Dognapping On the Rise—Protect Your Pet

Pet theft is on the rise. The American Kennel Club, which has been tracking pet thefts since 2007, reported a 32% increase in dog thefts last year.

While some animals are snatched from their yards or during home invasions, opportunistic thieves most commonly steal dogs left in cars or tied up outside stores. In the ASPCA’s hometown of New York City, dognappings skyrocket every summer as pet parents take advantage of nice weather to combine dog-walking with errand-running.

Protect Your Pet
Avoid becoming a victim of this heartbreaking crime!

  • When running errands around town, visit pet-friendly establishments or please leave your dog at home.
  • Keep a close eye on your pet in designated off-leash areas, where he could become a target for criminals looking to make a quick buck. (Pet thieves often try to resell—or even hold for ransom—stolen dogs.)
  • Avoid leaving your pet unattended in the front yard, especially if your lawn is exposed or accessible.
  • The same rules apply for leaving your pet tied up outside a store. In addition to being vulnerable to theft and teasing, your dog might escape or get injured.
  • Microchip your pet! Microchipping can often mean the difference between temporary and permanent separation from your furry loved one.

Whenever you buy a purebred dog you are buying the probablity of an inbred medical condition. As purebreds are generally bred to a 'type' that also fosters the concentration of deleterious recessive genes. I love a particular breed which I had growing up. Since then there are three significant (deadly) conditions that are typical for that breed that were almost non-existant when I was younger so I have to accept, with sadness, that I will never have another dog of that breed unles it's a recue but evne then I have to be prepared for significant addtional vet costs. By buying a purebred you are also buying additional health problems. Weighed against the medical bills a non-breed rescue may bring because it is a rescue, I'll take the rescue every time. The bottom line: Always get a rescue. You can get almost any breed you want as a rescue if you can face the health problems. Even buying one from a reputable breeder causes production of more dogs with health problems.

wow, why all the hate? how about some respect for another persons opinion.. I think most people do the very best they can with their animal.. I know for a fact there ate cruel people in the world that intentionally treat their animals poorly. I myslef have a dog that was severely abused and emaciated when i got him. he was very shy and nervous too, so much that no one wanted to adopt him. I felt bad for him and took him home.. he is so happy and nice and beautiful that eveywhere i take him people ask me what kind of dog he is... I always say proudly he is a adopt a mutt from the pound and he is the best.. I have also owned adopted cats and have purchased a 2500 bulldog too.. i dont see anything wrong with buying or adopting both with many benefits.. I think everyone needs to do whats right for them as long as they LOVE their animals and take care of them... As for the poor people who cant afford to adopt, that saddens me because so many dogs will get euthanized and i think it would be better to get them into some home.. i wish there was a program to help these people get dogs and help them with food and medical expenses.. sometimes an animal can keep elderly or disabled going.. everyone deserves the to love a pet.. maybe instead of judging people we could all work together with our common love for animals and put that energy to starting a non profit program to help poor/elderly have and maintain and pets..

How do you report abuse of pets & remain anonymous esp.when the abuse is so blatent & pervasive in your community? Please reach out via news, TV, internet, radio & all forms of media during the entire summer to encourage pet owners to create a safe, cool, clean living space for pets because many homeowners are tying their dogs up on a short chain in 90-110 degree sun ALL DAY 24/7 for long perious w/NO food&water or leaving pets in the dark hot garages ALL DAY/night where temps climb over 100 degrees in Georgia. We see it all the time & reporting does nothing to Animal Control or Human Society does not improve the living condition of the pet. People just get more stubborn & learn how to hide the abuse or neglect better. Some leave pets in the bathroom shot up all day or steaming hot dark garages crying & howling throughout the entire neighborhood.
This is so true for 3529 Lake Forge Dr.,Fairburn Ga 30213 & Shertall Rd.Autumn Lakes Subdivision where a young male dog owner keeps 3-4Pomeranians in the garage all day while he works 12-14 hr.days.Poms hate heat or at 160 Bowhead Ct.,Fairburn,GA 30213 dogs trapped in hot garage or tied up in 95 degree sun all day on short chain w/No water&food 6-8 hrs/day or three houses@3579 Bowhead Ct.,Fairburn,Ga 30213 where 8 huge pit bull dogs kept in hot garages/crated all day. People see abuse & neglect of pets all day every day but even when reported not much is done to protect pets living conditions in the long run. People get pets to make money breeding or as toys for kids but have no real love to make the pet's living space comfortable, safe or clean.

Bravo for outing these neglectful, callous (and cruel) people. Yes, sadly in the South, the A/C is often more a non-reponder than a responder, occasionally because local authorities only fine offenders may be $50 or a slap on the wrist for the most egregious cruelty. The rest is let go, because of other major problems in the community — drug and dog fight rings, violence, child abuse or is due to callousness in the police department etc. Yes, overheated garages (and crates therein) and incredible cold garages in the North -- people seem to get a positive pleasure out of being cruel and neglectful. In our area, we organized a rescue group and contacted as many of such lousy owners as we could, and were often successful in getting dogs into better care. Sometimes, if handled right, those people are happy to rid themselves of responsibility for their dogs. At other times, they need a friendly soul to help them walk their dogs — and we did. Sometimes, the folks were aggressive and criminal, and we had to step back and win welfare for those dogs that we could reach.
