Learn the Truth About Chicken

The ASPCA is excited to announce the launch of a new farm animal campaign focusing on the plight of chickens raised for meat (often called “broiler” chickens). Roughly 8.5 billion chickens are raised in the U.S. annually, most on squalid factory farms where there is no government oversight of their treatment.

The issue is not just the treatment of chickens, though: it’s that modern chickens are selectively bred to grow so large, so fast, that they struggle to simply move or stand.

Today’s chickens are bred to have such massive and disproportionate bodies that they often collapse and spend most of their lives lying helplessly in their own waste. Many have open wounds, which act as gateways to infections that can be passed on to people. Don't be fooled: Most chickens who wind up on American dinner plates bear no resemblance to the healthy-looking, active birds you may have been led to expect.

The ASPCA is calling on the chicken industry to do better—but to make sure they’re paying attention, we need to show them that people like you care about how chickens are raised, too.

Visit to learn more, then add your voice to the chorus of concerned Americans asking the chicken industry to change its inhumane practices.

By insisting on slower-growing chickens and better conditions, we can reduce suffering and raise healthier birds who may be less likely to spread dangerous infections like salmonella. But to get the chicken industry to move in the right direction, they need to see that people like you are paying attention—and counting on the industry to do what’s right for chickens and consumers.

We need you on our side: Please tell the chicken industry it’s time for slower-growing chickens raised in safer, more humane conditions. Speak out today by adding your name to our Truth About Chicken petition.

you've only seen evidence from a handful of companies, most all those videos are of the same farms and companies. I have been to many farms and chickens are not raised in cages in any of them and electric prods are illegal in most places, our chickens and cows are so used to and unafraid of people that some will even attack any new comer cause they have no idea what true fear is and have never been intentionally harmed even when they deserve or need it cause you literally can't get them to move where they need to be or out of your way so you can fix something to keep them comfortable and safe... if they were in the natural wild acting like that would get them killed, they really are stupid little things.

These animals should still be treated humanely and have decent lifecycles.

May everyone read further down to a few knowledgeable responses regarding chickens. Did you know there are hundreds of breeds of chickens that come in all sizes and lay all sizes & color of eggs? There are missing facts in this report but would love to see names & where these things are happening. Don't support anything or anyone without facts that can be verified or you'd be the blind sheep following a goat who just wants your field of grass. Think about the facts the report states to support the cause. Good fact based causes are important but misinformation without fact is spread too easily these days. Read more comments before you believe...ok?

Excellent point. It is the greed and excess production that is at fault. "All things in moderation" should be our rule of life. And that includes eating.

Humans are not true carnivores. Humans also have eaten each other, and there is quite a long history of this. I suggest that if eating flesh is so important, eat human flesh, and eat it raw--like a real carnivore.

Huh? That does not sound like a realistic solution. Your leader, Jeffrey Dahmer, just sent me a message from the grave...."Don't bring me in to this..."

wow that was the most ignorant thing I've read on here, man has been eating flesh since b4 the missing link. do you know how hamburger was originally made and ate? it was the meat scraped off the skin after cleaning the animal and it was ate raw... that's what your appendix was originally for but after thousands of years of cooking our food we evolved to not use it, but u can still eat small amounts of raw red meat and digest it fine, and if it wasn't for all the toxins and unnatural things we consume people would be good eating, I invite you to my place and we'll remove your thigh muscle and make a pot roast, ok, sound good to you? it does me, I got no problem eating people if I had to too survive but people aren't going to let you eat them and well some animals won't fight that's why we eat them and not dogs or horses... O and here's a fun fact, humans like our primate cousins do not mate for life, its unnatural. but we fight it and try anyway, so does this mean we should give in to instinct and screw like rabbits with anyone we feel the desire? apes have orgy's to release tension and make stronger bonds in the herd, and so did people until religion came along, so can we go back to that way of thinking? I'm game but I doubt you or the rest of the world is... I think animals whether raised for food or not have it good, as long as they get food water and fresh air without being abused all they got to do is hump, eat, drink, sleep, and shit without worry and all as they have the urge too... Hell wish my life was that easy

Than you should also know Eric that at least animals that hunt other animals do so in the wild. The hunted are free and at least have a chance to escape, it evens the odds don't you think? Humans can live without meat but not without vegetables so what do you say about that. Protein can be gotten from many sources not just meat so don't even go there! It's usually men who do most of the slaughtering so I'm assuming you have slit a few throats? Mmmm, how did that meat taste Eric?

all animals can go without meat, and actually I can live without vegetables; insects, dirt, and some sea creatures can provide everything you need to live, but dirt tastes bad and so do most insects. does this mean we should stop animals from eating eachother too? and almost all animals hunt in packs and/or go after the weakest slowest of the prey, its never a fair fight. And I like most people eat meat cause it tastes good and that's what being on the top of the food chain is all about. eating cause you can and it tastes good, even animals prefer taste to bland, that's why bears eat honey and most dogs won't eat vegetables cause taste... I mean sperm is good for you but you won't catch me putting it in my mouth and just a guess but prolly not yours either! look it up, it can actually nutritionally sustain you for a long time and wouldn't harm anyone to milk it, but you don't see any cock farms do you? Stop thinking so much and enjoy life, cause it could end short with you on the menu for all kinds of creatures, its not quantity its quality otherwise nothing would be fun or tasteful. And I can say with certainty that my birds have the best quality I can provide for their life short lived as it may be they have it good
