Learn the Truth About Chicken

The ASPCA is excited to announce the launch of a new farm animal campaign focusing on the plight of chickens raised for meat (often called “broiler” chickens). Roughly 8.5 billion chickens are raised in the U.S. annually, most on squalid factory farms where there is no government oversight of their treatment.

The issue is not just the treatment of chickens, though: it’s that modern chickens are selectively bred to grow so large, so fast, that they struggle to simply move or stand.

Today’s chickens are bred to have such massive and disproportionate bodies that they often collapse and spend most of their lives lying helplessly in their own waste. Many have open wounds, which act as gateways to infections that can be passed on to people. Don't be fooled: Most chickens who wind up on American dinner plates bear no resemblance to the healthy-looking, active birds you may have been led to expect.

The ASPCA is calling on the chicken industry to do better—but to make sure they’re paying attention, we need to show them that people like you care about how chickens are raised, too.

Visit to learn more, then add your voice to the chorus of concerned Americans asking the chicken industry to change its inhumane practices.

By insisting on slower-growing chickens and better conditions, we can reduce suffering and raise healthier birds who may be less likely to spread dangerous infections like salmonella. But to get the chicken industry to move in the right direction, they need to see that people like you are paying attention—and counting on the industry to do what’s right for chickens and consumers.

We need you on our side: Please tell the chicken industry it’s time for slower-growing chickens raised in safer, more humane conditions. Speak out today by adding your name to our Truth About Chicken petition.

Dear Edy,

What do you think the chickens, cows, pigs, etc. who are brought into this world solely for our consumption eat? You didn't replace a layer of suffering, you just added to it.

No, we can't eliminate suffering, but we can certainly minimize it.

my cow's are 100% grass fed, can't say that bout the chickens, but it takes less space and animals too a point are good to eat anything

If you really care to debate this topic with people who will gladly take the time to throw actual statistics at you, you should move over to the Care2 web site. Although if you want to be taken seriously, you might consider a different name.

I don't believe that farmers in Georgia are any better than anywhere else. The way chickens are treated is disgusting & should be banned.

June Arseneault

I strongly
believe that the way the chickens, like a lot of other animals, dogs, etc., are treated is thoroughly disgusting & they should ALL BE BANNED!!! Please tell me, who has the right to treat any one of GOD'S precious animals to be so cruel to them!!!

Thank you June. No animal on earth has been spared the cruelty of the human animal. I would go so far as to say no creature has been safe from man's greed and cruelty. Every animal feels fear, pain and love, and every animal has its own unique intelligence. I prefer to eat only fish and/or chicken twice a week. I am healthier than ever and the only member of my family who does not have high blood pressure or problems with cholesterol. Could very well be because I avoid meat from cows, pigs and sheep. My siblings all love their meat and that is their choice and I make no comments on their eating habits. But it is wrong to treat the animals we eat in such an atrocious manner such as goes on in Factory Farms.

I agree. Overall I think, we should not eat these animals and we will survive. There are other means to eat without contributing to the cruelty of the chickens and other animals. Yes, we are animals too but still I think that we are not supposed to eat other animals and diseases might give us a clue why we shouldn't. It's a never ending struggle and issue that could exist till the end of the world and it's unfortunate that it's the way it is, but it would be great if someday things will change for the better and we don't have to eat meat period! I for one would be all for saving all the animals. What if someday just for humor, the animals become the dominant of the world and we are now a part of their food chain, how do we react and how sad for us then or maybe that's the time we realize how they have endured the suffering all this time. It is almost true that if we only take a moment and think of the guy up above, he does not eat meat and maybe there's a reason there why he doesn't although it doesn't say in the bible do not eat meat or else. Lots of issues and suffering as we know it that exist from day one to this day, and sometimes you wonder why it's this way and how can we change the future to not have anything suffer I know it's impossible to come up with the right and fair answer. In the end I know that animals are God's children and if anyone can think of it that way then maybe there's a chance that we can save all animals which is I know it's almost an impossibility but I sure wish there's a miracle that can change things they are now.

Yes, yes, yes. If we cannot treat them humanly and give them decent lifecycles then we do not deserve to eat them.

YES! They are GOD'S children too!!!! Christ likens HIS love as a Hen's to it's chick and there are over 150 laws in the Bible against eating meat. also GOD does give us a PLANT-based diet in teh beginning, NOT meat!!! Animals were created to be companions and help-mates, created befroe Woman too! Also think about in the Manger, there were more animals there than people for Chrit's birth and GOD had Noah take 2 of every animal into the ark and out of ALL teh humans on the planet at that time only Noah's family were on teh ark, that says ALOT!!!!!!!!!!!
Christ is the LAMB of GOD and the DOVE of PEACE! there are also many verses stating how GOD blesses animals, etc.!

Farmers may be the salt of the earth but they're not GOD. They are being persecuted for their inhumane treatment of animals, whether it is by the universe or a supreme entitiy. Until they understand that animals have feelings and feel pain and stop thinking of them as just a "Meal-Ticket," they will never be blessed or happy.
