Multi-State Salmonella Outbreak Highlights Horrific Conditions on Chicken Farms

Here’s one more example of how human health and animal welfare are inseparable: On October 7, the USDA announced that 278 people across 18 states have contracted salmonella from eating chicken from a certain West Coast poultry processor. Reports indicate that about 42% of the people infected have been hospitalized—about double the normal rate of hospitalization for Salmonella infections—because this strain of salmonella is resistant to several commonly prescribed antibiotics.

In a recent U.S. News & World Report story, Dr. Marc Siegel, an associate professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, explained how this life-threatening outbreak is linked to the common industry practice of feeding chickens low doses of antibiotics to compensate for the sickening conditions on factory farms:

"It's not an accident that this particular strain is resistant," he said. "I suspect it's resistant because of the overuse of antibiotics among farm animals."
Chicken live in squalor, Siegel said: "Ninety-five percent of chickens are grown in such horrific conditions that they're standing in poop and they end up infected with salmonella. If one chicken gets it, they all get it."

On top of poor living conditions on farms, most modern chickens are bred to grow so fat, so fast, that many collapse under their own weight and spend much of their lives lying in their own waste, with open sores and wounds.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Chickens deserve better, and so do we. The ASPCA is urging the chicken industry to switch to slower-growing breeds raised in better conditions. Learn more and take action at

i understand where you all are coming from but every one needs to be aware there is alot more than just farm cruelty

how people can eat meat while ignoring what they are actually eating are dead bodies i will never know.

human beings are omnivores. we [supposedly] are bright enough to make choices, & have [supposedly] also been gifted w/ compassion. why we so rarely using these abilities is as baffling to me as is our willful ignorance of our corpse chewing.

don't even start me on how we handle the human world.

Does anyone understand the potential of outbreaks of Bird or Swine Flu from this type of Mass production. The potential of Virulent Pathogens that spread rapidly and cannot be cured far outweighs just the threat from untreatable Salmonela. If this type of production isn't curbed and there was an outbreak of Bird Flu down the line, not one of these types of production farms would be held liable for the deaths of your friends or family. These types of cruelty to animals have a significant potential to affect us all. People need to pull their support of these practices by making themselves aware of Farmers that produce products humanely and naturally.

I feel so sorry that these poor chicken's have to live under such circumstances,I hope this information get's to the right person, in the mean time just give me tofu .

Putting chickens into small cages 8 or more...some are dead. They are left in the cages, is a time bomb waiting to happen this does not shock me what shocks me is there has not been more of this happening. Animals can not .... CAN in dirty cages, grates, not able to move and stay healthy. These animals are getting diseases that we have no idea about . Someday we will and there is not going to be one pill on the planet to cure it. We the people are allowing this. We must demand, we run the country, demand these factory farms close down. Let the animals roam they need to be free to get the sources to keep them healthy. To keep infections away. We are living with a time bomb.

i know have you read the spinny press book:
animal welfere and protection? it's really good
maybe that's where you get all the information.
