It’s Confirmed: Michael Vick Has a New Dog

Friday, October 12, 2012 - 5:45pm

It’s confirmed: Michael Vick has a new dog. To truly become a model of the type of behavior Vick wishes to teach his children—that animals deserve to be treated with compassion and respect—Vick should take the opportunity to “break the cycle” and “be an instrument of positive change” by expressing remorse about the dogs he brutalized and killed with his own hands. This is something that we’ve never heard him do publically.

Because of this, we have serious concerns about Vick’s ability to be a responsible pet owner. We can only hope that he will set the right example for his children by teaching them to foster humane habits and a lifelong bond with their family pet.

What’s your opinion?

HE SHOULD BE FORBIDDEN BY LAW TO BE ANY WHERE NEAR A DOG. HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN EXECUTED FOR HIS CRIME. AND HE STILL GETS TO PLAY FOOTBALL??? ALL PETE ROSE DID WAS GAMBLE AND HE IS BANNED FROM BASEBALL BUT THAT DOG MURDERER STILL PLAYS FOOTBALL AND HAS A NEW DOG??? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THIS WORLD???????????

A zebra NEVER changes his spots. He 'will' or is 'already' doing the evil dog fighting behind the scenes...I am sure of it. MONEY buys EVERYTHING. Vick is a piece of TRASH and should not be breathing our air!

This is the most unjust thing I have ever heard of. For those of you who say he paid his debt and apologized, he did not. He was let out early because of Wayne Pacelle's desire to turn a negative into a positive and only said what they told him he HAD to say. He expressed NO remorse - he merely read a script! Sex offenders do not get another chance to ruin another life, why should he? And seriously, what shelter would allow him to adopt? That means he must have bought one somewhere, furthering the cycle of abuse. HE SHOULD NOT BE PERMITTED TO HAVE ANOTHER CREATURE - EVER!!!!!!!

No more than a child molestor, a child killer, a animal abuser or any sort should have another chance to play with a LIFE, should he EVER come in contact with another animal. He can be sorry all he wants but he should NEVER be give another chance to torment another animal.

I'd like to point out a few things:

1: It's no longer a matter of whether or not Vick "should" have the right to another dog. According to the court judgments and the legal system, he does have the right to have another dog. That's the reality we have to deal with. The ASPCA could have supported Vick in his desire to adopt or rescue an animal. However, the ASPCA decided to say "no way!" (even given condition #2; see below). That decision may have forced Vick to buy a dog and in doing so, may have doomed one of the animals in a shelter.

2: Adoption contracts can be made incredibly strong. Remember how the dog adopted by Ellen DeGeneres was seized back by the rescue (for better or for worse)? Lifetime stringent home visits and veterinary exams can easily be made a condition of adoption. With the right contract, a rescue organization may even maintain "superior title" (ownership) of the animal and can seize the dog back at any time, for any reason. And let's not forget that Michael Vick's dog is going to be one of the most watched dogs in America. In some ways, I would feel more secure in adopting an animal to Vick because of the intense public scrutiny he and his dog will face.

3: A recent study from the University of Portsmouth (U.K.) proves that "ownership of animals was found to be the most important influence on the reporting of emotions in animals," and that "belief in animal emotions in likely to influence how animals are treated." If Michael Vick's kids grow up with a pet dog, they will likely develop a belief in animal emotions and consequently, will have far less chance of growing up to participate in animal cruelty. Developing a belief in animal emotions, which most dog owners typically do, also means that Vick himself will be influenced to interact with animals in healthy, positive ways.

I am astonished at the tone of the comments posted to this entry on ASPCA's Facebook page. Out of a professed "compassion" toward animals, multiple people are suggesting that Vick be raped, hanged, and even killed. I see absolutely no compassion and frankly, no objective or intelligence to these comments.

He should never be allowed to own any animals ever again. I would feel horrible ripping that poor puppy out of it comfortable home, but I feel that it would be in the puppy/dogs best interest but at least be placed in a foster home to not traumatize the dog more. That makes me so mad!!

So people think hes changed? really? do you want to chance that with other animals lives, certainly not me, never will....I think he is without compassion and hope he rots in hell..just saying

Maggie

I hope someone from the ASPCA will check in on his dog. He is a disgusting excuse for a human being and I just pray this beautiful dog has a good and happy life. Anyone claiming he "did his time" isn't an animal lover. There is not enough time in his miserable life to make up for what he did to those poor babies.

Belle

I hope he breaks his neck on the football field and gets paralyzed, and has to sit and watch the dog.

If a person can do what Michael Vick did - torture, ignore, exploit, and subject dogs to extreme cruelty for the fun and greed of it, he's not fit to be on this earth. You can't be sorry enough if you can do those things in the first place. There's something severely wrong with your soul. The LEAST he could do would be to spend the rest of his life giving his money to stop animal abuse....the LEAST he could do would be to spend his waking hours speaking out against it, using his football career in the best possible way to make a difference. He doesnt give a S*** about what he did....he isnt going to treat that dog with respect and treat it properly....he's not sorry. When someone is sincerely sorry it shows and they TRY to start to make it better, double the damage with positive over and over. He's gross.
