Dog Fighting Video—45 Dogs Seized in Alabama Bust

On Monday, June 1, a dog fighting operation in Randolph County was raided by the state's 5th Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force. The ASPCA dispatched forensic veterinarian, Dr. Melinda Merck, and our Mobile Animal Crime Scene Investigation Unit to collect evidence in the investigation and aid in the prosecution of the case.

Dr. Merck examined 45 dogs who were discovered tied to heavy chains and living in deplorable conditions on the two properties. She also examined partially buried skeletal remains of a dog found on site. In addition, controlled substances, illicit drugs and other paraphernalia related to dog fighting have been collected into evidence.

"These dogs definitely suffered abuse and inhumane treatment at the hands of dog fighters," said Dr. Merck, Senior Director of Veterinary Forensics for the ASPCA. "So far, we've seen that one is unable to walk, another that is limping, and many that are injured, some severely."

Check out our video footage here and stay tuned to ASPCA.org for updates on this developing story.

Morons! This sport has been around for hudreds of years and will continue. What is wrong with you?! In the end they are JUST dogs. Get on with your lives and worry about real things. Like the economy, human rights... you know, stuff that really matters. Instead, you waste your collective energy into putting people in jail for simply fighting dogs. What is wrong with you?!

It's horrible that animals in these circumstances usually pay the ultimate price and the perpetrators walk away unmarked by their crimes.

I am very angry because I feel that the punishment for fighting is not severe enough. If you kill a human, you get life, but an animal you only get 1-2 yrs. If the owner allows there dog to die they should be charged with manslaughter, too. And why don't they banned the rodeo, that's cruel too!!!

Some of the godawful things that people do to animals absolutely make me sick! If people love fighting, let THEM get in the ring and fight! People who are involved in animal fighting should get LIFE in prison with NO parole.

This is terrible. I have recently lost my dog at the age of 5 and people can actually treat these poor animals like, well, animals? These pups seem as though they were treated WORSE than animals. I dont understand how anyone could allow their PET to be treated like this. It makes me ill to think what these poor things have been through. I think these people should be chained up with a giant chain and weights pulling on their neck and left out without food, water or proper shelter. And that's being nice. Plus that, these poor babies will probably be euthanized because of the fighting. I dont have a pit but they are the sweetest things. People are terrified of them. If they are treated in the right manner when puppies, they would be just like any other dog. Heck, I "rescued" a golden retriever about 5 weeks ago, went to work then recieved a call telling me my 74 year old mother was just attacked by this dog...a GOLDEN. Now, does this mean all goldens are going to do this? I hope not because my new golden arrives TODAY! Anyway, we need to find a way to make this no longer be a "sport". There are so many things a dog cant do for themselves and they rely on us to take care of them...and people can do this? It's sickening.

I dont understand people that treat animals this way. They are so loving and trusting of humans and this is how they get treated. People caught doing this should be charged with a felony and never again allowed to have any animals. They must have no value on life whether it be human or animal. They are sick individuals.

I watched this footage with disdain these people should be hung and quartered. What right do they have to do this to any animal, these dogs like any other gave thier heart and soul to humans only to have it ripped to shreds. Personally i would prefer animals over people anyday.I have an english staffy,3 cats, birds and 1 rabbit they all give love without asking for anything in return and get along well with each other and any other adult/child or any other animal i could not imagine betraying that trust.I love these animal angels may reace and love go with you.

This is absolutely disgusting and I honor those that help these animals and deal with these cases every single day of their lives. For those that come on here and leave rude and nasty comments about how animals are lower than people: obviously, you must care somewhat to be on the ASPCA website. What were you doing first of all to be on here unless you actually care to a point? EXACTLY. Thanks. I'm planning on going to college to major in biology so that I can go into the animal rescuing field. If not that, I plan to get my degree for a veterinary assistant. I just love animals and I can't stand to see these innocent animals treated like this.

That made me SO mad! I own 3 beautiful pitbulls. They don't have a mean bone in them, none of them do. People need to learn it's the owners not the dog! This breed is just like any other, treat it wrong and it will act wrong! Iv'e seen a poodle that was way more meaner than any pitbull iv'e ever seen. The pitbull breed wants nothing more than to love a human and do all it can to please that human! Stop the stupidity! Dog fighters should get life in prison, doesn't a murderer get that atleast! I love my pitbulls and will own them always!

I watched the video. Very sad that some people abuses these animals. Does anyone know the outcome of this? I hope the people responsible for these dogs fighting gets the book thrown at them.Dog fighting should be a felony.Everyone that is involved in this should be thrown in jail and the key thrown away.

I live in Alabama, and I have a house full of rescues. When I rescued my first pit bull my entire family attempted to convince me that he would inevitably rip out my throat. Needless to say, that never happened. He is still with me, and is an absolute angel. Despite the neglect and abuse, he is perfectly social with people and animals. It disgusts me to see what humans are capable of doing to animals. What's more, I am ashamed to live in a state in which multiple dog fighting rings are busted every year. BSL has arisen as the "solution" to dog fighting in Alabama. No one bothers educating themselves on the issue. Pit bulls are not wandering the streets starting fights in some sort of dog gang. Horrible people abuse these animals and MAKE them fight. The practice of dog fighting is abhorrent, and BSL is not the solution. The striking thing about this video (besides the obviously horrible abuse) is that the dogs wagged their tales and gladly accepted human affection. That gives me hope that others will see this and realize that despite the horrors inflicted on these beautiful animals, they still have great capacity for love. I am so very grateful for the work that the ASPCA and other organizations do on a daily basis to save animals in need.

Thank you to the teams that work day in and day out to care for these animals. As a volunteer I have seen horrific scenes, and terrible cases of abuse and neglect. As sad as this video was, I noticed unlike most fighting raids, these dogs still had spirit and hope! They were smiles and wags once help was there and it was wonderful to see most dogs will have a great chance at rehabilitation and a new life. Thank you for your continued success.

As i have read most all of these comments there are many people on each side of this issue. Some people believe that animals and humans are equal, and some believe we humans are the dominant species. Well the truth is we are animals our self and just because GOD gave us the independent brains to think for oursleves doesn't mean that we can ignore some things like animal cruelty. We were all put into the world to live a happy and long life and it is a shame that some people don't think for any one other than their self and we have to live in a society that is full of hatred and cruelty. We all need to work together to fight for what we believe in. Animal cruelty has to stop and even the little things will help.

i am a responsible dog owner of a chocolate lab, "missi-lulu",and i love her just the same as i love my children! Before "Missi-lulu" came into my life i had always owned a pit-bull. I got addicted to the breed for several reasons;for the enormous loyalty they have for their owner/family,for the protection i had against harmful and violent people of todays world, for their un-dying love and devotion, for their strength and gentleness at the same time,....i could go on and on about the positives as why you should own a pit over any other breed! The "Pit-Bull" breed DOES NOT know his strenght, nor does he have the urge to "KILL" by his instincts alone. This idea has made society scared to the death of this breed for decades and it is without any doubt that this is merely an old wives tale,...a myth! These dogs are put into do or die situations time after time after time. Can you imagine the terror that goes thru them as another animal(dog)comes into their domain/territory? It would be the same as a human being attacked by another human and both individuals believing the same thought that this person is goimg to kill me right this instance and so they both try with all their might to protect themselves and their defense-mechanisms kick in and they go crazy and some even experience in-human strenght,go into a frenzy and is uncontrollable beyond their own means and completely un-stoppable untilk the other individual is no longer able to harm them or anyone else that they love! And all this-BECAUSE THEY WERE BACKED INTO A CORNER WITHOUT A CHOICE AND THERES NO WAY NO WHERE NO ONE TO WHOM THEY CAN RUN TO OR HELP THEM AND SAVE THEM! Is society scared of humans whom protect their children from a person who is trying to kill them?Is society going to condemn that parent if they killed that person who was tryig to kill their child? Does society kill that parent because the attacker was killed as the attacker was trying to kill the child/parent? HELL NO!Society views the parent as a hero, a brave person, and awards them for doing the right thing!Society feels empathy and is sorrowful that the parent/child went thru such trauma and terror!Society even will pull together and raise funds for the parent/child to overcome their fears of people again! Well im sorry to have to inform society that this is what the dogs are going thru every single time they are put into a fighting cage. This is an example of why the dog is unstoppable, of why you cant controll them at that stege of fear, this is how come the dog finds the urge to kill, ect. People who fight dogs are the murderers, they are the ones that are the dangerous ones to be feared, they are the ones that are out of control, they are the ones that are natural born killers---NOT PIT-BULLS or any other kind of breed!!!!!As i watched the vidios and read the newsletters of the alabama dog fighting ring and the wisconsin raid i sat and cried. My heart went out to these poor victoms of abuse and neglect. These animals have no choice but to defend their lives. And i will never understand how society can blame the breed and not the owner/abuser instead.Dogs have a "spirit" just like humans do, and once that "spirit" is broken it will never be the same again. I believe that with love and patience,understanding...that a dogs spirit can be repaired but never re-newed. Just as someone who is a survivior of rape, abused and neglected children/adults,ect..they will never be the same again after their attaks/treatment. Dogs need love and remember they didnt have a choice its their owners who chose it for them. I CANNOT FIND ANY EXCUSE FOR AN IRRESPONSIBLE DOG OWNER TO EVER OWN A DOG AGAIN OR CAN I EVER BLAME THE DOG FOR ITS ACTIONS OF SELF-DEFENSE!tHIS IS THE REALITY OF HOW TWISTED THIS WORLD AND ITS SOCIETY TRULEY IS!

Shame on you Dave for saying such a think. Everyone should help everyone or everything that is less fortunate. As far as anyone is concerned all things on this earth are equal and should be treated so. Animals especially just as children they are innocent beings that should be treated with just as much respect and love. Everything should be given hope. In American we have it so easy and forget all the important things because of that. Apparently you care for humans as you say but you forget what's most important and that's showing everything and everyone love and respect. I'm not saying this to make anyone mad. I just want you to realize that. No aggression should come of this. You and everyone just need to know.

TO George: If you knew anything about dogs that are trained to fight, than you would know that they are NOT supposed to be people aggressive. They are DOG aggressive, so, that is why people can pet them. TO THATGUY: We are their voices, and my tax dollars already help the "unfortunate". THANK YOU ASPCA!! Maybe some of the US's defense spending can be redirected to animal protection and enforcement agencies -- everyone write your legislators! I wanted to further comment on the posting made by Timmy in which he states his belief that the man is innocent of dog-fighting. To quote: "Submitted by Timmy at: June 12, 2009 -- "OK here's my question How can they say this dog has been fought and not just been in a scrap with a dog running lose, what is the difference... how can they tell... Easy , they cant." " The 'they' you refer to, Timmy, are medical professionals. I do not derive from your posting that you are a medical professional. Not unlike medical professionals in child abuse cases, animal medical professionals also evaluate soft tissue and bones for evidence of prior abuse, which is a science and is quite precise. As for your comment on the "good" condition of all but the emaciated dog in the video. I personally could see limping, scars and fresh wounds on some of the other dogs that were shown. Additionally, if you observed the behavior of the gold dog taken to the mobile unit, watch how he/she crouches and tucks its tail in submissive fear as the handler approaches the man under the awning. There is no question that these dogs have been abused. You might consider watching the video more closely.

Why are you all apluading the ASPCA. This man was innocent of dogfighting. Going by the video in the ASPCA blog, all the dogs except for the one with the limp looked good. Looked like some proper chain set-ups. All seemed to have dogs house, shade, and what looked like water bowls. I didn't really see any deplorable conditions, unless I missed something on the video. If I had to go by the ASPCA video alone, I'd say the guy looks innocent of dog fighting. Going by that alone, I'd say the guy is just guilty of felony drug and gun possession, NOT DOGFIGHTING. But anywho, OK here's my question How can they say this dog has been fought and not just been in a scrap with a dog running lose, what is the difference... how can they tell... Easy , they cant. Have they ever saw a yard accident, what's the difference? Its all a fight and its supposed to be down to a science now? 45 dogs and one looked bad? How many you think will be put down? All of them! yeah save the dogs

I agree with Jean and Madeleaine Kelly-Owens Thank you ASPCA Becky Unfortunatly yes even though they have an amazing disposition towards humans the agression from a dog is passed down the line to the rest of her pups that is if both parents are vicious and when a dog fighter breeds their females they breed aggressive with aggressive and then these dogs are trained to be even more aggressive and beings they are trained with small animals like kittens or cocks that make a lot of noice it curbs their aggressio to anything small and noisy like a young child and since they are trained to fight with eachother they are not good withother dogs beings makeing them not right for adoption dont get me wrong the ASPCA HAS tried to help some fighting dogs be brought away from this and have been succseful with some but the big chance these dogs could end up aggresive again or back in their previous condition beings they dont want these dogs to suffer again they have to put many down but I put trust in the spca in their choice and I think that these dogs are great and I want you to know that ADogo Argentino can be a fighting dog too and looks just like an American Pitbull Terrier and I have owned many fighting breeds and previously fighting dogs ( I did not fight them what I mean was they were rescued fighting dogs) and once taught they were great but some died sooner than expected if you want to disscuss this further email me at animalsismylife@aim.com

WHY????? There is no use in society for people that perform these acts. I recently found a female pit who had scars all over her face, the vet thinks that she was used as a bait dog because of her sex and small size. We are now in the process of rehabilitating her, she fears almost everything.Luckily I think we found her in time that there will be no permanent damage. I could never imagine my life without my dogs. And how someone could even think that what they are doing is ok is beyond me. I only wish there was more government funding for spay and neuter programs along with more aspca officers. I hope everyone of you knows how appreciated you are and that your jobs are some of the most difficult out there. THANKYOU!!!!!

I am sick of seeing these scum bags abusing this breed. I bred American Pitbull Terrier's for 28 years longer than I have had my children. I had a couple of acciden't on my yard in the first few years I was breeding, but I intentionally chose breedings that would bring down the agression on my yard. My last Pitbull I have now was the product of one of my litters that is so mellow he sits and watches my cat's eat his food. He is excellent with children, and all animals I have brought around. I can truley say he isn't much of a guard dog the only time he gets upset is if a stranger tries to aproach my Grandson when he plays outside. Of all the breeds I have owned hands down the Pitbull is the best most loyal family pet I have come across. I had a blonde male that saved my Grandson's life. Casper was almost 10 years old and hadn't been around any small children they were all grown up until my Grandson came along he was about 9 or 10 months old on my back patio in his walker I needed to go inside, and told his parents to watch him because he kept walking towards the steps which were about 3 to 4 feet high down to more concrete his walker was of course top heavy if he would have gone over the steps he would have landed on his head. My son came in looking very pale and said Casper had just his son. I asked what happened he said they had forgotten he was still out there with them they were looking into the back yard where I was having kennels put in and were distacted my Grandson's walker had gone over the edge when Casper stepped up and blocked it with his chest. My Son said he had to have been there from the time I went in, because they didn't hear the walker. When my Son turned around and saw them he said they went over to get him and Casper let out a very strange noise that he had never heard out of any of our pit's before. I told him he was probably saying where the hell have you been. My Grandson was just sitting there playing with Casper's ears and patting his back. I Thank God every day for that incredible Dog. He became my Grandson's Guardian nobody could mess with that little boy with Casper around he wouldn't have it. If he heard the baby cry he would run to find him to make sure he was okay. My Grandson is now 8 years old. I lost Casper about a year and a half later to Cancer. My Grandson still talks about him and how much he misses him. Unfortunately there are a whole lot of ignorant people out there giving this beautiful breed a bad name. It's not the dog it's the owner!!!!!!!! I really hope they lock those DIRTBAG'S up for good!!!!!!!!

Dog fighting is absolutely disgusting! These horrible people should be put in jail for life, if not anything worse. To the people who think dog fighting is amusing, you guys are terrible, nasty, useless, no-brain, heartless people. I really mean that. Thank you to the ASPCA for all that you do, you guys really are awesome! I LOVE animals, and I will keep doing all that I can to help!

All I can say is thank god for the ASPCA and all that you do for these helpless animals. If it wasn't for all of you were would they be??? This just to sad to watch, but yet needs to be seen by everyone whom loves animals! Maybe if everyone stands together and fights we can put all of the people who abuse these helpless animals in prision one by one! Something needs to be done! Jail time must be mandatory for abuse like this not just a fine, but also BIG slap on the wrist!

I just watched the video and am appaled. I prefer dogs to people and when I saw the condition of these dogs and still their tails wagged when approached - they have more decency than human being. I hope these mens photos are shown all over the world in the hope they never ever own an animal. I commend the people who saved them. I am emailing this from Ireland where this is going on as well. THE LAWS MUST CHANGE AND LONGER SENTENCES SHOULD BE GIVEN. ANIMALS NEED TO BE PROTECTED.

I thank god for the ASPCA every day. I know that they are people who really care about animals as I do. I've always said I get along better with animals than people. All my cats have "adopted" me. I would have more, but there is a limit (unfortunatly) for city limits. Those people will get theirs and I hope the whole world will see how vile they are.

Please find and prosecute these people who have no hearts and can treat dogs this way. Even after what those dogs have been through they still were excited to see people. I support the ASPCA 100% and would like to do more.

  • Submitted by RENEE at:June 10, 2009 12:00 AM

We are just like the dogs in the video...we all need the same basic things in life: food, water, shelter, and we do need love. We need others to help us when we're sick, pick us up when we're sad and stay with us when we're lonely. My dog does all of those things for me. That can never be taken away from me. People who torture animals need to be placed in a small unit without all the necessities that we all need and enjoy outside a cell. And these people need to be shown how it feels to be treated "like dogs." I am so sorry for everything these dogs have been subjected to. God help them and the officers and citizens who live to protect these irreplaceable creatures!

I commend the ASPCA and the animal control workers who bring the owners of dog fighting rings to justice. They have a tough job, one that I couldn't do, but they go out there everyday and see things no one should have to see. The people who treat animals badly deserve to be treated the same way they treat animals. Animals have as much right to live as any human, if not more than those who would treat them badly.

That is the best they truly deserve as they are lower than any living creature in the world. I thank God for the ASPCA as they are Angels for all animals on Earth, for sure !!!!!

This is in response to Chi lover's comment. It only proves that people like yourself continue to be satified staying ignorant when it comes to dogfighting. Do you honestly think that people that investigate these things on a daily basis don't recognize cruelty when they see it? Give me a break. You comment on the injured paw and what you didn't happen to notice the scars all over this dog's face? Either educate yourself or get a pair of glasses. I commend the people that have the ability to help these dogs. As a dog trainer, I think it's only fair that these people should suffer the way these dogs suffer. The justice system is too soft and it's time for serious change.

I agree Chi Lover needs alot of education along with alot of people in this world. As someone who has been had to rescue and take care of pitt bulls so wrongly treated, their is alot of very obvious signs of fighting. I can also tell you as I have done what I do FOR NO MONEY WHAT SO EVER!!!!!! It's not about money. The reason they didn't attack the SPCA staff is because these dogs are trained to attack other animals and extremely loving towards people. It's a shame that all people seem to be concerned about is Michael Vick. Poor Vick, all that money and all that talent, what about the dogs who looked to him for care. Those dogs wanted nothing more than to be loved and even as they were being tortured for someone's sick entertainment, they would still do all they can for you affection. I suggest to all those who can't understand all this, go volunteer at your local animal shelter. I don't mean drop to pet a few animals, really go spend alot of time every week with these animals, get to know them, see what they go through and then make your decision. They are the ones who have my sympathy, not Michael Vick or anyone else who choses to torture animals. I support the SPCA 100%.

If we can sentence a human to death for killing another human, then we should also be able to sentence them to death for killing another animal in such a way. This is a disgrace. I do not understand how the law does not consider this? My two dogs are just like my children. I am 21 years old and have decided not to have children, my 2 little pup dogs Shelbie and Marley are my children. So if someone were to do this kind of thing to them how is not fair for that person to go to prison for life? They are just like my children I love them as much as, if not more than, I would an actual human child. So the punishment should be equal to what we sentence for the killing of a human being. Animals become family and they have rights too... We need to do something about this. I dont even know where to begin but we need to find a way to make the punishment as equal to animals as it is for humans...

In all honesty the punishment these people deserve is what they put the animals through. How is it fair that people can do these things to adorable, loving animals and get away with just a fine? I think that for killing an animal,or putting its life in danger, they should be sent to prison for 25 years to life, just like they would for killing another human being. Animals have more right to be here than we do, they arent the ones ruining everything, we are. These people so put animals deserve to be treated the way they treated these animals... I believe so strongly in that. Its how it should be

I agree with Mr.Smith. If these dogs would have been mistreated they would have attacked the animal control officers instead of wagging their tails. Fact is one dog had a sore leg and the rest looked well fed and watered. There is no video that dog fighting took place and the law rests on evidence and there is not enough to convict. The dog with a sore leg could have arthritis. It happens in older dogs. But realize this: People are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Not the other way around. Just because something is written in a paper doesn't mean it's fact. Look at some of the Humane Society videos. They put dogs to sleep if they don't get enough funding and that's why they need these stories to get out to the public. It all comes down to money....

All people do not get the same sentence for the same crimes and dogs should not all get treated as if they are aggressive no matter what the circumstance and when they are aggressive they should not be put down because of an inhumane humans actions. Our animals were all created by God for us to take care of them - There are too few animal lovers in this world already - so there are more than enough people to fight human causes. The SPCA blog is not the place for that. Our animals need help and our laws are not sufficient - Have you looked into an abused animals eyes lately? My staffie is like a child in our house - WHy? because she deserves to be treated with love and respect - after all that is what she is giving me......

For all of you out there who still thinks there was no dogfighting, get your head out of the hole in the ground!!! Normal owners exercise their dogs by walking or running them, not tie them to some machine that makes them run. Normal owners take their dogs to the vet when their dogs are sick or injured, not try to treat them with god knows what medicine they keep at home. You would have to be blind to say this is a normal residence with healthy, happy dogs. This whole scene is sad, but more than that, it's very disturbing to me. The capacity of these people to inflict so much harm to another living thing just makes me lose faith in mankind. The government is not helping to restore that because laws now are just too lenient on these criminals. Awful.

Sometomes I wonder which species is really the animal. The shame of this whole thing is not only being forced to fight to the death at times but the dog suffers even more becase he can't be adopted out and most times have to put-dowm. Maybe the animals that do this should be put down and even that is more than they deserve.

Watching this video, made me so upset. I don't think I could ever understand why people would or want to abuse animals. I hope these men get a very harsh sentence. I wish in some cases that the person/s who abuse cat's, dog's etc... can be put through the same abuse. I hate people who mistreat animals. A big Thanks to those people who care and are out there helping these mistreated animals. I would love a job like that. I love all animals and feed the strays around my way. Plus the two cats @ home I have.

I would like to point out the success of the Vicktory dogs at Best friends - these dogs used to be fighting dogs, some of them were bait dogs, and now they're all much happier, and many have even been adopted! Pitbulls are not used as fighting dogs because they "like to fight" or some BS like that, they only do so because they love humans, and are loyal to them, and therefore do whatever makes their humans happy. It is terrible that some humans choose to exploit these incredibly loving dogs in this way. I am really hoping that the HSUS will seriously consider sending these are other seized fighting dogs to Best Friends, given their amazing record with being able to rehabilitate these dogs through the simple application of love, time, and quality care. It can be done - it's been done before!

I think anyone that ties an animal to a chain should have one put around their neck and left outdoors to suffer. In response to the comment made by "bullygirl" you should be ashamed to even state people keep their dogs in that condition and there was not enough evidence to point to dog fighting in the AL raid. Who in their right mind keeps that many dogs chained up with cages and other items pointing to dog fighting. I support the ASPCA for their diligence in saving animals that are mistreated. I'd report anyone if proper care and treatment was not given to an animal. I wish the penalties for dog fighting and animal cruelty were tougher and fines higher. Over the past few months, I've found 5 dead pitbulls on the road I drive to work everyday and called to have them picked up. I've notified local authorities to look around that area for possible dog fighting. It saddens me to see animals harmed and left on the road for no reason. My hats off to the ASPCA and other organizations fighting to stop animal cruelty.

ok, those dogs for the most part looked fat and happy.. and unless the authorities caught the dogs fighting in the act, they cant say that the dogs were used for fighting.. just because a dog has scars doesnt mean it was a fighting dog.. i really wish that the ASPCA would do their own research before they start putting "fight bust" videos out there.. there is no proof these dogs were used for fighting . some folks keep the breed this way and dont fight their dogs..

This is so terrible!!! I am having a hard time finding words to express my discuss and horror after seeing such horrible things done to these beautiful animals. I agree that Federal Offence should be put on these people who do this kind of bulleying to poor defensless animals of any kind. Please keep doing the great work you are doing to put an end to this so called sport, and make the fines and prison time so long and costly it becomes less interesting to these low life idots. My sincere appologies for the gross injust these poor dogs have received at the hands of these useless people. I am hoping these animals will get a chance for a good home like Vick's dogs did. That made my heart happy when I saw how they had come out of Vick's place and most of them are now living a good life. As for the men who did this, get them and get them good for us all. Please excuse my spelling, we need a spell check on this site.

I appologize for the inappropriate language...i was simply trying to make a point. the "clean" version of my comment.... Like I said, I'm not defending this kennel. I'm not saying they are innocent by any means but people seem to forget how the breed came about. there are too many "petbull' owners out there that are attempting to "humanize" these animals. you never heard of any BSL until a bunch of peddlers got ahold of this breed and started selling them to the general public. the average joe has no business with a PITbull. heidi, i know my history and i understand the nature of this breed better than anyone on this blog. i own several APBTs, not those diluted AmBullies either...true bulldogs. i am a very responsible owner. why is that?...because i understand their nature. they simply enjoy fighting with one another. we as responsible owners have to take neccessary steps to avoid yard accidents. i don't know anyone that owns this breed that hasn't had a few slip ups. i just see how everyone is so quick to judge these so called "dog fighters". they deserve their day in court just like everyone else. they are innocent until proven guilty. i have seen too many raids that have went down all because of the ASPCA and HSUS simply wanted to wipe out the bloodline. you can deny that all you want but i still know the truth. look at mr. floyd boudreaux for example. they wiped out his entire yard, destroyed all the dogs before the man even had his day in court. the charges were dropped because there wasn't sufficient evidence to prove anything. now a 70 year old man was left with nothing. a whole life's work flushed away by HSUS. it's a wonder they didn't cause the man to have a heart attack. he is just one example, there are plenty of others that have been wrongly accused simply because of the very breed they own. now i am fully aware of the M.V. case as well as others where the accused were guilty as charged. i'm not so naive that i don't see this but to compare these people to MV is absurd. if they are found guilty of animal cruelty, then they will have to live with that...none of you people. i am against all forms of animal cruelty as i love my dogs like my own children but a bulldog doing what he was bred to do isn't cruel if you ask me. anyone that has to torture and abuse a dog into fighting is a dirtbag that doesn't own a true gamedog. a true gamedog will fight willingly, heidi, so don't patronize me with that crap. if people can't get around this, they shouldn't ever own a gamedog or at least a gamebred dog....EVER. faint-hearted and timid people have no business with an APBT but don't have the right to take them away from the people that CAN properly handle this breed. If I want to buy a Ferrari, that's my right. it doesn't mean i want to go join the LeMans circuit either. so you guys can call me what you like but you won't see any of my dogs out in a dog park tearing into poor little Fluffy either. it's the folks that want to be ambassadors for this breed and prove how loving they really are that are conributing to the demise of the American Pit Bull Terrier just the same. leave this breed up to the ones that understand them. that is why the shelters are full of these dogs now...people fear what they don't understand.

Thank you ASPCA for saving those dogs. I am a pitbull owner too. My beloved Beau had to be put to sleep because of cancer. He was my best friend and the sweetest dog ever. It has only been about 2 months since he has been gone. I almost didn't want another dog because I could not bear to lose one again. But thank God my son saw how unhappy I was. I am now the proud owner of a 10 week old females pitbull. She is my little darling. These dogs are wonderful family pets and are so loyal. It takes a real monster to do what this guy did. I hope he rots in h****. If I had the space/land I would have more than one pitbull. What they should do is put him in the pit and fight for his life like those poor dogs had to do. I say throw the book at him and all those other dumb butts who think fighting dogs is a sport. Michael Vick didn't do near enough time or suffer enough for what he did. Thank God for Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and Bad Rap for the work they accomplished in proving that fighting dogs can become family members and a tribute to their breed.

I have to admit that I am really tired of hearing the canard consistently repeated by people who subtly (often even coarsely) argue against the Pit Bull/AmStaff claiming Pit Bulls "genetically" or "instinctively" fight without EVER providing any objective scientific evidence of such - the claim isn't factually supported, to my knowledge. I'd honestly like someone who believes this myth, to cite their source, name the study or publication which definitively proves that all or even most Pits/AmStaffs are genetically or "instinctively" more inclined to fight or bite. After my service in Vietnam I used my GI Bill to Major in Public Health and Formal Philosophy. I've got both an employment background in medical science and in teaching "critical thinking" at a college level so I'm very good at research yet, so far, have been unable to find any credible study asserting or proving that Pit/AmStaffs when nurtured properly have any heightened fight response in contrast to any other dog similarly raised and I'm interested also in any study which includes and contrasts levels of aggression with well cared for Pits/AmStaffs to the many poorly nurtured, unfortunate dogs (other breeds) kept caged or chained chronically and never properly walked or otherwise exercised. From my own reading and research it appears that aggression and biting are more likely to come from a dog whose owners FAIL to socialize their pets relative to people and other dogs: e.g., keeping a dog chained 24/7 to a 20 ft space or less; heck, prisoners at the Super Max lockdown up at Pelican Bay prison here in CA get at least 1 hour out of 24 hours to exercise ... an owner who chains or pens a dog 24/7 is creating an un-socialized, potentially dangerous dog, regardless of breed. As one of the earliest animals ever domesticated by humans (and there are exceptions in EVERY breed) I think one needs to pay MORE attention to "nurture" rather than "nature" (ie., "instinct") in raising a good dog (regardless of breed) at this point in canine/human history. My 9 month old red nose male is constantly the target of aggression from other breeds (many confined in small backyards and rarely walked) large and small (probably because he is a big, muscular, friendly and not shy puppy - ironically, when neutering him per SF's 10 + page Pit Bull breed specific law my vet theorized that one of the pluses in altering him is that other males of all breeds would be less likely to attack my dog). My dog has NEVER been charged by another Pit/Amstaff in our walks or at the dog park. In fact, from direct experience it appears to me that the most offensively aggressive dogs charging my big, goofy pup are miniature poodles and the like. Go figure: does this mean that these miniature poodles are "instinctively" more aggressive or are they possibly not well socialized? Most of the Pit/Amstaffs we meet on our walks uniformly want to play with with my pup and many of the females seem to want to mother him, gently putting him in check when his manners lapse and he does not respond by fighting (true of him before and after being neutered). In fact, the only breeds showing aggression towards my big muscular pup (aside from the miniatures) are a variety of other unaltered male breeds. And in those cases, after being snapped at, my pup does not resort to aggression and he comes back at the aggressive dogs without fear and with signals that he wants to play. I've never witnessed an "instinctual" response to either fight or flee when my dog is being pushed by other aggressive dogs, large or small. The only instinctual impulses I ever see him give way to relate to eating, sleeping, and, uh, "elimination!" Now, this isn't a large enough sample to be a scientific study relative to my pup and his breed, but, epistemologically, it is an clearly observable fact of nonaggression that contradicts (in this one animal - and in logic it only requires ONE COUNTEREXAMPLE to disprove a general Universal claim or thesis about anything) the fuzzy thinking of those attached to "instinctual" aggression innate to Pits/AmStaffs. Heck, maybe we could sample all of our fellow Pit/AmStaff owners on this blog and create a small ad hoc study of just our dogs relative to the truth of the claim of "instinctual" aggression. It wouldn't be a "clean" double-blind truly scientific study and it would be technically hear-say evidence. Well, just a goofy suggestion on my part; frankly, I really would like anyone seriously claiming that all Pits/AmStaff are uniformly genetically or instinctively more aggressive than any other dog when all nurturing factors are the same. Point me towards a REPUTABLE, controlled scientific study proving this instinctual aggression thesis: I'm an open reasonable guy ready to read it and evaluate it. In any event, there is no excuse for the abuse the ASPCA has uncovered in this instance. And what's the evidence the SPCA kills pit bulls? In SF it is a "no-kill" shelter and the only upside to SF's draconian pit bull laws requiring spaying and neutering at 6 months is a noticeable reduction in abandoned pits: though I am still offended by this breed specific law.

There are some very mixed views on this story. Some people believe that what has happened here is simply someone owning a lot of dogs and do not use them for illegal purposes. Also that the ASPCA have poked their noses in where it is not needed. Now after reading the FORS and AGAINST, please people there is only one story here. It is very clear from the Video footage that some of these Dogs are in need of Medical attention. Obviously ASPCA have not shown the dogs that are in more desperate state. I thank you for that, this is disturbing enough. Anyone who wants to own 45 dogs (or more) can only have them for one reason and one reason alone. Especially this Breed of dog. I remember when I lived back in the UK back in the 1980's. We went through a spat of Dog rounding up backed from the Government. All Pit Bulls were seized and put down. The dog had been given a BAD REPUTATION and nobody was allowed to own this particular breed of dog. Even pets from responsible owners, their dogs seized and put to sleep. There was a huge outcry and people got very angry over this Stupid and Needless practice that was passed via the Government. Nobody understood was was going on and that it was the owners who were not responsible but used this dogs for fighting that began the clamp down on all these dogs. It was very sad as it appeared almost on the news everyday. When Michaels Vicks case came to light, it was reported that all of the dogs were found good homes after being socialised properly except one dog which was extremely violent. Unfortunately this poor dog had to be put to sleep. On the whole I believe that we need organisations like the ASPCA to keep in check of these cruel practices, I mean who else is going to do it.....The odds of finding these dogs new homes, where they do not have to be subjected to abuse and chained up all day, where they can be part of an environment of not having to face abuse each day, has to be far better than what they have experienced. Anyone on this site who believes that these dogs "looked okay" and that the ASPCA should not intervene, and one person who also thought that people should not be judged until proven guilty, yes I agree with, but under these circumstances, that is what the VET CSI is there for. To gather evidence and put a case forward. You CANNOT justify that these dogs are in an healthy environment anyone who thinks that these huge chains around anyones neck is dictating a stress free zone. Chained animals only breeds more Stress and more frustration. Boy even out own prisoners get treated better than these dogs. I am glad for the work of the ASPCA. I am glad that these people are their for them. I applaud ASPCA for their Brave work. As much as I love animals and I feel I do my best with my own back garden Deer, the Raccoons, Stray cats and my own cats, and the little possum that comes by now and again for some dog biscuits, all the birds and squirrels and of course not forgetting the two foxes that my husband and I enjoyed for four years before they died last year from distemper. Which tore us apart. We love and respect them, I feel very bewildered how other people do not do the same.

First off MR SMITH needs to get some glasses and a heart. DOGS DESERVE BETTER THAN LIFE ON A CHAIN OR IN A PEN!! (check out the website) Clear and simple. Dogs are pack animals and NEED to be with a pack whether it's other animals or people. I bet their water was nasty and green, flies all over them and who knows about the food. They should put those who love to watch and join in dog or any animal fighting in a pool of water with no sides and let the crocks loose to just chew their heartless bodies up!! Simple as that. Then lets see how they like the "eye for an eye"

I own 3 pit bulls all great dogs. All adopted from an animal shelter. I volunteer my time and money and love dogs especially pit bulls. They are very loyal and loving dog toward humans. To actually get them to fight it takes training them to fight. All dogs will get into a scrap regardless of the breed but when pit bulls are placed in a pit after training them to fight this is an entirely different thing and type of fight. Dog fighting occurs all over the country and world unfortunately. That is why there are plenty of people in hell. Yes God does send people to hell... I doubt though he has ever sent one animal there because they obey his will. As far as the scum that had the dogs I hope you get a nice long prison sentance and do burn in hell. Maybe God can forgive you but I certainly never will. There are many repsonsible pit bull owners in the country. They hardly ever make the news. I make it a point to have my dogs under control and trained. No they dont do tricks but they walk well on a leash, dont rush the front door and stop doing some thing if I tell them to. With out organizations like the ASPCA these animals would have no voice.. Good work ASPCA

The dogs looked like they were in good health and had a good disposition about them. I saw one dog that looked unhealthy. However what impressed me was the fact that these dogs probably had very little human socialization and yet of none of the dogs acted vicious. All were wagging their tails, happy to be petted. Tears came to my eyes when I saw the brownish black one being examined and all of his scars from dog fighting. He looked to be a sweetheart. Poor baby.

Do you people really believe the ASPCA is doing a good deed by so called "rescuing" these dogs? Rescuing them from what? The dogs looked to be in excellent health except for the one dog. Yard accidents happen with performance breeds, it's their nature. Nobody forces a pitbull to battle, it's called instinct and over one hundred years of being bred for gameness. Sure, you're bound to have a few accidents with this type of breed. i do not agree with drug usage (if that much is true) and I'm not calling these folks a saint either but you won't hear me say "poor dogs" because by the looks of that video, they were in better shape than most of you ASPCA lover's dogs. What most people think is a healthy dog is usually 20 lbs overweight. They will surely be put down. Most of you people responding have been brainwashed and manipulated by the media and these AR groups. I'm sure you guys will sleep all cozy at night knowing these "fighting dogs" are being put down by the very ones that are "rescuing" them. Who's the REAL monsters here?

Michael V..and I am sure not Vick you are so right. Any type of breed specific legislation should be fought anywhere in the U.S. Laws should be directed to the people who use animals for gambling entertainment since they are the ones that cause all legitimate dog owners to suffer. It took the Michael Vick case to finally get laws passed in Georgia, however weak they are, regarding humane treatment of dogs. I cannot get homeowners insurance with one company because my rescue dog is part doberman...other half lab. She is 7 years old. Go figure! That is an AARP insurance plan.

I am a little concerned that a number of people here are assuming that ALL of these animals will be destroyed: not necessarily. I'm fairly sure with the SPCA involved there will be a triage evaluation to determine which animals can be rescued, retrained and adopted out and which ones may be either too ill or have developed behavioral problems related to abuse. There are a number of National organizations capable of stepping in and assisting the SPCA relative to the more difficult cases, if needed. There are even organizations of "last resort" capable of handling the sickest dogs or the ones with more borderline behavioral problems. If you watch the National Geographic Channel or Animal Planet Channel you will have an idea who they are - I mentioned one in my previous post and there are others, many of the 40 Michael Vick dogs escaped euthanasia and were retrained and adopted. Others found themselves with organizations capable of letting them live out there lives on site. Sadly, there were a number of Vick dogs (either due to bleak medical futures or behavioral problems relating to their abuse) euthanized, but thanks to the ASPCA the abuse was identified, stopped and many more were saved and many rehabilitated. This this why the ASPCA (national and local) deserve our support.

Thank God for the ASPCA I have a pit bull and she is my baby. I have had her since is was 4 weeks old and she is now 5years old. She is so smart and loves me and my grandkids. She is very gentle. I can not understand how any human being could treat any animal with such cruelty. All animals want is LOVE and give LOVE. My heart breaks when I see such cruelty

Yeah, Jessica, i'd say you missed a lot! If you think this is the proper way to care for animals then you shouldn't have animals. It is difficult to tell everything we would like from a personal video like that's true but it doesn't take much to realize that this is not a good situation. Your judgement of the raid and people involved is harsh and uneducated. These people have most likely been monitoring this "situation" for a long time and these are highly educated and experienced people who know what they are doing and what they are looking for. The dog with the "limp", was so obviously not just in another fight with a dog and even if that were the case, where is the medical care for this injured animal? If you care to look harder at the animal, you will notice old wounds and improperly healed injuries, not to mention the complete lack of body mass. This is a starving dog that they were most likely letting die because it was of no real use to them anymore. Or, it was a "bait" dog. This animal does not belong to a loving home and does not receive proper medical attention and that right there is abuse. Pet owners have an obligation when they take home a pet, to take proper care of it and that means food and clean water daily, proper shelter and proper medical treatment when needed. You don't leave your animals chained to posts in a yard that is unclean and certainly not with a chain the size of dog itself. If these animals were simply pets, this is not how they would live their lives. We can't tell by the video how far they were from the main house, what the area smells like, what type of other animals might be around, what the dog houses are actually like inside or if they are even insulated or weather-proof and the water dishes you see, I can't even tell if there is water or food in them and if there is, if it is clean. I admit that this does not look as bad as some scenes I have seen but I also know that these investigators and volunteers truly love animals and are highly trained for situations such as these and they know what they are looking for. I firmly believe they did not make a snap decision in this case and that all of their actions were well planned and educated. Without agencies such as the ASPCA, animals would have no voice, no rights and no one to stand up for them when they are wronged. Please don't judge too harshly when you just can't know everything it took to get to this point. Dog fighting is a horrible, brutal, sick "sport" that needs to be brought down once and for all. It is not only about the animals, it's also about the drugs, violence, gang activity and I don't even know what else. I do know though, there is nothing about it that is okay and I also have faith that the people who expose dog fighting know what they are talking about.

Thank God for the ASPCA. This dog fighting is happening more often then one might think. I always report any animal that looks like they might be abused in my own neighborhood. They do feel pain and agony. I don't have any use for any human being that is abusive to animals. If you don't like them then don't take one home with you. It is just that simple! It has always broken my heart the way people love puppies and then when they get older, or poop too much, they they are ignored or forgotten, abused and mistreated. Not caring for an animal that you took the responsibility for should in itself be a crime. I get so angry when I see things like this.

We the people can make a differance. We just have to pull together and make each state have laws to help these animals. We can be the voice and say no more will we alow our states to allow this to go on. You all do a great job god bless each and everyone of you in your job . Lets make a change and tell our peoople in Washington to change these laws and treat these owners as they treated the dog. There has to be justice this is so abusive and it breaks my heart how these people just treat these animals. Thank You all for your work and I continue to support you in every way that i can. Yeah this is horrific...Its so hard to understand how someone could do this to an animal they claim to love. I have a male Red Nose Pit who is not spayed (by my choice) and yet I refuse to breed him out of respect for him and the breed. I refuse to feed into this inhumane act.... So to all you Pitbull lovers reading this, stop breeding please. Tho you may not sell your puppies to a fighter, the odds are good that 1 or 2 of their puppies will be bred for that specific reason and so on down the line. Hence making you almost as guilty as the dog fighter him/herself...I mean do ppl really go and check up on a Pit puppy they sold or gave away a few month down the line....NO, they dont!!! So instead of fighting the ban they are trying to enforce to get rid of the breed and helping to put Pits in the fight ring, a simple solution would be to stop breeding your Pits... Before N E 1 gets angry or spazzes, its kinda common sense that even those who breed innocently unknowenly still help feed that of the PitBull Fighting Rings. Maybe that is the law that should be passed...Licensed Pit Bull Breeders and those who are caught breeding "black market" shall suffer the same fines as a dog fighter would... And to those of you reading this who do fight Pits...your a sad excuse for a humane being and you will be caught. I dont wish suffering on any humane and my wish is that all who fight their Pits that they actually turn on you and tear you up so you feel the pain you put your so called beloved pet thru... judgement day is coming and you will feel that pain anyways...NOW THAT I WOULD PAY TO SEE!!!

Great work, ASPCA!! Hopefully some day soon this low-down, cruel, sick activity will be eradicated forever. We lived on a dead-end road in rural TN for 11 years and a emaciated pit bull was dropped off by our house one night - I named her Angel and I will never forget her. She looked much worse than the dogs in this video, but I can see the misery on their faces, too.

Many thanks to the ASPCA for saving these beautiful animals! What horrible abuse and cruelty they must have endured, yet they are wagging their tails and grateful to rescuers. Animals do not give up on us as easy as humans give up on them. Humans need to learn to take responsibility for their pets and to be good caregivers, otherwise they have no business having animals-period.

Forcing these noble animals to fight each other for the amusement of humans is terribly wrong! If their keepers enjoy fighting and bloodshed, why don't they just fight each other? (Because they are cowards!) And you know, the sad thing is, if the dogs were watching humans fight, they would try to stop them. I hope the authorities charge those human b*st*rds to the fullest extend of the law and find these poor dogs the loving homes they deserve. Thanks ASPCA, for saving them!

Please note most rescues from ASPCA have been in "Conservative" states in the south, west and mid-west. It just sickens me that people can be so cruel. I hope the low life scum(s) of the earth are prosecuted to the fullest extent. It tells you what kind of people they are when people do things such as this. These dogs deserve better and I hope and pray that someone will give them that chance. The dogs looked like all they wanted was some attention. Their tails were wagging and people were able to show them affection. Thanks ASPCA for all your hard work. I hope the work continues with helping the dogs find loving homes instead of being put down. If you ask me I think the people who did this need to be tied up with chains and be required to pull weights as they chase chickens. Then... I think they need to put them in a room to where they have no choice but to fight to the point that they are injured and then be put back on chains to starve without any medical treatment just like they did with the animals. I would like to be the person to be in the room beating the crap out of those low lifes. Trust me.... I would do a really good job!

I'm so grateful that the ASPCA and other organizations exist to help these poor animals. These babies were so glad to see people - totally different from the impression many people have of pitbulls. I agree with many of the comments above - the people who inflict this type of suffering on another living creature should have to experience pain and suffering similar to what they've caused. If that were the penalty, maybe some of it would stop. Again, thanks ASPCA.

I have rescued many animals, a recent 4 month Saint Barnard, who is so timid, to even eat it is so sad. But she is coming along slowly. I loathe people any more, love animals more! Tougher laws would prevent so much from happening to these beautiful animals!

  • Submitted by J at:June 6, 2009 12:00 AM

The dog @ 1:16 seems sadly unaccustomed to human comfort. Dogs can socialize & play for their exercise, rather than chase some poor bird on a carousel. That just teaches the dog to fixate on its "prey" & ignore physical discomfort, the very bully-trait abusers want to exploit. Everyone knows chaining dogs makes them more aggressive. Chaining REMOVES the defensive option of running-away when the dog feels threatened & FORCES aggression as it's only means of defense since it can't escape a threat. Some of the nicest dogs at shelters(not just pits) have strong anti-dog dispositions &/or a high prey-drive (as many terriers do). You have to pick the correct environment for them (i.e, no other dogs or no cats, etc.) Being chained-up morning, noon & night is no life for an animal even if it's not being "fought". This looks like the back-yard of someone who has dogs for all the wrong reasons.

I hope these people are prosecuted to the fullest extent. Animal cruelty should be a felony in ALL states with stiff jail time, not just a couple of years. Pleople who will abuse an animal have no problem moving on to abusing a human being. It has been proven in many court cases. Animals can feel pain just like a human and have emotions just like a humane, then why don't they get the same justice as a humane?? We have to be their voice and keep fighting for them, until one day the justice system finally realizes what a great injustice they have bestowed on so many animals for so many years. It is pathetic that we allow someone to line their pockets with money in what they call a sport and the justice system turns their heads. Keep up the good work ASPCA and continue being their voice.

This is why dog fighting has been made illegal. The power people take over these dogs to make them do horrible things is a reflection of the people doing it, not the dogs. Every congressman, politician, attorney and judge needs to see videos like this every day to get it through to them that these people are very sick people and need to be dealt with by severly punishing these people. If there were no animals for these people to treat like this, they would turn to people. This society needs to be ridden of people like this. Jail time is not enough punishment, I say publicly hang them and be rid of them.

I am always appalled at this type of human "behavior", and am also saddened that the dogs, in these instances, have more intelligence than their captors. These people, along with the owners of puppy mills, should have to live under the same conditions as their victims.. Live in small cages with wire bottoms, and have fecal matter and urine rain down on them from above. Or, better yet, be tied and forced into cages where they have to fight to the Death. I am only happy that I am a proud ASPCA member, and someone cares about these poor, loving animals, and will stand up for Their Rights!! Keep up the Super Work, ASPCA!!

Thank you ASPCA for caring and doing what you can to save and protect animals!! I don't know how people can be so cruel. But then humans are the only animals that kill for sport instead of survival. I think their sentence should be living under the same condition these dogs were forced to but not for a mere month. There were 45 dogs so the sentence should be at least one year or more!! From what I've read sleaze-bags like these two don't get much more than a slap on the wrist before they are turned loose again!

To Ramona, I am a proud Liberal Democrat, and have been a proud member of ASPCA since before the Clinton dynasty. I, however, do not think that saving animals should follow party lines, as some Conservatives probably would. I only look out for the needs of the poor and less fortunate. That would include most domesticated and wild animals in our culture, along with a few Right-Wing Conservatives that love their dog-fighting and guns.. I for one, am a Medical Doctor, and my profession is in saving lives, not extinguishing them.. Kudos to You, ASPCA, and Thank You for all of your Hard Work in rescuing and making a better Life, for the less-fortunate members of our Society. Best Regards, Dr. Jack

I couldn't help notice how the majority of these poor pits/staffs. uniformly responded to the humans with friendly gestures even after obvious abuse, something Nat. Geo.'s "DogTown" special on the 20 Michael Vick dogs they saved also revealed as well except for one or two dogs which did not respond aggressively to the trainers (or other humans) trying to retrain them but froze in fright of humans and wet themselves. Unfortunately, all were somewhat dog aggressive or showed fear of other dogs (thanks to their abusive, gaming training) but uniformly the majority showed this breed's resilience and natural good nature and were trained out of the negative training and became adoptable. As the owner of a beautiful green-eyed 9 month old Red Nose male puppy I rescued from a family who changed their mind about him for some practical reasons (partially San Francisco's draconian and biased breed laws relative to Pits and their relations) and I have to say I've never had a friendlier, loving (all night bed warmer), gregarious pet (to humans and especially to all dogs - even to the ones who turn out not to like him). Fortunately, because mine was a family rescue (grandma gifted grandson with a pup without asking mom and dad and without knowing SF's hard laws) I've raised him since 2 months. The only time this little guy had to wear a muzzle was during his "poop" eating faze when walking hims as a 3 month old pup. At 54 I've had approximately 7 dogs since I was a "puppy," myself (Large Collie, Ger. Shepherd, Shetland Sheepdog, 2 mutts, a rescued Sher-pei/Chow mix, rescued Red Setter/Chow (both rescued during my hospice nursing work). This little/big red nose puppy IS the best behaved, loving and happiest dog I've ever owned. I'm not saying all of this to brag on my Red Nose pup, I'm saying it to establish a lifelong familiarity raising and keeping dogs. I can honestly say that this pup does not lunge, bite, growl at people or dogs - some of which many other dogs have done to him. Until this puppy I've never owned a Pit or Pit relative so from my own current and long time dog owning experience I cannot understand the bias or cruelty (and unfair breed specific laws, like here in SF) aimed at these animals. I've been bitten twice as a kid: both by small "safe" dogs like a miniature poodle and a chihuahua. Knowing what I now know about this breed and viewing this video it sickens me that the naturally loyal animals are targeted by subhumans for gaming purposes and THEN punished for force-learned bad behavior by breed specific laws and media hysteria. Historically we know that dogs were probably the earliest animals humans domesticated. It is so obvious in the way they can "read" our needs and be trained to assist the disabled. Chimps may be closer genetically but they can tear you face off in an instant. Give me my red nose any day to be arounf my grand kids. Dogs have protected human communities in the wild for millenia, assist the disabled, find humans in emergencies so maybe INSTEAD of punishing the animal maybe the gamers and their associates (as already mentioned) should be facing felony time for abuse, because by extension they do create a possible attack on humans. These sick ****s "feed" small breed dogs to game dogs as bait so is it any wonder they may mistake a small child (god forbid and I am not immune to a parent's pain relative to a dog attack on a child) as bait. And I believe other dog breeds top the list for child attacks above pits: where are THOSE breed specific laws and hysterical media reporting? Unfortunately, the "they are just dogs" regarding criminal punishment and sentencing of the abusers and gamers still trumps thoughtful legislation. Even in a so-called progressively political city like SF we've created some of the most ill-informed and draconian breed specific laws in the country, though we are more likely to prosecute the owners in a dog attack the City is more likely to go after a Pit/Staff. owner than and offending Lab. Sadly, when Michael Vick was released there was a very heated billboard on which at least 50% plus who were pro-Vick couldn't even comprehend the notion of animal cruelty like hanging a live animal. It was all very depressing as is this news. The ASPCA has its work cut out unfortunately and they definitely need our support. Michael SF

I notice the name and address of this person was not revealed. I think this information should be made public knowledge as are child offenders. In my opinion, anyone who could cause harm to a helpless animal has psychological problems and their neighbors should be warned. Perhaps the embarrassment felt by the offender's families might put additional pressure on these low lifes.

I don't know what animal owners are thinking , but if they need money then they should GET A JOB. Dog fights aren't gonna do anything for them except by getting your pet dead and going to jail. And F.Y.I. going to jail isn't gonna get you a very good job wise guys!

I live in a small rural town in Georgia. I know this sort of event takes place and I have tried to intervene. Trying to involve local law officials is not easy. It seems so many people have attitudes of "oh well." Well, it means something to me. I feed starving animals, help find homes for mistreated pets, and care too much. Laws needs to be made in every state and more harsh punishments need to be given. A slap on the wrist is nothing compared to the anguish and pain these animals endure, and yes they continue to love people unconditionally. Some people need to take heart from these animals and see the humanity.....

Wake up people!! This is just another example of how our laws and morals have been twisted by "liberal" (it's my right to do what I want with my animals) scum. Anyone with a conscience knows that this is wrong and there should not be any question about a law against this practice. I wonder if those who find no problem with animal abuse would find it acceptable if children were housed in such conditions or if convicted criminals (murderes rapist etc) were kept under the same detention?? See what I mean?? I can't understand what sick minded pos could do this. Can you say Michael Vick??

It is very cruel and hurtful in my eyes how anyone can treat any animals like this. In this world everyone should do more to protect animals from abuse human as owners and should spend a long time in jail. Not every animal isn,t a fighting dog if you treat and care and love for the dog it,s the human that wants to make these dogs fight and it isn,t far to these dogs they aren,t having a life. I love animals and I,ll try to support to stop the cruel and abuse going on it breaks my heart.

For the love of god I will never understand how a human being can treat an animal in this manner. It makes me so sick to my stomach to see these poor dogs being treated the way they are. Take every one involved with this "sick" crime and put them behind bars with little food and water, put a heavy chain around their neck and let them experience what the poor dogs have been experiencing. It's very disturbing that in this day and age, we have human "beasts" instead of human beings in this world. I have been a guardian for the ASPCA since January of `08 and I would like to personally thank all the wonderful people who work for the ASPCA, and see that even though we have "beasts" in this world, it's great to know we also have beautiful, caring people who live their lives helping animals escape these horrors. Thank You. "We are their voice".

I belive that when these people ( or whatever they are)are brought foward to do there jail time, that it should not ne in a nice cell- but tied to a heavy chain, no clothes, very little food and no water . then made to fight just like the dogs have too, and only one comes out, or when they are malled to leave them again chained to a heavy chain with no help. No little jail terms either.Give them lots of time to think how cruel they have been. But you will have less repeat offenders.

I really don't know why this is about anything political, liberal vs conservative, Reublican vs Democrat in these posts. It is about the animals!!! There are too many animls abused like this out there, and I applaud the person who had the guts to call it in the the authorities. Kudos to them!! I have a chain that is a bit smaller than the ones that was on the dogs in the video - We use it to hull trees! My dogs (70lb Rottie, and a 4 mo old BC) just get a rope leash, and that's only when I am not out with them, otherwise, we run wild on our land. What was going on ther is just wrong, in so many ways!!! Those dogs were so happy it seemed to have someone just come and get them away from there. Unfortunately, if these dogs can't be re-trained they end up being put down. that is the part that upsets me the mot. People make these dogs mean, and because the dogs are mean people can't have them so people kill them. The senences need to be a lot bigger for breeding and fighting dogs. Puppy mills are no better than fighting mills! we have to be their voice, because a bunch of barking in Congress (Well that is all that happens ther but..) is not going to tell them what is right for these animals. And I will pu in my own political thing - Mr. President should have gotten a shelter dog!!!!

I hope for all punishment too these cowards and all cowards that cause any animal abuse, not only for this last scene of heart break but all. I don't blame a "race" for his terrible beginning. I blame ignorance and people turning a blind eye when they could have reported the abusers. There should be laws that restrict pet ownership when there has been a history of abuse. And, spay/neuter education should start in our schools. "A little less talk, and a lot more action." What a bunch of hypocrites!!! For all of you people on here that are so sad about these dogs and the way animals are treated, I am curious as to how many of you eat meat? Have any of you seen the treatment of baby calves or pigs or any other farm raised animal that is slaughtered for your meal. These too are sensitive beings, but because we have defined them as food,it is ok to torture and kill them without even blinking an eye. Want to see real cruelty? Watch a factory farm film on PETA. Until you treat ALL animals with respect, you are no better than these people except you let someone else do your dirty work!! Think about it!

We need stronger laws to prosecute these "dog fighters" and to punish them to the fullest extent of the law instead of punishing the pit bulls that were exploited and abused by euthanizing them. Most of the dogs in this video appeared friendly towards the people trying to help them. Hopefully the ASPCA will find loving homes that these animals so desperately deserve. Also, I think the people who pay to watch these dog fights also should be charged in aiding and abetting dog fighting!

  • Submitted by Mary in Greenville at:June 5, 2009 12:00 AM

I agree w/Deb in MI. Dogs are not meant to have a life of being tied by heavy chains, living a solitary life in the woods. Anyone who is a reputable and responsible dog owner or breeder would never leave dogs hidden in the woods and tied apart on huge and heavy chains and living in barrels. There can be no other reason to have them hidden there. Also, if you have ever watched animal planet, you would know that the animal cops that raid dog-fighting homes or facilities to confiscate these dogs, see that these dogs are usually sweet, gentle and after human affection and love. That's the biggest tragedy of all. They are only aggressive to OTHER dogs - BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THESE MEN HAVE TRAINED THEM TO DO, IT'S ALL THEY KNOW!!! These dogs are not born fighters, they are trained and subjected to these things to the point that they are actually fighting for their very lives. The severely injured dog was probably the "baiting" dog, the dog that they use to build up the other dog’s confidence so they will fight harder. Oh, and by the way, (Submitted by Cortez916 at: June 5, 2009.) Deb is right you are ignorant, but I will go steps further; you are not only ignorant; you are are obviously illiterate and uneducated, you can't spell and have no grammar skills what-so-ever.

  • Submitted by Megan at:June 5, 2009 12:00 AM

I'd like to comment on the people saying the dogs are just going to be put down. Unfortunately, that is what happens to fighting dogs if they are not able to be rehabilitated. They have been trained to be aggressive and sometimes it's not possible to turn them around. But would you rather they stay living on a heavy chain in the middle of the woods, forced to fight against their own will in order to amuse their sick-minded owners? It's a shame that euthanasia often times is the end result, but it's the owner's fault for turning the dogs into fighting machines, not the ASPCA's fault for having to make the hard decision of what to do with the dogs after they step in and save them from their sad existence. It does seem unfair, but unless there are enough people out there who are willing to take in a fighting dog and are able to keep it isolated from other animals for the rest of its life, then there's really no other choice than to put the dog down. It's a lose/lose situation for the dogs which is why dog fighting is so sad.

The issue here is that dog-fighting is inhumane and cruel. Please don't attack one another, put that energy into volunteering and financially supporting your local ASPCA, Humane Society, Dog Rescues, or Animal Control facility. If you cannot donate your time, at least donate monetarily - even if it is only $5, every little bit adds up. Write your state legislature, advocate the humane treatment of ALL animals; support bills that severly punish animal abusers; puppy mill owners; dog fighting facilities and their owners, including the people that support it by showing up and paying money to watch dogs fight. (or any animal used for fighting purposes. )

I applaud and support your efforts -- and agree with other comments that severe consequences are necessary and warranted, e.g., long incarceration and high monetary fines that continue in effect if the perpetrator is released -- and life-sentences are not unreasonable in my view because they, and their paying spectators, have inflicted pain and death for profit and perverse pleasure, not something a civil society should tolerate or risk a repetition. (Research links torture of animals to an equal disregard for human well-being.) The Vick case penalties were entirely too light to be an effective deterrent or example to others. An effective deterrent must be certain and swift. It must remove all profit motive, must include spectators as well as organizers, must signal clear and lasting societal rejection, and must remove opportunity to repeat the offense. Proof of lasting "rehabilitation" and ongoing compensation must be equally demanding before granting readmission to incremental levels of societal trust. Beyond severe, certain, and meaningful life-consequences, we need to redouble prevention efforts to create a culture where awareness and consciousness-raising are part of everyone's education from cradle to grave. We cannot "get it right" for people until we first "get it right" for animals who are even more dependent on people for love and care.

All of these angelic dogs more than deserve another chance or two at least. As for the owners of this dog fighting ring shame on them, all I can say is I can only pray the judge puts it to em' and they get the maximum sentencing, they should also be put outside chained to something and used as BAIT and let the dogs rip them apart. I just cannot comprehend how any moral human being can be this inhumane to any creature, I wish at least in the southern states too which yes, this is a real problem even in our local areas here in Virginia that they would ban anyone from having an unspayed/unneutered pit bull and if they do they should have to take the dog for regular 6 month checkups to identify if signs of dog fighting on the dogs and if so, then you can start investigating and busting these cruel, inhumane, satanic beasts and in my opinion they shouldn't be allowed to go to jail, they need an immediate death row sentence... Dog fighting is all too common everywhere you look now and our laws need to be changed to reinforce no more dog fighting or breeding for this purpose, it's very cruel and inhumane. I hope these responsible owners of all this rot in hell.

I have been an advocate for these helpless creatures basically my whole life. I teach in a rural area and make sure to recognize the month of April which is National Prevention of the Cruelty of Animals month. I've seen firsthand what this type of cruelty can do to otherwise well behaved animals. I have had American Pits myself which I raised from birth to be loving, playful, and just like any other breed. We need to do more with getting the word out to the public on how to spot suspicious land owners who may have a tie to puppy mills, dog fighting, and/or who are being cruel to animals! Thank you ASPCA for helping fight for these beautiful creatures who otherwise would not have a voice!

The sad thing is these dog fighting rings are ALL over the country & the humane officers have so much work & it is I am sure physically & moreso emotionally exhausting! What needs to be done is every single one of us in our own little communities in OUR state need to go to the state representatives & see what laws they have concerning dog fighting! And if they don't have any, get on the ball and help change the laws! It starts with us; 'the little' people! If you think you could never have one of these rings in your town, open your eyes AMERICA......they are everywhere. Every single person involved in helping these animals and prosecuting the ignorant are angels, whether they are with the ASPCA or just a little shelter that takes the abused in!

This is so horrible.Watching this just makes me sick to my stomach. People that think it is ok to fight animals need to be punished.I don't mean slapped on the hand I mean severly punished. I would be glad to start off the punishment too. These dogs just want to be loved by a human. How hard is that? I work with a local animal rescue where I live and we have lots of pits. We have one that was in a fighting ring and one of our fosters decided to keep her. She is now a therapy dog and she is so loving. Thank you ASPCA for all you do, and to all the people who help out. I myself am a monthly contributor.

These "animal cruelty" acts are simply sickening. What kind of a person does it take to ENJOY seeing animals hurt and abused? The law needs to toughen up on these people...too many slaps on the wrist. An operation of this magnitude should face SERIOUS CRIMINAL CHARGES. I think they should face no LESS than 10 yrs behind bars. And a bond set no LESS than $500.000.00. It has GOT to be stiff enough that they would never want to risk involvement in it. It's not like we are talking about DECENT HUMAN BEINGS HERE...anyone that could abuse an animal...I have no feelings or concern for their well beings. I say MAKE THEM PAY...!!! LAWS HAVE GOT TO GET TOUGHER to ever STOP this horrible inhuman treatment on animals. Thank GOD for ASPCA...I have more respect for you than you will EVER KNOW! Thank you for once again, for rescuing yet more animals in need!

Thank You ASPCA for helping all the helpless animals that are abused by the sick minded that call themselves humans. There is no excuse for this abuse they need to suffer as much as their victims did! Now we to stop the fur trade and all the suffering that is happing there it is more horrifying then you can imagine. Animals being skinned alive. Watch and see PETA's video if you can stand the horror. All I could do was cry and scream at the screen and know that these people can't be human. SAY NO TO FUR OF ANY KIND!

First of all to "get your facts straight" - you must be a relative of one of these guys, or you're into dog fighting yourself. You think these dogs look like they had a stable home? You are nuts! Second for all these dogs have been through, they were still wagging their tails and happy to see their rescuers. I believe they knew these people were coming to help them out. God bless all of you for helping these poor dogs. I hope they can all be rehabilitated and find good homes and be treated the way they should be. To Courtney - good for you. I hope you do pursue a career with animals. You sound like you really love them! what ever lisa

I feel for these dogs because they aren't at fault. like everyone has already said, I hope the owners get prosecuted to the extent of the law and I think it's time to make harder punishments. Too bad the SPCA in Houston doesn't take pitbulls, i've taken a couple I found on street and they always tell me they're gonna put them down if no one claims them in 5 days. :[ I always find them a different home.

This kind of stuff breaks my heart to watch. I own three rescue dogs - all American pitbulls. Each has their own story - one was neglected, the other came from a broken up puppy mill where she never even saw the light of day until it was raided, and the other was used as a bait dog in a dog fighting ring until she was about 6 months old. People look at me sometimes like I am nuts, but they are all great dogs, and I pray that people begin to realize that it's the person who makes the dog what it is. They truley just want to please their owner. These dogs are the best thing to happen to my life and I can't even fathom how anyone can put any animal through that kind of abuse. It takes a real selfish, heartless, and souless person to take part in dog fighting. I thank god everyday that there are people out there like the ASPCA who care enough to go out there and break these dog rings up. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone at ASPCA who cares about pitbulls and fights to make a diffrence for them. -Katie and my dogs Rocky, Lexi, & Cami.

Where to begin?. Stiffer punishment for these ignorant pieces of poo. I think Ray has a good idea. All those prosecuted must fight to the death. Let them be tied outside and wait for the next guy. But our society would never allow that - they have rights. Baloney. When you travel down the path such as this disgusting one (lets remember the horrible existance of the Greyhound they need more press) - dog fighting, child abuse- YOU LOOSE ALL RIGHTS. Please spare me the they are people crap. REAL people would NEVER ENTERTAIN doing this. Thank you to ASPCA and all the groups that help solve these crimes. HEAVIER PUNISHMENT, LONGER JAIL TIMES (20+) AND MAKE IT EASIER TO PROSECUTE. These pieces of crap only deserve the same existance they have forced upon innocent defenseless animals. They make me sick and I pray they die a slow painful death. Yes can you tell I hate those type of people.

People who engage in this horrific blood sport don't deserve to live in a free society. If I would have a say in their fate, I'd lock them up for good! I hope and pray that they won't put all of these dogs down. They deserve a chance to be rehabed. Afterall, they didn't choose to be fighting dogs--they were bullied into it by human scum!

When is our judicial system going to set punishments that fit the crime? These and all criminals deserve to have the same treatment done to them as they did to their victims. We all need to contact our State Representatives and Federal government to let them know we are sick of the criminals getting away with murder and the victims having no justice for the crime committed against them. If the laws are not changed we are fighting a loosing battle. As soon as they close one dog fighting ring down another one opens. The punishment is just not strong enough.

There are not words to describe how I feel about these people. I feel there is no place on earth for people that hurt animals, they were given to us by God to love and enjoy. They give unconditional love, how many people do you know that has such a spiritual quality? I've had pitbulls, they have so much love to give and are wonderful animals. Why should the law treat this any different than if these people had of done such a horrible thing to another person? This breaks my heart to know what will happen in the end for these loving babies. If the law doesn't put them in prison for life it is falling down on its duties. No matter what the law does or doesn't do these along with the others that do such cruel things to animals will one day have to answer to God. Wonder what kind of excuse they will try to tell HIM for their actions?

To "Submitted by confused at: June 5, 2009": Maybe these dogs weren't cowering, but that doesn't mean that they weren't abused. Dog fighting IS abuse and TORTURE, especially to the dogs that don’t win. Maybe you think this is an "a-s" attack, too! Maybe they did feed some of them well, they were at least lucky in that respect. Some of them weren’t as healthy, probably because they weren’t the “winners”, which is why they were in poor condition; these are the dogs that aren’t treated as well. This type of animal abuse NEEDS to be “dramatized.” It is complacent and de-sensitized people like you with no compassion or empathy that fight dogs, and only see “healthy”, not “cowering” dogs. Whether you see it or not, true responsible and loving pet owners would not have dogs tied out in the middle of no-where! Their "babies" would live in the house with them, right where they were meant to be. Everyone knows that dogs are "pack" animals and whether they live in the house with their "Moms & Dads" and other pet-baby siblings or live in a household in which they are the only baby. THIS is the right life for them, not living in the woods tied on chains. If you were a true dog lover and owner, you would have recognized the tragedy, too.

I adopted my foster pit bull Precious that I rescued from Indiana shelter, ultimately she was unadoptable because she is a pit bull so I decided to keep her. It's unfortunate what people don't realize that is that this breed is very sweet, intelligent and loving. She is my girl and she is great with people, dogs and kids. It's dispicable that "human beings" could take the trust and loyalty of these animals and so brutally violate it. I personally think that people or poor excuse of such who dare abuse animals are walking a very thin line between domestic violance, child abuse and very violant crimes against less fortunate or defenseless others. I sure hope that our judicial system sees this connection and does something about it, because so far unfortunately these criminals have been walking away from this with a slap on the wrist. I sure hope that these dogs will have a 2nd chance and recover from this abuse and neglect. Thank you ASPCA for all your efforts and hard work. I'm sure you are angels to these dogs and my other, such as you are to me.

God bless you for what you do! As I watched the video, I noticed that the dogs were all wagging their tails. I wish that people would realize that pitbulls are not the savage animals that they are said to be - it's humans that make them make them fight. Keep up the great work - maybe with the help of laws being passed making dog fighting a felony with large fines and long jail sentences, this can be eliminated.

God Bless the ASPCA!!!!

I do hope ALL of the dogs, including the injured ones, will have a chance to heal and be adopted by QUALIFIED caregivers. They deserve the best, to make up for the horrendous behavior of the SICK humans? who fought them. But DON'T FORGET, these two men may be prosecuted but there are numerous other spectators who participate in this bloody sickness - whether for gambling purposes or satifaction of a cruel streak.

I am worried that this type of abuse will not be stopped with may states cutting back on services. In Florida, yesterday one of the counties said they were going to eliminate the animal control dept. and it would be up to the police to go after the abusers, and to get help for the animal.

My heart actually hurts when I see pictures like this. Cruelty to innocent animals is a sin. They are God's creatures, and deserve respect, love, affection, and PROTECTION. The law should deal with these offenders as harshly as they do with humans who torture, beat and kill other HUMANS. Dogfighting has got to be stopped. Looking at the sad eyes of the dogs on the video makes me unbearably sad. Dogs are so much nicer than some humans.

  • Submitted by Pat at:June 5, 2009 12:00 AM

I watched the video and it is very disturbing to see the way those dogs were treated. I'm sure ASPCA has come across worse. These people involved in this should be put behind bars (prison) for the rest of there lives and be treated the same way they treated these animals.

  • Submitted by Nancy from NorthCarolina at:June 5, 2009 12:00 AM

I am originally from NJ where there is dog fighting but it seems to be somewhat confined to the the cities. I've worked for a veterinarian there for 20yrs and was so proud of my boss when a fighting dog came in for treatment (which is rare) and he insisted the client sign the dog over to us or the police will be called immediately. The client did sign over the pregnant bitch and we were able to save two of her pups but the rest were dead & rotting inside her. The police were called anyway. It took a lot of nerve to do what the Dr. did but he earned great respect of his whole staff. The two saved pups were taken by one of the techs and we did rehabilitate the bitch and find her a very good home after quite a bit of trust building. I see in the South animals are treated like garbage. They are for the most part not even vaccinated, spayed/neutered or provided with adequate care, food & shelter. It is also so much more rural that these atrosities, many times, go unseen. It's time for people to speak up about neighbors and aquaintenances if they suspect animal neglect or abuse. It takes a village for Animals too!

I work in the media and am an avid supporter of the aspca as well as have numerous pit rescues of my own. These people deserve to be thrown in a pit amongst each other and forced to fight to the death, just like they do to these poor dogs. And for the weaker ones they will be drowned electrocuted and tortured just like they do to the dogs. That's my feeling, an eye for an eye when it comes to cases like these.

I almost can't watch stuff like this anymore, but it keeps my fires burning. My own dog became a bait dog to aide in these horrible practices when he was taken from our own backyard when I was younger, the day after Christmas no less. I almost want to say eye for an eye, and let them go against one of the dogs they trained, and they can only use their teeth to defend themselves, but they would just do more harm to those beautiful animals. I keep hope that one day dog fighting will not exist. Kharma will deal with these mosnters, and the courts as well. Keep up the good work.

Today is my birthday and this was the best gift I received. To see people get caught for these heinous crimes is great. I totally agree with everything that has been said, but here is another idea...quit breeding the pit bulls or many other animals as that goes. There are soooo many dogs and cats that need homes in shelters. I am trying to place a pit bull (that is in a shelter, so you know his time is limited) and two labradors as we speak. This also goes for horses. When they took aways the slaugter houses, what are we going to do with unwanted horses? Quit breeding!! I think everyone that makes a living at breeding/selling animals should be required to help euthenize pets at the local shelter that are being put to sleep simply because no one wants them. I have placed many unwanted dogs, cats and horses in loving homes and I will not stop as long as there are animals in need. Bottom line, we have got to do something for our animals, thank you ASPCA.

  • Submitted by Teresa at:June 5, 2009 12:00 AM

What is it going to take for the laws to become heavier for these horrific crimes. These are people that do not value animal life and maybe not even human life. In fact, any serial killer will tell you they started out by torturing animals. It's only one step away from disregarding human life. Unless each state legislates stiffer sentences this will continue to go on. These rescue stories are sad and great at the same time, but, they are only the ones the SPCA is lucky to to have found or been tipped off about. There are so many more out there I am sure. Ignorance breeds ignorance.

I have two black pits (one is a mix) but they are the sweetest and most wonderful dogs. It breaks my heart to see people do this to these incredible animals. Pits are so eager to please and that, sadly, is their downfall. It is what makes it so easy for these lowlifes to exploit them. Even after all that has been done by humans to that poor baby w/ the hurt leg, he still has a wag in his tail for the people who come to save him. I kills me that pits have such a bad reputation. They are so sensitive and emotional. There is nothing in the world like a pit bull's smile! I get the pleasure of seeing it every day and I wouldn't have any other kind of dog. Thank you to the people working hard to save these beautiful amazing animals from this horrid life. I sincerely hope the people who did this to these dogs get what they deserve!

  • Submitted by Dog Abusers Make Me Sick!! at:June 5, 2009 12:00 AM

I am a professional positive method dog trainer, formerly Vet Tech, and have worked with dog rescue for 30 years. Anyone who thinks it is ok to tie or chain a dog, let it live in a barrel, or hit it with a stick FOR ANY REASON is a dog abuser. It is sickening, and more sickening is that these men will not suffer any punishment as horrible as that they have dealt these dogs. I too own a Pitbull, and have had them all my life. Yes, some of them have dog agression problems, primarily due to poor breeding, or those who deliberately breed dogs for agression. Either way, it's created by humans, not the dogs, and it's always the dogs, not the humans that suffer for it. These dogs can most certainly be rehabilitated. The problem is that with millions of Pit bulls dying in shelters already, this investment of resources is difficult to justify. Hopefully, as Best Friends did with the worst of the Vick dogs, some rescue will step in to advocate for the victims here, the dogs.

I see time and time again the 'threats' of punishment for animal cruelty end up as some miserly fine, that is not a punishment befitting cruelty, the courts should harden up and send these people to jail or as Jeff says put them on a chain gang with shackels and collars like they have put on those poor defenseless creatures. animal cruelty is inexcusable and disturbing. equally as upsetting are the comments to maim, torture, and kill the offenders. of course their behavior is appalling and punishment is imperative. but must we resort to violence to punish violence? are we no better than the animal abusers if we take delight in their torture and abuse. abusing any living being is wrong-- even if they deserve it.

Let's hope that all those people who try to convince us that "pitbulls are born killers" will look at the attitudes of these dogs. You would expect them to be a lot more difficult to rescue under the circumstances. There is simply no such thing as a "bad breed". I agree with the statements of others here, there is NO punishment too harsh for the idiots who would treat defenseless animals in this manner. I rescued a fighting pitbull. He was thrown out of a moving car in a box in NYC. It was so sad-he was skinny, scared, beat up, but loving! I have small children, so I knew my house wouldn't be the best fit for him, so I started on my quest for the best home for him! I kept him for a couple of weeks - took him to the vet, fattened him up and found a great home at my vet-tech's home. She had a lot of experience with pitbulls and I knew this was his new home! My kids still talk about him and I still cry when I think of him b/c he was so kind & loving even after all the abuse he went through at the hands of people!

It is appalling to know that their are people out there walking the streets that entertain this sort of abuse. How can anyone own an animal and have no respect or love for it? It breaks my heart to know that animals have to endure this sort of abuse and torture everyday. Every time I look at an animal and see this sort of thing going on, I wonder what is going on in their mind. They are man's best friend, yet this is how they get treated. I just never will understand how people can be so evil and so uncaring for one of God's beautiful creatures. They have so much love to give and I don't understand how a person can watch animals kill each other and not have any compassion. It is just beyond belief to me!! I am so thankful for the A.S.P.C.A. and all the animal rescue groups out there today that work everyday to get them out of these situations. I just wish that there were higher charges and a stronger justice system for these people with such warped minds. I mean these animals have feelings just as much as a human, yet these people will only get a fine or six months in jail. What is that going to teach a person? Put them in jail for 10 years or more. I mean these are felony charges and deserve real felony sentences. These people need to pay for destroying and harming God's innocent creatures.

I hope these dogs are not put down. I noticed throughout the entire footage of the video randolph leader provided that none of the dogs seemed overly aggressive if at all aggressive; not even towrds each other since you could see they were out in the open and not spaced that far apart from each other, and usually that's one of the biggest reasons why it would be to hard to try to adopt them out is because they are so dog aggressive they end up needing strictly one on one attention from anyone willing to adopt them and cannot be placed within a home other dogs are already occupying. I know it's not so much that they are people aggressive as dog aggressive, but these dogs really did not look at all threatened by the people sent there to look them over and treat them...in fact they seemed to openly welcome the attention. Ever dog was I saw on this video had their tails wagging when the people were there at the scene...they have a pretty good chance of being able to be sent to shelters for rehabilitation and adoption...

The video also brought tears to my eyes. I am in agreement with the sentiments of the other writers. As a society we need to teach that cruelty to helpless animals or people will not be tolerated. I consider my political party "animal welfare" and vote accordingly. The offense for animal cruelty should be severe enough to deter the crime. In addition education that all living creatures feel pain and suffer but can not speak their anguish might deter the ignorant that still have the human like quality of compassion. For those with no heart, these antisocial scum require severe consequences and deterents to stop them. In some cases they should be behind bars forever.

We've adopted a pit bull (Jordan). I don't believe that he has a fighting background, but he did spend a year at the local shelter. I can honestly say that he's the best dog we've ever had. He's smart, well behaved (not that he's learned his manners, which took the better part of a year), loving, extremely loyal & thankful to have a home. He's great w/ our 5 year old son & gets along w/ our other 2 dogs (Beagle & Westie). Pit Bulls need an image make-over, which starts with educating the public & responsible pet owners. Without both, we're not going to be able to overcome the negative media attention. I still haven't been able to figure out why the media often enjoys picking on them; I guess is just sensational, which they believe will sell. That angers me.

So many of us read about this and our hearts ache and wonder how people can still treat animals with so much cruelty. We are a saddened nation. We are a nation of anger and think nothing of abusing those defenseless to us. This isn't just about animals. . .there are people that do it to their own children. My heart more then breaks. I see those animals in this video and watch them wag their tails. . .with all they have been through they are still willing to trust and search for touch. I wish I had the answer. . .I wish I could make a difference. . .I wish education would make a difference, but every time the ASPCA closes someone down. . .how many are opening up? I'm tired of seeing all the animals for sale in the Pennysaver, in the paper. . .what about all the animals out there WAITING to be adopted and selfish people keep breeding for money with NO regard of the life in their hands. Thank you ASPCA. . .I will keep following, I will keep contributing, but I pray for the day when there are stronger penalties, when people can't breed and sale, when 1000s of animals aren't euthanized just because, when there are NO more in humane conditions for all animals (at the hands of humans).

I can't bring myself to even watch the video because I know I would be very upset and would have a hard time getting this out of my mind. Thank God you found these animals and without looking at the video I hope that somehow these animals were saved and will go to loving homes. I don't have a pit bull but would not hesitate to get one, if I had the room. There are not any bad dogs just bad humans that train them wrong. I pray every day for all of the animals and hope that they can all get homes to be loved and cared for. I wish I had the finances and I would do more. Right now I have all I can handle, with 4 dogs and 4 cats. All are rescues except one that was given to me after I lost my precious girl to cushions desease. Thank you for letting me comment

This makes so sick. I will NEVER be able to understand the mentality of a person who does this type of thing to an animal and enjoys it, nor do I want to. I also don't understand those who watch and bet on it, it is sick and disgusting and sad. Some people have long tried to argue that this horrid thing is a 'sport and a cultural' thing, I get so angry when I hear this ridiculous argument, it is nothing but a disgusting, cruel and vicious act and anyone that participates at all is void of emotion and empathy and has to have SOME sort of tendency towards violence. Dogs are such wonderful animals, they are loyal and their love is honest and unconditional. Pits are wonderful breeds when bred properly and trained properly. These people are giving them drugs and doing all sorts of awful things to them and there they are still waging their tails to their rescuers. I hope that they have a happy ending to their cruel beginnings. God Bless the people that came to the rescue.

Bravo ASPCA. If I saw such doings I would be the FIRST in line to report it. That makes me feel so sadly. Those dogs you saved are thankful as well I am sure. They all seemed so very friendly. I hope they get the best homes with people who will show them love and a sense of comfort. SURELY NOTHING like they experienced in their pasts.

The good people who have taken time to comment have said it all. I will only add to all of you, take more time to contact your lawmakers in your state. You want tougher laws and higher punishment for dog fighters. And more importantly, wheather your Judges are elected or appointed, you have a voice. Attend political meetings, and when it's Q&A time, step up and make the person seeking the judgeship account for their position on punishment for dog fighters. I know from personal experience, there are Judges whose ruling can be maximum punishment or not. A poor Huskey did not get justice from one of our Judges, and paid a greater price because the Judge did not do the right thing. Needless to say, my vote in the next election did not go to that Judge. I now ask the right questions, if don't get the right answer, my vote goes to the candidate who will rule in favor of the victim, not the defendant. Thank you ASPCA, you are wonderful.

As a bully owner, I cannot imagine how anyone could do this to these sweet & loyal dogs! This is the reason many people think these dogs are bad from the start. I have defended my dog's character against many who view bulldogs as violent and aggressive. I have never loved a dog so much as I do my 'Luna Belle'. I am a resident of Alabama and this sickens my very soul. I think it takes a special kind of jerk to promote this kind of cruelty and violence. Kudos to ASPCA, keep up the great work guys!!

I think we should put them in a cage and let them be bitten and see how they like it, jerks!!

Unfortunately the bad guys that do this stuff are not watching this from the ASPCA. I dont believe they are sorry for abusing these animals -ONLY SORRY THAT THEY WERE CAUGHT - I've said it before and now I'll say it again. Humans are terrorist, humans hurt eachother and anything else they can take advantage of for profit. Humans hurt and abuse other creatures for testing. Lets keep the lawyers happy ! As I sit here at this moment with my two dogs I feel only trust and safety with them. They are not thinking how to hurt me or take my earnings. Very few other humans can do that. I'm going to guess most reading this are not the ones I'm writing about...I mean, if your interested in the ASPCA , then maybe there is a chance for ourselves and animals, maybe you are a kind and compassionate person. We need to be kind to eachother and to our friends that share life and the world with us. Obama is not our savior - believe it or not ! Every individual out there is the solution -you make a difference - your actions and efforts make results - "Hope is what we do when we give up and watch what happens" Take action and get off your butt. Take a moment to make the world better -what comes around goes around. With all that said - support the ASPCA , they are taking action to make it a better world !

Thank you, thank you, thank you. We need better laws that reflect the humane treatment of animals in general and tougher laws for those that choose this type of abuse. Ghandi said that "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way it treats its animals." Obviously, we're not living up to this, but now is the time to turn the tide. I am a monthly contributor to the ASPCA and I highly recommend that everyone that reads this do the same. I also host a national radio show and on our website we post action alerts that need our signatures along with grassroots animal groups that need our help. Go to www.conscioustalk.net and click on "Action Page" where you can do your part!

Neither does it surprise me that our so-called lawmakers don't do anything to alleviate the misery of animals that are subjected to human garbage such as the sort that ran this dog-fighting ring. Here, in Pittsburgh, judges and lawyers have actually been observed in attendance at dog fights!

I feel very bad for those dogs and very mad at people that do this. All these dogs after all they been through still wagged their tails and wanted love. Please find them good homes. We would have alot less crime if the punishment for crimes would be the same for the crime. ie.if you murder, you get killed the same way, no waiting in jail, etc. etc. etc. Another thing some people say a human and animal's life is different. IT IS NOT! IF IT CAN FELL PAIN; IT IS A LIFE AND SHOULD BE TREATED THE SAME AS A HUMAN LIFE!

I think it's clear that the majority of us would like to see stricter punishments for those who mistreat any animal. Especially the American Pitbull Terrier. They're are by far one of the most loving and loyal breeds out there. And it is very sad to see how greed and complete insensitivity can cause a human being to mistreat, abuse and neglect all for greed and power. However when we make comments stating how we would like to see people tortured in the same manner as these animals it doesn't exactly reflect well on our behalf. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing more I'd like to see then some of these facilitators to suffer by living in the same conditions. But if we really want to make progress we need to keep our cool and work with people like those at the ASPCA to keep moving forward in order to create more laws that "protect" these animals and of course create stricter consequences for those who abuse and neglect. And as we can see this is happening over time. The ASPCA workers really set a solid example. They're not lashing out on camera with uncontrolled emotion. They're simply taking action, rescuing these animals and immediately going to work in order to help the victimized animals become stronger emotionally, mentally and physically. Thus ultimately allowing these animals to become stable enough to enter a home and have a family or owner that gets them well socialized. We're making headway. So let’s keep our heads up and give a big thanks to the ASPCA for coming through once again and saving the lives of some truly beautiful animals who can now enjoy a happy and healthy life like they deserved from the beginning.

Without stricter laws and higher fees, this kind of criminal activity will continue. I am disgusted and sadened by what these animals have had to endure at the hands of pychopaths. Hasnt it been said that a serial killer starts by abusing animals? Geez! I believe the sick people that do this should not only get prison time but also be required to pay money to the SPCA or any other organization that cares for these dogs for the remainder of the dogs lives.

I am not surprised at the cruelty practiced by people like these. What I can NOT ubderstand is the Courts taking too long to prosecute, which results in "justice delayed is justice denied" (or at lesast watered down). Once they are caught and stopped, they should be prosecuted as soon as they are arraigned and the penalty should be commensurate with the crime. No more slap on the wrist, no more probation, no more chasing out of the jurisdiction. They should serve their appropriately heavy penalty for what they do where they committed the crime. That way, they can not set up shop in another county or state.

I can't believe the inhumanity of all of this. Those dogs just melt from the gentle touch they are receiving from the people that rescued them. You can just see how deprived of human kindness they have been. I hope they do not have to suffer the fate of being put down, as you can see they are so greatful just to have someone pet them and talk to them kindly. They look like they aren't dangerous to people, but unfortunatly they would be dangerous to other animals. I hope they can be rehabilitated and the people that are responsible should have to live out the rest of their lives helplessly chained to the ground, forced to fight and be injured and receive no medical care. With no human contact or anyone to interact with until they have to fight and be injured again. I wish we could do that to them, anyone who would do this to something so inocent and defenseless.

I am a owner of 2 WONDERFUL pitbulls and have numerous friends and family with pitbulls. They are such loving animals and would do anything for their owners. I dont understand how anyone can put such a wonderful animal in a position to fight for their lives. Pitbulls have such a bad rap. Prosecute to the fullest!!!!!! Put the offenders in the same position as the dogs. Make them fight for their lives. Its only fair to these loving animals that justice is served.

  • Submitted by Sharon at:June 5, 2009 12:00 AM

As a pitbull owner myself, I find this type of treatment cruel. My pet was rescued of the streets of Louisiana. She could have been bred to fight herself, who knows. She is a loving social intelligent part of my family. She plays happily with large groups of dogs without incident. She is great with my neice and nephew. An animal should be part of a home, in my opinion there is no such thing as a 'outside dog'. All pets should be part of a home, meaning inside on a fluffy bed enjoying the same comforts as we do. Being tied to a stake in a remote area is not indictive of proper care. this was a dog fighting ring. Remember these dogs can be rehabilitated by the proper means. Look at many of the Vick dogs. They have been placed in loving homes, with children and other pets in some circumstances. We spend thousands upon thousands of dollars in our society rehabilitating the dog fighters, why do we not spend the time to rehabilitate the dog? The dog, after all is more capable of leaving the past behind them. It may take time, but we owe them that. I agree that the punishment for such crimes should be more severe. They after all taking a life. These people view life as disposable. LIFE as disposable! I'm sure this extends beyond the dogs they are using to simply make money. Which is why we need to strive to increase the punishment against these crimes. To all those that fight dogs- maybe you should step into the ring and face another human opponent in a death match. Do you feel macho now? Or are you full of fear? Using anogther's life to produce profit is unspeakable whether it be a dog, a rooster or another human. Equally cruel.. equally punishable.

  • Submitted by Manon at:June 5, 2009 12:00 AM

Sickening!! Lock these criminals up for a long time to send a message to other abusers that there's zero tolerance for this brutal activity. We have to break the cycle of abuse somehow. Michael Vick was taken to dog fights as a young child. This will continue unless the punishment is severe enough to make people think twice before they get involves in this blood sport.

I am also glad to see that, for the most part as depicted in the video, these dogs that are trained to fight were so happy to see people and get some attention and loving care. Pit bulls are not the monsters they are made out to be. I hope all of these dogs are able to be rehabilitated and adopted out or at least be able to live out their lives in a former fighting dog sanctuary. Thank you to the ASPCA and the law for giving us the opportunity to see first hand the great work you do. Thank you for saving these dogs.

I wish the laws again st dog fighting were more fierce. If people can do this kind of abuse to animals, just think what they could do to humans. I wish that offenders that do dog fighting would have the same punishment as someone that would commit a crime against humans. The reason that this type of crime happens is only because the dog cannot speak for himself. It takes organizations like the ASPCA to catch these vile, hoorific, terrible humans (if you can call them that) to do the work for the dogs. Please let these offenders do heavy time, not just a slap on the wrist as it most of the time happens. I live for my dogs and could not imagine my life without them. Pit Bulls have a bad reputation thanks to the offenders that fight them. We need tougher laws and we need them now.

It is obvious by their behavior that these dogs are happy to be rescued. The dog with the unhealthy limb grabbed my heart. He wanted help. What is to become of the owners? Education while incarcerated, I hope. Allow them to clean up after animals. Allow them to build dog houses. Day after day. If they receive pay, a portion of it should go to feed for animals. We have to talk about these abuses with our family and friends. Educate, Educate, Educate. If more people know, their power will help stop the cycle of abuse. Talk, Talk, Talk about it. Send our feelings to our Legislators. We vote for them. If they don't listen to us, they know that their days, in Office, are numbered. I do believe in the voting process and became a voting inspector in my state to aid my fellow citizens within the voting process. We have the Power to change things--we do--we can. Vocalize!!!

This is in response to: (Submitted by Cortez916 at: June 5, 2009.) You are an idiot and quite possibly cruel to animals as well or you need better glasses. Most of those dogs looked thin to me and I could see scars and debilitating wounds on several of these dogs. Men do these heinous things to all kinds of animals and humans, too. I doubt there are many women that would do such heinous things. I agree with all the responses that stated these men should have the same treatment done to them as they did to these poor dogs. I have a Rottweiler and a German Shepherd and have friends with pitbull mixes. I have never had my dogs or any of my friends dogs get into fights where they maim each other, especially if they are well-socialized. Another thing, obviously due to your ignorance, it is a well-known fact that dogs are pack animals and live in a pack. They are not meant to be tied in the woods on very short and extremely heavy chains. (another thing attributed to dog fighting which you obviously missed!) I hope someone ties you in the woods and lets you be "well fed", tied to heavy chains and using exercise equipment to keep you "fit!!"

What a witch hunt! There are too many knee-jerk reactions based on unfounded, and unwarranted assumptions going on here. You all have already convicted the owners from the outset of the "investigation". This breed of dog will get into inadvertent unintentional fights sooner or later. I only saw one dog with some POSSIBLE dogfight injuries (1/25+). Could it be an accidental dog fight? Thats why anyone with any knowledge of the breed will keep "breaking sticks" to split dogs who get into it. In thier infintie wisdom HSUS will consider it dogfight paraphernalia?! Exercise equipment... must be dog fighting if they allow their athletic dog to exercise! All those dogs looked well fed, and were calm submissive animals hardly indicative of systematic abuse. Debbie says, "I am crying from seeing those dogs cower when people were coming toward them" What do you want, for them to bite and growl snarl and snap? Maybe your dogs jump on you and strangers and hump, pull, and dominate you, but a properly adjusted well tempered dog should be calm and submissive to ppl for the most part. You should be crying that the "animal loving" HSUS is going to murder more APBTs based on extreme prejudice and willful ignorance. Declare doggy genocide why dont you. Anyone breeding APBTs who stakes thier dogs apart (safety) exercises them regularly (health), keeps and administers meds, ect is surely a dog fighter! Lets murder thier dogs!

It just breaks my heart seeing these poor dogs treated they way they are and yet they still wag their tails. Its amazing the uncondidtional love that animals will give better than some humans. i want to thank all the people who work so tiredlessly to do what they can I know I couldn't it just makes me angry and i couldn't handle it emotionally. again thank god for all at the aspca and i will continue to give every month so that you can do your work.

I am hoping and praying that they SCUMBAGS get what is coming to them!!! Those poor dogs. The video brought tears to my eyes. I hope the dogs are taken into custody and given a chance to find loving homes. They ALL deserve that!! Will this ever end? Thanks to all who helped in making this bust and God willing, we'll get the others out there and put them away! Noone or Nothing deserves to live like this!!

As you watch the video and the dog's tails are wagging it breaks your heart. It goes to show that these dogs aren't vicious animals, they seem to know they are going to be rescued. I hope the criminals pay dearly for the torture they destowed on these animals. Thank you ASPCA. Great job!!!!!!!

Good job ASPCA! It is so sad that people can't just live an honest life and have to try to make a living at the expense of the life of an innocent creature, and to sell drugs on top of it. I just don't understand the callous and hardened hearts that can live treating an animals this way day in and day out as if they were nothing more than an accessory. I think it would be very fitting as part of their punishment to have to spend several hours a day a couple times a week at the local animal shelter cleaning out kennels, walking the dogs, doing laundry,ect... I also hope that the judge in this case take a serious look at this and sees it for what it is...WRONG and does more than just slap them on the wrist.

It was so obvious that these dogs were not people aggressive. I pray that they will be given a second chance at life. These poor dogs obviously were putting such faith in their rescuers. I pray that their rescuers will not become their destroyers. Just seeing how sweet and affectionate pits can be from this video is WONDERFUL PR for a breed that can be SO WONDERFUL. My pitbull Stella is the best dog I have EVER had. In fact, I know I will never again adopt a dog that isn't a rescue, and I will probably never adopt a dog other than a pit.

..as long as monsters like Michael Vick are accepted back into society and back to their fame&fortune jobs after being sentenced to a ridiculously short amount of time behind bars, cruelty to animals will be enforced as a 'cavalier's delict"."Boys will be boys" kind of a thing. Knowing thatviolent monsters, sociopaths like that, who have no empathy for another being, usually proceed to cruelty to humans (listen to the 'lyrics' of rap music!!) I say the laws need to be drastically chnaged. Off with their heads.

What gets me is the fact that these dogs are so happy to see people! They bark and wag their tails, they cuddle with the rescuers. It breaks my heart to think that most if not all of these fighting dogs may be put down because of their training...it is through no fault of their own.

Those who abuse these beautiful dogs are scum and I hope the law will prosecute them to the fullest and get tough on animal cruelty. Despite the cruelty these dogs have endured, they wag their tails and seem genuinely sweet. Thank you ASPCA for all you do.

Bear now is my faithful companion and treats me with respect and I treat him with respect. These people that abuse shot be tied up no food no water and made to fight so they can feel the ever lasting scars that the poor animals felt.

It really disgusts me on how people gain any type of pleasure watching these dogfights. I know they do it for the money, and they consider it a sport. How can they torture these poor helpless animals that way. We need tougher laws in place to prosecute these worthless low lifes. I hope these loving animals can be rehabilitated and end up in loving caring homes. You can see how happy they are just knowing that they are being rescued. ASPCA keep up the good work and I hope that someday soon all this will stop.

If the individuals that treat animals in such horrendous manners were subjected to the same treatment, animal cruelty would suddenly be a crime of which you would not want to be convicted. May discourage more outrageous behaviour of sick people who have absolutely no regard for life at all. Have them lined up in small cages or barrels as in this video, leather collars around their necks, putrid water and little food to eat and let dogs walk up and down in front of these people!!!!! The small amounts of fines and imprisonement is punishment???? I don't think so!!!!!!!

Thank God you are there helping these poor animals. I just don't understand why there aren't laws to finally banish dog fighting and puppy mills. This brought tears to my eyes, i cannot belevie the conditions these poor dogs were living in. You could tell these dogs were not vicious, their tails were wagging so much they were falling off. We need laws, we need to have low cost services for spaying or neutering animals, we need to make other people aware of this horrible situation. I pray that you are able to help these poor dogs by making them healthy and finding them a forever home. I hope my monthly pledge helps in a small way, and I thank God for people and organizations like the ASPCA that are the voice of the unheard. God Bless!

this is man's sinful nature to treat animals thus.Be comforted in the fact that these men will stand before a greater court and be judged. That JUDGE WILL SAY, DEPART FROM ME I NEVER KNEW YOU into everlasting judgement.I always wonder why we use the expression " they behaves like animals" no no, animals do not behave like humans, they do.not know nor would they ever act so cruelly as we humans. These men should be taken into the wilderness with no weapon of any kind and left to learn how animals really behave, they would learn a thing or two.Unfortunately a Judge will as per usual give them a slap on the wrist and they will be back dog bateing in a very short while. Please I beg of you jail these men with hard labour for many years. To look at the photograph of this once beautiful dog god makes me ashamed to be part of the human race which God in his Love made after his own likeness for us to have dominion over the animals and to care for them not to treat them with such cruelty.

In reading all the comments, I noticed Gabe had something to say about everyone patting the ASPCA on the back for killing these dogs....what?! Even if these poor dogs do have to be put down, it's much better than living the life they were living. Pit bull fighting is a horrible thing, imagine what a scary life these dogs lived. And you can see in the video, they just want to please people. I am an owner of 2 beautiful APBT's, both are rescues. I have 4 boys, also, and I do not worry about them around my kids. This is one of the best breeds to own, provided you treat them with the respect they deserve. They are extremely loyal and loving, and I can't imagine just throwing them in a ring together just for the hell of it. These 2 pansies that got arrested better be seeing the walls of a prison cell for a long, long time. Too bad the justice system won't allow us to throw them in a pit with some vicious, rabid dogs. That would be the ultimate justice.

I can't fathom the comceprt to why people have to be so cruel to animals. Dogs that are made to fight, made to be breeded over and over again for money not love and then be caged and ignored is just horrible!! I cry everytime I see cruelty or watch it on this site or TV or get something in the mail(because I am into all the org. that can protect the animals). It makes me sick to my stomach to now that animals of all kinds are out there being abused, neglectd and they themselfs have no way to prevent it. If there was a law that could be more strict for the sake of the animals I would do my best to make it happen(and am now still trying) God bless to all the animals that are not loved and that are abused I am there for you!!! Please world help them we are there voices!!!!!!!!!

The Cavalry is here! Thanks to the ASPCA for all that they do! I'm sitting here at my office with my sweet dog next to me as I watched this piece(we bring Tucker to work with us), and I had to pick him up and hug him after seeing that. It breaks my heart and sickens me at the same time to see what horrors that people can visit on animals all for greed. Still, even after all of the fighting, these dogs were so kind and responsive to people. I think the animals are more civilized than many people. I hope that these people suffer some serious punishment!

It's a sad thing when people can think so little of animals and their feelings and rights. What is this world coming to? Animals that depend on us for LOVE, companionship food and a warm home environment and then to have dirt bags like this exist. And dogs love us unconditionally. No matter what we do to them. Of course this is going to be a misdeamenor and they'll probably be slapped on the wrists and told not to do it anymore then move and start all over again. Why can't laws be more strict. The laws need to be changed to help to protect these defenseless animals and make the punishment to match the crime. It's to bad the people that do this can't be put in the same situations they put the dogs in and be treated exactly the same way the treated the dogs. Heavy chains around their necks, no shelter, no food and have their ears cut off with a pair of scissors. Let them be bitten and let the wounds get infected. Why must we allow them their rights when the dogs aren't going to be allowed theirs. What a crime.

These dogs are great dogs, it's not their fault they fight ,they were raised by these "people" to do this to survive. If they think this is sport, lets make these guys have to dothe same "kill or be killed". My family has had pit bulls for years, not one of them ever fought with other animals. They love people and dogs and cats.Since these jerks didn't get the message after the Michael Vick incident I hope they get worse punishment.
