Nubbins and His Bird Buddy Pose for 2014 Calendar

Green parakeet sits on white cat friend's back

When Nubbins the cat was found, he was emaciated, riddled with birdshot, and had tumors hanging from both of his ears. But the minute he was removed from his carrier by his rescuers, he started purring. He knew he was finally safe; relief was here at last.

Dr. Patricia Wagner, a veterinarian at the ASPCA Animal Hospital, performed surgery on the sweet feline and fell in love with his kind demeanor. Soon after, Nubbins joined Dr. Wagner’s household. He is incredibly grateful for his second chance and gets along swimmingly with the family’s resident parakeet.

In fact, kitty and bird are stars of the 2014 ASPCA calendar. Check out this adorable behind-the-scenes video of Nubbins sitting for his photo shoot.

Have you received your 2014 calendar? Want another one for friends or family? (They make great gifts!) Make a small donation to the ASPCA, and we’ll send you our 2014 calendar today. Thank you, as always, for your support. It makes stories like Nubbins’ possible.

Well said Ellen, I have lived with parrots for over 40 years. I have been involved with parrot rescue for 20 years. When we go out our birds normally go with us (flight feathers clipped and harness on). About 90 percent of the people we speak with, talk of their birds in the past tense. I wish I had a nickel for ever person who said "The bird and the dog or cat, got along well for years, but then the cat or dog killed the bird." The predator instinct, no matter how small, is always there. Even a small scratch from a cat can kill a bird in a couple of days, if it does not get antibiotics right away, due to the bacteria in a cats saliva. ASPCA, I have been a supporter of yours for quite some time. I know your top priority is not parrots. Please don't compromise the safety of one non-human animal for a benefit to the other. Many people seeing this photo will think it is OK for their dog, cat and bird to play together. The least you could do would be to write below the photo PLEASE DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME! BTW, on November 13th at 8PM, Nature Series on PBS has an episode on Parrot Rescue, watch and learn.

He's so sweet!

I absolutely LOVE your story and what a wonderful cat! I also believe that he is truly grateful for his second chance in life. Best wishes.

I love him as well as the little bird, they look so beautiful! Thank you ASPCA and Dr. Wagner ! I already giving my donation, deducted monthly from my acct. I don't understand why people can hurt so much these beautiful and defenseless animals, some people have no comparison with these animals, they should be caged and not the animals!!!!!!!
