Flash Floods Leave Hundreds of Kentucky Pets Homeless

Flash Floods Leave Hundreds of Kentucky Pets Homeless

The ASPCA Field Investigations and Response Team arrived in Pike County, KY, following weekend storms that caused severe flooding and mudslides. The devastating rainfall is being blamed for multiple deaths, and a State of Emergency has been declared for the affected areas. As emergency evacuations and rescues continue, many families have been displaced from their homes—including hundreds of companion animals.

"Countless numbers of animals have been adversely impacted by the recent flooding and are in need of immediate care and housing," says Kyle Held, ASPCA Midwest Regional Director of Field Investigations and Response.

On July 20, at the request of the Pike County Humane Society, members of the ASPCA Field Investigations and Response Team were deployed to help with the crisis. The Team is currently working to transport shelter animals to a temporary location and making room for displaced pets. The ASPCA's new custom designed animal transport trailer is also on hand.

"Emergency transport will help ease the strain on the already full humane society," says Tim Rickey, ASPCA Senior Director of Field Investigations and Response. "We are grateful to be able to assist the Pike County Humane Society and to be in a position to provide aid for the animal victims."

I think that the work you do is awesome. It is distressing when you find animals that have been displaced because of natural disaster. We feed many cats and kittens that have been left, or lost after hurricanes in Florida. So keep up the good work ASPCA :)

Would love to foster one or two dogs. I have two mini schnauzers fixed and a fenced in yard, they would be indoors with us most the day, someone is always home. They would get lots of love and pampering. Please let me know if I can Help.

I would never leave my pup Missy during any storm if she could not go I would not go. I agree with Lisa why are these babies going to a new home. If they had good homes they should go back to them if not then new homes.

I will be happy to foster two dogs, cats and a couple of rabbits. I am home a good deal of the time. I have a mini schnauzer. Any animals I foster would have to be a good fit with my dog and household. I LOVE ANIMALS. I pamper them. They will be inside with the rest of us.

I live close to this area and it's not only in Pike County, KY it also happened in Olive Hill, KY and in other areas. I just hope the pets find their owners again. I hope they are not separated due to some flash flood and not able to get back to their loving owners. Owners who have done nothing wrong to have their pets taken away and adopted out. I sure hope the area officials make sure the animals taken out of the area are acually unloved and unwanted. I want the local loved pets to find their owners again. I would want that if I was accidentally separated from my cat.

This is depressing for people in KY that lost their pets due to a rainfall. I hope the families can find their pets, or their pets can find them.

It is horrible when incidents like this hit close to home. Thank you ASPCA for your continued action to save animals when crisis occurs.
