Dog Dies from Fractured Skull—ASPCA Arrests Suspect

Monday, February 21, 2011 - 4:00pm

“This was a senseless attack on an innocent animal,” says Stacy Wolf, Vice President and Chief Legal Counsel for Humane Law Enforcement.

Early this morning, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Agents arrested Queens resident Jerry Melendez for beating his five-year-old Chihuahua, Spotye.

The investigation began on February 10, when ASPCA Agents responded to a call from a local animal hospital. A Chihuahua suffering from serious trauma and multiple seizures had been admitted by his owner. Spotye had to be euthanized due to the extent of his injuries.

The remains were signed over to the ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital for a necropsy. Results revealed that the Spotye had sustained a fractured skull caused by blunt force impact, and suffered from hemorrhage to his left eye.

“This was a clear-cut case of violent abuse,” says Wolf. “Animal cruelty is a serious crime, and we are doing everything we can to see that the victims receive justice.”

Melendez, 33, was arrested by ASPCA Special Agent Debbie Ryan and charged with one count of aggravated animal cruelty, a felony. If convicted, he faces up to two years in jail and a $2,000 fine.

After my last tour of Iraq and retiring from the Army, I was blessed with a service dog; a beautiful Borador named Bella. She is my life and she is my family. I would stop a bullet for her as she would for me. In most cases, people don't learn from jail because most people who would beat an animal with a hose have probably been there many times. Sometimes, the only thing people understand in order to change their behavior is to empathize and feel how their behavior would feel directed at them. If beating someone with a hose because they beat a poor animal with a hose is found offensive to some people, try going to some third world countries and discover what other human beings do to each other on a daily basis. Beating someone with a hose for this kind of behavior is NOTHING! And, it's not revenge. It's learning and it's teaching; learning how it feels to be on the other end of that hose, and teaching that it really does hurt. God is to man as man is to animal!!

What is this? ASPCA has "Special Agents"? They "Make arrests?" Authorized by Who may I ask? Let me just make this ONE simple point. You crazies may get away with stuff like that in New York but do not try it in the rest of America. "Special Agents" my rear end. HolyCrap what is this world coming to? You people are just plain NUTS.

this man is scum

Good on you William. People that abuse animals should not only be subjected to something as MILD as simply prison but should be made to feel pain as they brought the animals. I love how complete idiots like *Judy* and *Curtis* comment on your reactive action as though they were there and had any idea of what needed to be done to stop this cruel man.
