathargic and decreased appitite. I didn't know about the recall until I called the vet this morning as his symptoms seem to be getting worse and not better. Called IAMS and was told that there was no recall on the food we had given him and was given a case number. Same story to a tea. Thought IAMS was a quality brand, based on the fact that the Vet carries it, and it's price. After my research I have learned that there has been a recall for an IAMS product every year for the last five years. I will now boycott this product and Euk. or any other pet food made by Proctor and Gamble for that matter. My vet agrees after seeing the same symptoms in my pup as the blog has listed for the ProActive food line its gotta be the food. My puppy is fasting now and begin his recovery soon I hope.

My baby is in a veterinary hospital right now on iv fluids and iv antibiotics. I feed her eukenuba lamb/rice because she has an allergy to chicken. I bought a new bag on friday morning. Sunday afternoon she started throwing up. Initially it was thought that she had pancreatitis, however further blood work revealed extremely elevated ALP and ALT. An ultrasound didn't reveal any masses. The doctor questioned any exposures or anything she may have eaten. I had given her snacks of carrots, watermelon, peach and plum, like a couple slices of each. She has never had any problems with raw fruit or vegetables. So my thoughts go back to the eukanuba. It seems like salmonela is the big things to worry about but nobddy has really referred to elevated liver values. Are there other bacteriea or chemicals that have made their way into dry kibble that affect the liver? Also, just because a certain food isn't on the current recall list, who's to say it won't be on a recall list a month or two from now??? I'm going to switch to a different food just in case.

As I began reading these posts, I realized oh, my God! My little 3 yr old yorkie is not alone. We have been through a nightmare for the last week and a half. She had the same symptoms that Molly of NC explained about her dog, but also was going blind due to infected eyes. I found this out from the Vet when I took her last Thursday. She also has had weight loss. The Vet started her on steroids and an eye ointment and she seems to be recovering. He is referring her to a Opthomologist Vet because of her vision. Even able to see and playing a little bit. I am so relieved. The Vet didn't mention the recall (he didn't know about it). I found out about the recall by looking on-line. I knew something was not right and that is when I discovered the recall. We recently purchased this bag so she wasn't using it long. Thank God! I have tried to reach Iams/P&G at the number listed on the website, but only received a recording. I have fed my dog Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy for small and toy breeds for 3 yrs without incident until now. She is finally eating boiled chicken and doggie treats from another company. She still is shaking and sleeping alot and very nervous acting. She started to run around a little and play in the last few days like she used to. We have been heartbroken over all that she has gone through. Wasn't sure she would make it. Still a road to recovery. I am done with Iams because from the posts I am reading, they still are not aknowledging that this particular formula was a part of the recall. I am trying to contact them back and hopefully and prayerfully, they will stand by their responsibility to their consumers. Praying for you all.

Hello Kat. thank you for this information. I have found loads of it already hunting around about this recent recall. While I wish I could feed my dog the absolute best, sometimes money is an issue. I am looking into the best food, for the price I can afford, and doing a lot more research this time before purchasing. While I appreciate everything you have had to say here I hope you can understand when I ask that we PLEASE keep these posts on the recall article to owners with current illness related issues probably caused by newly opened bags of Iams/Euk. I am trying to get media attention to this, and so far, all the posts I read here are only helping that. When people search this topic, this page is one of the top results. I am hoping that without them having to scan too far down they can find the posts that others have left with details about what exactly has happened with others' pets on account of this food in the past weeks. I do hope you can understand. Thank you so much though for all the great links. It is going to help me in figuring out where to go from here when my dog is allowed again to have dog food. ALL OF YOU LOOKING FOR INFO BECAUSE YOUR PET RECENTLY BECAME ILL PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO OTHERS' TESTIMONIALS. PLEASE LEAVE A BRIEF COMMENT ON WHAT YOU AND YOUR PET ARE GOING THROUGH.

yes, this is sad and serious and always will be when pet is made like this. aside from health problems and health concerns that are present currently, long term feeding of this and such foods Will be detrimental to pets health, no doubt. Plus, P&G keeps ... what we call pets in cages and in their buildings to "test" the food... so when we feed our loved pets others are suffering, by way of mistreatment... living in cages, cold, sad, neglected, abused with chemical and toxic food... and ultimately death, slow and painful... why?!?!? they need to test FOOD!?!?!? I do not agree with that, testing on animals. and must not be Real foods then, because foods that is not processed like what they do and lots of other companies do, would be more real and would not need to do research on foods that are not filled of "stuff" that is harmful. By the way, not just P&G tests pet food on cats and dogs, I know Purina does it too... probably others... too :( SOrry for your pets that have been affected. Please switch and stay with a Natural true food diet for your pets. Halo, Wellness, Weruva, Pet Promise, Innova evo, Natural Balance... Do your research: great books: The Nature of Animal Healing by Dr Martin Goldstein, Complete Care to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats by Dr Richard Pitcairn and

it is not a good idea to get "pet food" from a big factory/processing plant, just doesn't make sense. There is nothing real about the food that is put before them... lots of chemicals and things they shouldn't have and lacks nutrients. Just looking at the processing plant, seems odd that food is made there... really... substances are broken down into ... kibbles... but what is really in that food that we call pet food. should be human grade, why not? don't they crave and desire real food, can we read the label? the pet food industry is not regulated to not allow harmful chemicals to go into pet food. we must seek out companies that are going forth with pride and care of all pets in peoples lives.

My 4 month old puppy has also developed "explosive" diarrhea in the past 24 hours. The food was not listed in the recall but I had just opened a new bag of food that I purchased late last week. The problem developed not long after she was fed that food. The food was: EUKANUBA PUPPY GROWTH (20 LB.) The UPC Code: 19014 15020 Best Buy Date: 13 OCT 11 To make matters worse, I also seem to be suffering a similar fate. I have Crohn's Disease and have just started a very expensive infusion therapy which decreases my immune system leaving me very susceptible to situations like this. I am off to make some rice. Some for me and some for my poor little pup!

I have 3 dogs and they all got sick after eating iams. My dogs ate Iams probiotic. Eventhough the probiotic isn't part of the ones that being recalled, I'm very certain that the food has been contaminated with something. All my three dogs had bad diarrhea and vommiting. I felt so bad for them because they were active dogs and a week ago they couldn't do anything but just laid on the couch. I took them to the vet and she gave them some antibiotic. I have been feeding my dogs iams for 5 years now, but now it really worries me.

@ thersea; Interesting to hear your dog also suffered similar results. I have more to add to my story. First, I want to say (because another poster mentioned this) that I am aware that the recalled food is ONLY the prescription blends. I too was told (when I phoned Iams) that those blends are made at a specific plant and that only the foods packaged at those plants are effected by the recall. Here is exactlly why I suspect the food of making my dog sick. Again, the food she ate was "Iams smart puppy large breed Prohealth with probiotics" Purchased at a local grocery store. On August 8th we purchased a new bag of her food. This is the only food she has ever eaten. As I stated in my previous comment, she is 7mon old and healthy. Exactly two days after eating the food from the newly opened bag she began with explosive diarrhea. Her kennel at night was covered. Her fur was covered, mainly from trying to escape her kennel because she did not want to be in her own waste. Go figure! Anyhow, for the following 2 days she continued both in the day and at night with the symptom. The thought NEVER crossed my mind that it was the food. Like I said, we have never had an issue until now. Also, I had no knowledge of any recall at this point. During these 2 days I noticed also that her food bowl still had some food by morning from the following day. This is totally unlike her. However, considering her stomach was obviously upset, I just assumed it was that she did not feel like eating. When she woke on the 3rd morning and again, her kennel was covered in stinky unhealthy waste, I phoned the vet. I also was beginning to notice that she was panting more. When she was just lying there, her breathing seemed harder and just not right to me. Overall, I still did not think it was serious. She was not vomiting, and while she obviously did not feel well, she didn't seem so unwell that I believed it was anything serious. As I wrote in my other post, the vet instructed I fast her for a day, and then start by feeding her the boiled beef and rice (very important for anyone doing this that the beef is drained before giving it to the dog). Within 24 hours of eating the beef and rice she had a normal BM. That evening I offered her just a 1/4 of her Iams. Within 5 hours the diarrhea had returned, and with a fiercness. Her kennel was covered with three puddles of it by morning. I phoned the vet again. This is when the vet explained to me about the recall, and I discovered by looking the recall list up online that her food was not included in the recall. I posted my comment here, and I phoned Iams. The woman I first spoke to @ Iams was wonderful. Very professional and genuinely seemed to care what was happening with my pet. Now, when I phoned her I said this almost exactly, "I am calling today because my dog is sick and while I understand her food is not on the recall list I just wantedd to tell you exactly what her symptoms are when they started and that they went away when we stopped the Iams, and returned again when I gave it back to her. I explained that I really had no proof that she was getting sick from the food, just that the facts as I know them seemed to lead me in that direction. I told her I just wanted to bring it to their attention, just in case others begin to call, and symptoms can be compared and perhaps more foods need to be looked into by Iams makers. At this point she asked me why I had not taken her to the vet. I told her I had called the vet and they told me that if there was no vomiting and taking away the food worked before, perhaps we could try that again. The thing is with school about to start in a matter of days and 2 school aged children and one infant (I stay at home with the baby) and as a one income family this week is tight with extra expenses and we just cannot afford a vet visit. This is where I was totally impressed with Iams!! The woman then told me to take the dog to the vet, have her stool tested. She said that Iams is currently paying vet bills when a dog becomes sick after eating thier food. I asked her to clarify, "even if it is not the recalled food?" she assured me "yes" then I asked, "what if the test shows some other problem is causing the symptoms, will they still pay?" she again told me yes!! I was thrilled. She gave my a specific number that my vet was to call, and a case number. I immediately phoned my vet back and set up the appointment. This was Monday. This was the same day of the morning she woke again with diarrhea after again eating from that same bag. At the vet she had her stool tested for any form of parasite, bacterial infection, or food poisoning. All of the tests came back clear, BUT what did show up was that certain bacteria, bacteria that is suppose to be in her guts naturally, were going crazy and growing out of balance. (hopefully I understood this correctly, but this is how I understood what the vete told me.) The next thing the vet told me was that BEYOND A DOUBT something she ATE caused these symptoms. As I have described, she has not eaten ANYTHING but for her Iams food. We have been overly cautious, even locking her up at family meals times, to be sure she only eats her dog food. We have never been ones to give table scraps and prefer to raise a dog that does not beg. Furthermore, she is never let outside without one of us with her. We do not have a fenced yard, and while she never leaves the yard, we still physically mind her when she is out. For this reason I KNOW she did not eat something outside, such as a plant or critter, that made her sick. So, all I can ask any of you reading this now, if it was not the dog food, what else could it have been? There we are on Monday with the results from the vet. I was happy to know she had no worms, and no infection. (I will tell you shortly what happened when the vet called that number to have the bill paid). We took her home, waited several hours, and by evening it was obvious she was starving. That evening I cooked her rice and beef, the very next morning, no diarrhea in her kennel, and she went directly outside and had a completely normal BM. Today is Thursday. She has been eating rice, beef, and veggies (large helpings) since Mon. There has been no more diarrhea, and by Wed. the rapid breathing seemed to pass as well. Also on Wed. she was a total spazz. (as a black lab puppy should be) I honestly did not think she was acting too much like she didn't feel well, but when she snapped back after a week to her usual self it was very obvious that I had underestimated her usual pep and energy. This means that once again, within 24 hours of taking her off the Iams the diarrhea completely stopped. She has not had another bout (in fact completely normal stools) since. Now to tell you, in case you are also told that Iams will foot the bill to have your dog (or cat) tested. My vet called the number and was told by a woman on the line that they would hang up and immediately phone me, that they would appoint the case to one of their vet techs for review, and that then the decision would be made as to whether or not they would pay the bill, or how much of the bill would be paid. This woman also told my vet that THEY DO NOT COVER STOOL SAMPLES FEES. As you can imagine this was incredibly perplexing, since this is specifically what I was told they would cover. This woman did phone me, in a matter of minutes. Let me just say, she was not professional and she was not kind, and I did not get the sense that she cared one bit about me, my dog, or what the other woman I spoke to had told me. She explained that I could pay the vet bill and wait for the vet tech to call with the decision of whether or not they would pay. She said that this would likely take 1-2 weeks. Otherwise, she said that if the vet was willing they could wait to find out what their decision was and they could wait for payment for up to 2 wks. As any of you know, most vets cannot (as with any doctor) wait for payment like this. I paid the bill, and I will wait to see whether or not Iams reimburses me. Here is the thing. I told this woman that I was told specifically that they would pay for the stool testing. I also told her I had no intention of taking my dog to the vet since I successfully, and quickly got her diarrhea under control myself with 24 hours, and that the ONLY reason I took her in is because I was told that Iams is covering the checkups on any pet getting ill after eating their food. I explained to her that I was not calling for refunds on the food or hand outs, or to scream and hollar and accuse. That I infact told the first woman I spoke to that I had no proof my dog was sick from the food. I explained everything, as nice as I could, even though it was obvious she was frustrated and annoyed with me (though I have no idea why.) She then said, "I am sorry you were given this misinformation and the vet tech will call you and let you know if any of the bill will be covered. We are trying to deal with all these calls as fast as we can" AHHHHH HAAAAAA!!! that was the first time anyone admitted to me that their have been other calls of concern. Apparently enough of them to bogdown and backup their techs. Interesting. I told her I still have the bag of food and asked if she would like me to save any of it to send back to them. (I meant for them to test) She immediately cut me off and said, "I can not offer you a refund but I can send you a coupon for that brand of food if you would like to try it again." (UHG) "Ma'am, I do not want a coupon, I just want to help you guys to know that I have reason to believe that your dog food, the unrecalled blend, made my dog sick. My vet will explain his findings when your tech phones. I do not want a coupon, I just want the matter looked into. It would be nice if my bill was paid as I told it would be, but more so, I want the matter looked into. I look forward to speaking to your tech." She then asked me where I purchased the food from, and I told her. To which she replied, "we have no control how retailers store or handle our food. The bag of food may have been stored improperly or something may have spilled on it." At this point it became clear to me this is how they were passing the buck. I have my doubts they will pay the bill. It seems more likely they will blame the grocery store for making my dog sick. So there you have it. I know this is long and probably a boring read, but I thought it was important to explain everything. 1. so you understand exactly why I think the food made her sick.... and 2. just incase any of you call Iams, don't be fooled as I was. I mean, maybe they will come through, maybe they will pay my bill. Honestly, I am not holding my breath. My dog seems much better now. I wish I had the money to test this food myself. I am not sure if it is just that this bag, or a small percentage of bags packaged in this batch, maybe have a recipe flaw. Maybe an inbalance in ingredients, maybe something got in there that shouldn't of. I do know, my dog did not have food poisoning. It was not a food borne bacteria. It was something she ate that made her digestive tract go crazy. Her digestive system was ill effected by whatever it was in a major way. She is a young strong dog, if she had been an older dog, or a dog with exsisting health conditions, I am not so sure she would have bounced back so quickly. PLEASE BE AWARE OF ANY SYMPTOMS YOUR PET HAS AFTER FEEDING IAMS FOOD. STOP THE FOOD IMMEDIATELY.

My story is almost identical to Dawn's posted on 8/17/10. My great pyrnees is a little over 1 year old and I feed her Iam Large Breed Mini Chunks. I just called the vet also and they are telling me the same thing that it is the Veterinary products that are recalled, I called IAMS and got their recording as to what is included in the recall... I also have made a vet appt for my do which unfortunately is tomorrow afternoon... It will be interesting to see what they discover, I will also be interested in hearing about Dawn's conclusion also, as I fed my dog that same puppy food before transitioning her to the adult food.

My vet told me this morning that it is only the veterinary foods hat are part of the recall, and they are produced in a separate facility from the grocery store food. My 12 year old terrier has been eating the Low Residue for a year with no issues.

I feel as though I should add to the information being compiled here.... it is likely others will begin to "google" and search themselves for information. That is how I found this page. I will try to keep my information brief and to the point. My AKC lab has always eaten Iams. She is up to date on all her shots, has flea treatment, and worm treatment. She has always been a happy, healthy, beautiful pup. She is about 7 months old. Last week we purchased a new bag of the "Iams smart puppy for large breed" within 2 days she began with horrible bouts of diarrhea. Each morning her kennel was covered in the waste. Through the day she continued to have episodes. We feed her exactly the amounts and the frequency the bag instructs. I assumed, since there was no vomiting, I know she is treated for parasites, I also know she is up to date on shots, and that other than the diarrhea she seemed to basically be herself (not acting ill), that we could wait it out and see if it passed. However, when she awoke on the third morning with the same horrible diarrhea I made a call to the vet. The vet, like us, seemed stumped knowing that she is a healthy, well cared for dog. She instructed us to fast her for one day, then give her boiled rice and ground beef the next. Then if all was well, offer her her regular food again. The day we fasted her, the diarrhea stopped. The next morning we fed her the rice and beef, that evening she had a perfectly normal BM.... and I will tell you I examined it very closely. In fact, while she did not seem to be acting ill to me it became very clear that she had some increased pep at this point. The next morning we fed her half of her usual serving of Iams. That afternoon the diarrhea returned. She has had at least 5 bouts since. I called the vet back and explained what has happened. I thought perhaps she was eating a plant in the yard.... and then I said, "do you think her food could be making her sick?" to which the vet said, "what do you feed her." I told her (obviously) and she explained the recall and that it is only the prescription blends. She suggested however, since it seems like the food may very well be causing this, to discard the food and bring her in. To be clear I cannot say that it is for certain the food, though I will know later today what might be the cause. I began searching for the list of recalled food, and I have read that the vet blends are made at a completely different plant. I am not sure if there is any way at all these other blends could possible been cross contaminated or not. It all seems very suspicious however, and I intend to call Iams immediately after this post. I hope others find this post useful should their dogs get sick. If your dog is on any form/blend of Iams and is showing signs of sickness please stop feeding them the food, call your vet, and call Iams. EVEN IF THE FOOD IS NOT A PART OF THE RECALL. The more people report and incidents the faster Iams can get the correct information and help us all to help our animal friends.

We just started a new bag of Iams Proactive Health red bag 3 days ago. Two nights ago, our dog spent the entire night throwing up massive amounts!!! She was completely lethargic yesterday, and had no appetite. Now I think I will get different dog food and not use Iams again, although it is all we have used for her for the entire 6 years we have had her. I thought she was going to die, she was so sick!

My 3 year old AKC boxer has been eating Iams intesinal low residue dog food for the past 2 1/2 years. He recently lost his appitite and began vomiting blood. I brought him to the vetinary and they informed me to stop feeding him the Iams, that it was recalled. I have purchased this food from the vetinary for the past couple years and they never notified me. I am very upset that my boxer is very sick. This happened about 10 days ago and he is still not fully recoverd. I wonder if P & G will cover the $535:00 vet bill?

We have used IAMs dry cat food for many years and have trusted the brand. My 7 year old siamese cat was pefectly healthy until reciently. It strangely coinsideds with the last purchace of IAMs multi cat dry food purchase. He has been diagnosed with acute renal failure. My pets are like children to me and this is unacceptable. I want retribution.

I ended up here because of looking on Iams website to see if their food was recalled. I have 3 large dogs, 92, 85 and 72 pounds. I got the Proactive Large Breed green bag earlier this week. Within 2 days, ALL 3 dogs were vomiting and had very runny diarrhea. I was taking them out every hour for the past 3 days. I decided today to stop their Iams food and just give them dog biscuits, and other treats that have not been a problem. All 3 of them are resting tonight and doing just fine. Sorry to the people who think that we are blowing this out of proportion but it just isn't a fluke!!!!! I have been a loyal Iams buyer for both my cats and dogs for the past 20 years. NO more Iams for me!!!!! I don't need another episode like this.

My vet. called to tell me that the Eukanuba Low Residue Sensitive stomach food is also included in this recall and to get rid of the food I had immediately. They gave me a bag of Hills Science Diet ID and I have only give my dog 1/4 cup mixed in with boiled chicken and rice and he now has the SCREAMING runs! No more of this! I am just going back to feeding him the diet of boiled skinless chicken breast, rice, and peas n carrots along with essential oils and vitamins. At least I know I am not poisoning my dog!

I think that they should look even deeper into this recall. We have been loyal Iams customers for years. We had a bag of Pro-Active Weight Control that our dogs wouldn't eat. At first, we were in a hot spell and we assumed that they were not eating because of the heat, but our lab was loosing weight (26lbs total.) He was happy to have treats and was devouring rawhides. We decided to throw away the rest of the bag of food and open a new one. They started eating again, but after a couple of days on that food they both started vomiting. I cleaned up 6 piles of vomit in less than 2 days. We became suspicious of the food, and decided it was time to change brands. They are back to their normal eating habits without incident. We pointed this out to our vet, but she said that at the time there were no Iams recalls.. and then a few weeks later they are having this one. I just wanted to pull attention to it for anyone that might be using the Pro-Active line, especially if you are seeing issues with your dog.

I would try Orijen dog food. It's a little more expensive, but it is also higher quality. Higher quality dog food requires you to feed less of it because it doesn't have all of the fillers, has higher energy, and my dogs love it! I do have to admit, I used to feed Iams; however, my Jack Russell Terrier quit eating her food and I had to switch to something different. I decided to bite the bullet and go with a higher quality food. I would recommend checking out this website as well. This site rates all of the common dog foods and may help you decide for yourself which food to buy that fits your budget! :) http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/

First, let's point out that Iams ProActive Health formulas were not affected by the recall. IVF, Eukanuba Naturally Wild, Eukanuba Pure and Eukanuba Custom Care - Sensitive Skin dry food were the only formulas recalled and this was a voluntary recall to make sure all your pet's are safe and not effected. The dog food that will be pulled off the store shelves is just a precaution. The food is tested on a regular basis so more than likely the effect food didn't even make it to the stores. It's sad to see how many people are blowing this out of proportion.

Why is anyone feeding their dog/cat, dry/moist pet food that contains animal by products, and/or roadkill?! What/where are the animal by products coming from, and are they not spoiled?! Think that this may be the problem?! We research and are cautious about the foods we eat. So, why not do the same for our animals?! Does anyone wonder when Iams is sold at Dollarama?!...

Do not associate your dogs illness with this recall. Iaams is the best food made and the recall was strictly voluntary. There is a terrible virus going around that causes vomiting and bloody diarrhea. It has nothing to do with the food.

I didn't know about the recall until I went to Petco with a friend!!! I took ALL 5 bags of Eukanuba Naturally Wild back to said store and was given a full refund on a gift card. My Service Dog is a Toy Poodle who has always eaten Eukanuba foods. The Wild variety was recommended by his breeder. We've had no problems, but I even tossed the measuring cup the food touched. Now, we're switching over to Blue Buffalo without the benefit of his old food. (J's got a sensitive tummy. Oh, THIS will be fun -- not!) I wish that P&G had bothered going to, oh, CNN, so I would have HEARD about this sooner! I'm livid! if anything were to happen to my Service Dog, my life would go back to the hell it was... I hope someone from P&G reads this and shudders right down to their toes!

Thank you, P&G for showing some responsibility. It has been a long time coming. However, most important, why aren't all pet owners all up to speed on the grain-free RAW DIET? The only diet that is appropriate for true carnivore dogs and cats. (See, www.barf.com site, Dr. Ian Billinghurst) If you are a caring pack leader and sincerely speak for your dog or cat, then please educate yourself and bring health to your companion animal. My 21 year old cat, Micio, along with his 16 year old gal pal is thriving since we switched several years ago. Reality check: is it in your veterinarian's interest to keep your animal well? Ask your own doctor how many courses in nutrition and diet did they have in medical school? Peace out.

The vet told me yesterday not to change his food again right now. Then i heard about the recall on the news this morning. I dont think the Iams proactive large breed is being recalled, but not sure what to do now.

My dog's bloody stools, diarrhea and intestinal distress occurred each time he ate a meal of Iams K-9 Low Residue dry dog food, most recently on August 1st (I took photos of his bloody stool, kept a sample, and would've gone to the vet if he had not perked up). Stupid me, each time this has happened, I'd respond by putting him back on his former canned food, whereupon he'd slowly get better. Then I'd gradually switch him back to the Iams dry food and he'd poop very bloody stools and diarrhea(I preferred dry dog food for my own convenience to get easer-to-clean-up poop). I wrongly thought it was the dryness of the Iams food that irritated his bowl. Now I realize it was probably samonella poisoning from the Iams! I've bought 3 books about balanced home-cooked pet food and I'm going to give that a try!

Seriously, I just spent 700 in the emergency room that was filled with other dogs with the same symptoms, severe abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea. That was a month ago and you are just listing this. I have returned to making their food once again and will not buy dog food ever again. I am not losing another dog because dog food manufacturers don't care about the quality of food they make money off of and there aren't any regulations to protect them.

Buying dog food at a grocery store is basically like feeding your dog poison. Iams is a terrible food- Eukenuba is bad as well. If you care about your pets you'd feed them QUALITY food without corn and cheap fillers! Do your research, it'd eliminate your ER visits!

My cocker spaniel got sick June 20 and I thought he was going to die. He had been eating Iams Skin and Coat for sensitive skin. He was shivering and sleeping a lot. His stools were very soft. He was weak in his back legs and simply didn't have any energy. I really thought he was going to die. He was sleeping in unusual places. He seemed restless. He is 13 years old. I took him to the vet the next day and his blood work was off the charts. The vet seemed to think he had cancer and was going to die. His pancreas was showing stress and his platelets were way off. He gave him some meds and sent him home. I decided to take him off his food and give him chicken and rice and pumpkin to help his pancreas. He started improving and has been improving since. He ran out of the his bag of dog food and I bought him a new bag of Iam's skin and coat. I think this bag is ok, but believe the bag he was on when he got sick was contaminated. Today the vet's office called me and told me to stop the Iam's skin and coat and come get a different food to feed him. The office gave me a phone number at Iam's to call to get a refund on my food. I also spoke to a representative for Proctor and Gamble to discribe my experience at the vet with Zach. I have ask them to pay my vet bill. I was lucky enough to get by with $136.00.
