Manhattan Man Brutally Beats and Blinds 6-Pound Dog

Dog

On February 1, Manhattan resident Joseph Graves, 30, was arrested by ASPCA Special Agent Omar Negrillo for brutally beating and blinding his girlfriend's 6-pound Yorkshire Terrier with a belt. Graves had been pet sitting the 4-year-old pup, named Emmet, while his girlfriend, a Broadway actress, was on tour in Florida.

On January 16, at approximately 5:30 A.M., Graves lost his temper after the dog allegedly misbehaved while getting ready for his morning walk. When confronted about the incident, Graves told ASPCA investigators that the dog's actions caused him to go into a rage and beat him with a belt buckle and kick him.

Despite Emmet's serious injuries, including an eye hemorrhage, Graves waited two days before taking the tiny pup to a veterinary hospital. He was finally treated at the West Chelsea Veterinary Hospital for six broken ribs, multiple contusions, bruised kidneys and internal hemorrhaging—he also underwent surgery to have his left eye removed. Suspicious of the dog's critical injuries, the hospital staff contacted the ASPCA for assistance.

"The dog suffered traumatic injuries and could have easily died if the suspect had waited much longer," says Stacy Wolf, Vice President and Chief Legal Counsel for the Humane Law Enforcement Department. "This pet was nearly killed because this person couldn't control his temper—it's inexcusable."

Graves was charged with aggravated animal cruelty, a felony, and criminal mischief. He is currently released on $2,000 bail, and is due back in court on April 27.

Emmet is currently recovering with a relative of his pet parent.

This is what happens when people force dogs on people who do not like dogs or have no patience with them. I'll bet there were plenty of signs this guy hated the little fleabag, but the woman ignored it and insisted he look after it instead of boarding it in a kennel while she was away on an extended trip. If you're a dog freak, you should make darned certain your partner is also a dog freak because today's dogs aren't trained and behave so badly that only a dog freak can deal with them.

If the dog was 4-years-old, as the article states, it wasn't a "pup."

$2000 bail!!!!! Fines are not severe enough regarding animal abuse. If Mr. Graves (appropriate name) were here, I know how he might be punished...it wouldn't be pleasant. Low life.

How unmanly can he be that a small sweet dog could let him get that unraveled to the point of almost killing this innocent creature...and what is this woman, the owners problem, actually standing by this pathetic jackass! When he starts on her, and he will...we'll see how she feels then. Whatever happens, please do not let her have Emmet back...I have an Emmett too and he will always, always be loved and protected...just like all animals should be!

HI. I have a yorkie at home right now and I would like to adopt this dog. What is wrong with people today? Who could ever do that to a hopeless innocent little dog. THAT JUST DISGUSTS ME!

$2,000 bail? That was not enough! If he did this to a dog. What do you think he is capable of doing to a person? One goes hand in hand with the other. The man is a danger to any living being or animal.

Any cruelty or abuse to animals is a major problem with me. How though could you hit such a small dog like that ? The belt buckle was probably the size of that dogs head !

This makes me sick. I guy that flies into a rage after a tiny dog misbehaves is seriously unhinged. As another post mentioned, I hope Emmet's care person, takes a serious look at herself and realizes, a loser who would injure & almost kill her dog, is NOT someone to be involved with! I wish this guy would have to go on probation and if he exhibited violent behavior of ANY type towards an animal or person, he'd go to jail for a while.

$2,000.... is that it? So Graves is allowed to continue living his life as usual while Emmet now suffers irrepairable damages and altered life. How repulsive. Seriously, the American judicial system needs to impart much stricter consequences for cruelty to animals, especially given that over 50% of American households own pets and the majority, if not all of them, consider their pets to be family members ("kids"). I wonder if Graves would be out on $2,000 if he did this to a 4-year old child?!!

Who would hurt an animal? Even if that dog was misbehaving he did not deserve that man to be so abusive. It is very wrong to punish an animal to that extent. Monique I am only 11 too and I promise to help animal cruelty in any way when I am older.

too bad we can't kick him and beat him with a belt buckle like he did to this poor dog

  • Submitted by Jess C at:February 12, 2010 12:00 AM

He's beyond anger management. Why don't they just surgically remove one of his eyes, and maybe a testicle - he'll understand pain and anguish. Thankfully the dog is in better hands and hopefully the abuser's sentencing is severe.

It should go back to eye for eye tooth for tooth and that will hinder such acts of cruelty. Whatever the person does to the animal should be done to the person!

  • Submitted by Janet at:February 10, 2010 12:00 AM

If I learned my mate did this-he would no longer be with me. It saddens me to see that people are capable of such horrendous acts of cruelty. I'm thankful that perhaps with organizations like this one and the people that join like us-we can be the majority and cruelty the minority!!!!

  • Submitted by Genny at:February 9, 2010 12:00 AM

Why in the world would some ever, ever freakin get the idea to do that. Some people are way dumb to ever hurt a living thing like that.

  • Submitted by Carleigh at:February 9, 2010 12:00 AM

This man should never be allowed to see the outsied world and make him face how the dog feels being blind. KEEP HIM IN JAIL FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE

I hope that young woman has enough sense to dump this guy. She obviously has poor judgement in men.

this guy is a disgrace and should be held accountable for his actions. poor dog that suffered this tragic incident. put laws into effect to protect our precious animals.

  • Submitted by sharon at:February 8, 2010 12:00 AM

what that poor dog went through someone should do the same thing to that guy he should be beaten with a belt buckle

  • Submitted by Cass at:February 5, 2010 12:00 AM

OMG, This is horrible!! That poor dog had no chance to defend himself, this is inexcusable! I don't think there should be a bond option, I don't even think this man deserves to go to jail, he deserves to be covered in honey and tied down to a fire ant bed!
