On March 24, the ASPCA assisted the Federal Bureau of Investigation, United States Attorney’s Office and local law enforcement agencies in a federal dog fighting raid that resulted in the seizure of nearly 100 dogs from multiple properties in Missouri, Kansas and Texas.

Yesterday, at a federal court in Kansas, justice was served. Two individuals connected with last March’s raid learned that they would serve time in prison, pay large fines and perform community service for their roles in the illegal enterprise.

Pete Davis Jr., 38, was sentenced to 16 months in prison and Melvin Robinson, 42, was sentenced to 10 months after pleading guilty to charges related to dog fighting. Davis and Robinson were also ordered to perform 50 hours of community service and pay $430,919 to the ASPCA for the care of the dogs seized. Both Davis and Robinson are also banned from owning dogs for three years following their sentences.

“The ASPCA is proud to have helped secure justice for the dogs involved in this case,” says Tim Rickey, Vice President of ASPCA Field Investigations and Response. “Thanks to the persistence of the FBI, U.S. Attorney’s Office and Missouri State Highway Patrol, these individuals are finally answering for the suffering they caused these dogs. Dog fighting is a horrific crime, and we encourage the public to continue to report suspected dog fighting activities to local authorities.”

The ASPCA provided daily care, medical treatment and enrichment for the animals seized in the raid before placing the majority of the dogs with rescue groups to be made available for adoption.

The sentences of only 10 & 16 months are a joke. The fine that they will probably not pay back hopefully will result in more jail time . But judges need to hand down much more severe sentences. When you think of the horror inflicted on hundreds of dogs tortured, starved and left to die much more time locked up would still not be enough. And as everyone else has noted - anyone involved in this case should NEVER be permitted to own a goldfish - 3 yrs and they'll be back to their evilness.

I'm glad those two losers were sentences, but only 18 and 10 months? Even Michael Vick did more time than that. And they can own a dog after 3 years? They should NEVER be allowed to own a cockroach, much less a dog, cat, horse anything.

And they should do at least 7 years in jail.

Animal protection laws are a joke. These are the idiots that need to do long term prison time. Prisons should be for violent people. Dog fighting is a horrific crime, all abuse of helpless beings is the highest level of violence. The only way to stop this crap is prison time in the years not months. A national animal abuse register and laws that keep them from ever owning animals again and life long ban from hunting or owning guns. That's a law that could change what's happening now and stop the abuse of animals, women and children. This includes any person that attends or knows of abuse happening then not reporting it. You're either part of the solution or YOU ARE THE PROBLEM.

How do people have the guts to do such things. it just makes me mad

They should never be able to own animals again. They'll probably go back to they're old habits. The law needs to be changed.

What is wrong with these judges and laws?Ten years in jail and never be allowed to be near any animal.

They should never be allowed to own another animal period! And they should've gotten more time.

people that are caught doing this to animals.. should be pinned against each other .. to fight to the death.. .. I hate animal abuser's...!!

The prison time is a joke and they should never be allowed to own dogs again. They need to be listed on a National animal offender list and should never be allowed to hunt or own guns. Until we take the act of cruelty to animals more serious it will continue. Blessings to those that care for and save these beautiful helpless beings.

I would like to know who owns a guinea pig and what is its name.
