Dog Dies from Fractured Skull—ASPCA Arrests Suspect

Monday, February 21, 2011 - 4:00pm

“This was a senseless attack on an innocent animal,” says Stacy Wolf, Vice President and Chief Legal Counsel for Humane Law Enforcement.

Early this morning, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Agents arrested Queens resident Jerry Melendez for beating his five-year-old Chihuahua, Spotye.

The investigation began on February 10, when ASPCA Agents responded to a call from a local animal hospital. A Chihuahua suffering from serious trauma and multiple seizures had been admitted by his owner. Spotye had to be euthanized due to the extent of his injuries.

The remains were signed over to the ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital for a necropsy. Results revealed that the Spotye had sustained a fractured skull caused by blunt force impact, and suffered from hemorrhage to his left eye.

“This was a clear-cut case of violent abuse,” says Wolf. “Animal cruelty is a serious crime, and we are doing everything we can to see that the victims receive justice.”

Melendez, 33, was arrested by ASPCA Special Agent Debbie Ryan and charged with one count of aggravated animal cruelty, a felony. If convicted, he faces up to two years in jail and a $2,000 fine.

I totally agree with William do what they do to the animals and impose a life sentence, these sick psychos don't deserve to walk the streets.

Jennifer

I prefer Animals to Humans, may animal abusers rot in Hell

Curtis

Right...because animals NEVER commit any violent and cruel acts.

Suspino

Somebpdy needs to slap the sarcasm out of curtis.

To hit any animal. let alone a little dog like that , hard enough to crack it's skull is callous and cruel, jail time and force them to work at an animal shelter for free .

Curtis

True, if that's actually the facts. We know the animal was severely injured, but from this article I didn't see evidence or proof that the individual is actually guilty of a crime.
He hs been arrested and accused, not yet proven.
Was his side of the story told? was it an accidental injury?
How many times have we seen parents charged with child abuse for injuries sustained in accidents? It happens, and this might be the case.

If he's guilty, I hope he gets the full sentence. But it's not right to convict someone in the court of public opinion until all the facts are known and a jury of his peers has a chance to review the facts and come to a determination.

Joel

Yeah, I guess the dog tripped and fractured his skull. Happens all the time.

Mike

"ASPCA Special Agent Debbie Ryan" okay, I don't agree with abusing animals but why in the name of all things good and holy does the ASPCA have "Special Agent's?" That is just stupid.

Mary

This makes me SO sad and SO upset: Anyone who could abuse an innocent animal should get back what he dished out. Too bad the guy didn't beat him to DEATH with the bat. Then, he'd never ever hurt an animal again. We need "an eye for an eye" philosophy in this country. Maybe then, the idiots would think twice before doing something so horrible. The piece of shit son of a bitch will go to hell. Too bad he's not there already.....
