Learn the Truth About Chicken

The ASPCA is excited to announce the launch of a new farm animal campaign focusing on the plight of chickens raised for meat (often called “broiler” chickens). Roughly 8.5 billion chickens are raised in the U.S. annually, most on squalid factory farms where there is no government oversight of their treatment.

The issue is not just the treatment of chickens, though: it’s that modern chickens are selectively bred to grow so large, so fast, that they struggle to simply move or stand.

Today’s chickens are bred to have such massive and disproportionate bodies that they often collapse and spend most of their lives lying helplessly in their own waste. Many have open wounds, which act as gateways to infections that can be passed on to people. Don't be fooled: Most chickens who wind up on American dinner plates bear no resemblance to the healthy-looking, active birds you may have been led to expect.

The ASPCA is calling on the chicken industry to do better—but to make sure they’re paying attention, we need to show them that people like you care about how chickens are raised, too.

Visit to learn more, then add your voice to the chorus of concerned Americans asking the chicken industry to change its inhumane practices.

By insisting on slower-growing chickens and better conditions, we can reduce suffering and raise healthier birds who may be less likely to spread dangerous infections like salmonella. But to get the chicken industry to move in the right direction, they need to see that people like you are paying attention—and counting on the industry to do what’s right for chickens and consumers.

We need you on our side: Please tell the chicken industry it’s time for slower-growing chickens raised in safer, more humane conditions. Speak out today by adding your name to our Truth About Chicken petition.

Silly silly peeps!!! Naive creatures! Just because a group of people say they support something doesn't mean they are golden behind closed doors! Listen to the news folks...duh! How many "Pastors" out there are port addict child molestors? They preach a good story and then behind closed doors do what they want. Same with foster many kids there are neglected??? OPEN the eyes. Someone said something about the mighty dollar, and I agree with them. Animals even those to be served on a dinner plate should be treated with dignity and respect. I'm just saying. Now I'm hungry....

It is unfortunate they are part of the food chain, it's terrible and very sad. Let's join and make a difference to their world and maybe we figure something to change the future and not have chickens as part of the world food chain. There are other sources of food to eat in this world. It's unfortunate that for them and other animals planet earth is hell, and maybe why there are so many diseases that most people are not even aware and not paid attention which could very well tell us that we're not supposed to eat them and it's simple, they can feel pain and suffering and hell right here in our planet is what hell is all about. Continue doing a great job and maybe together slowly we can change the future and fight and end the cruelty!

Not only is this inhumane and cruel, but chickens these days do not taste as good as they used to in the 1930 and '40s. I should know--I grew up then. Chickens were delicious food, smaller, and without so much fat. There IS a difference in taste, which only we old folks recognize.

join the fight just because one state treats chickens right what about the other 49

The "meat" industry (companies) are constantly cited by USDA, but a warning, "don't do it again". No one really gets prosecuted unless a whistleblower records what is happening. Even then, a minimum sentence, why? Because they are only animals! In other words, there is so much torture and suffering inflicted on these animals and if the animal rights organizations weren't there to protect them, it will be worst. People only care about what they are having for dinner, how big their hamburgers are, the biggest turkey or chicken to buy. Ham for the holidays, turkey for thanksgiving! What about a human body on a platter for Christmas!

you can help by buying only free range eggs and chickens. farmers are not perfect at all there are many farmers that do not treat farm animals perfect

To Sharon,( first one to make a comment) YOU are WRONG! I rescue chickens and the huge white chickens are called " Broilers" their genes were genetically altered, so they go way too fast and become huge, therefore have more flesh on them for people to eat. Again, I know, because I witness it everyday!
They have problems with their feet, and many are so fat they cannot stand! As far as farmers being the salt of the earth? Unless they are organic farmers, they are destroying the earth, with toxic pesticides,( like Round Up) and using GMO seeds, which means they are genetically modified, and spread to organic farms, taking over the Heritage seeds and destroying the natural food supply given to us by Mother Nature! You must be a farmer, ( nonorganic) to make a comment like the one you made. Why don't YOU get a life, one that doesn't torture animals and destoy the earth!

Corporations will continue their ruthless and despicable practices if we as Americans continue to support them. Our power is in how we use our money.

Unfortunately this is the one of the consequences of human overpopulation. Everything has to be done faster to meet the demand and to make more profit. It's heartbreaking what I see what us humans are doing to the planet and the animals that share it with us. Thank you, ASPCA!
