The official competition period is August 1 through October 31, when all 50 contestants will start tracking their progress. To qualify for the grand prize grant, shelters need to save a minimum of 300 more animals from August through October 2010, compared with the same three-month period in 2009. Beyond that, the winner will be the shelter that saves the most additional animals during the same time period. The ASPCA will also grant $25,000 to the shelter that most engages its community to promote pet adoptions and reunite lost animals with their pet parents. Winners will be announced in December 2010. Stay tuned to ASPCA.org for the latest news about the ASPCA $100K Challenge.

This is great BUT now it is October and many of the shelters are lowering the cost of adoptions to meet the quota. What a disaster!! This is the month that the crazy people try to get animals for Halloween. So now you are making this cheap and easy for these shelters desperate for the $100K? Can't you put an alert out to the shelters that they cannot reduce prices???? If a person cannot afford to pay an adoption fee, they cannot afford to CARE for the pet! We all know this. Have someone do some googling. One shelter To find more homes, the SPCA has reduced adoption fees for all cats and large dogs. Cat adoption fees are $15 and that fee is reduced to $5 for cats that are more than 7 years old or for adopters who are more than 60 years old. Any dog weighing more than 30 pounds can be adopted for $60. One shelter is GIVING away cats and kittens this Saturday and all over 6 months are only $10 this month. That seems smart in OCTOBER. Dogs 60 lbs will be rots, dobs, labs, BLACK dogs. UGH. WHAT is innovative about lowering the cost? We all know that if people are not willing or able to pay for the life, chances are they will not value it. Next year, if you do this again, perhaps you could have the contest end earlier in the year and hence, avoid the dangers of October. And make a rule that the shelters cannot make any adjustments in prices beyond their normal costs. I do think this is an outstanding idea but it needs some better parameters.
