Breaking News: Dog Fighting Bust in Wisconsin

The ASPCA is currently on the ground assisting the Milwaukee Police Department and the District Attorney of Milwaukee County with a multi-site dog fighting raid in the City of Milwaukee. Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission is transporting, sheltering and caring for the dogs.

Today, eight search warrants were executed at eight crime scenes, where 23 suspected fighting dogs were seized. Investigators also discovered blood on basement walls as well as other evidence of dog fighting, including treadmills, wound treatment supplies and muscle building supplements.

Experts from the ASPCA Field Investigations & Response (FIR) team are on hand to assist with evidence collection and documentation. The ASPCA has been assisting local authorities with this dog fighting investigation for nearly a year.

Dog fighting is a felony in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The ASPCA is committed to eradicating the blood sport. We have designated April 8 as the first National Dog Fighting Awareness Day to advance the conversation about dog fighting, and to encourage animal lovers across the country to take action against this brutal form of cruelty.

Please join the movement and take a stand. And stay tuned to for more information about this developing case.

Just to clear things up - I've been following this since day 1 of the first raid, which was actually June 10, 2011 and not 2009 like some people here have mistaken. On that day, 6 dogs were taken (seized). Since then, there's been up to 16 long term holds because of these inter-related fight cases. MADACC (Animal Control in Milwaukee) just took in 22 more. The ASPCA has been working (according to articles I've read) on the fight bust beginning a year ago. MADACC remains the caretaker for all of these dogs until such a time as a guilty or innocent verdict comes through in each individual case. I really hope the ASPCA can help with their enrichment during this process, and eventually help take/rehab those that can be rehabbed. Thank you!

It's great that they were caught, but I feel it took them way too long to investigate. What goes into the investigation that lasted almost a year long? I hope those dogs find a new home, and they were able to save them. Hopefully none of them will have to be put be down. They call dogs animals, those type of people are the animals. They better make them pay, big time. Maybe the person who sets the laws about animal control needs to find another type of job. Obviously he/she doesn't get it, or even care.

I hope the monsters responsible for this atrocity are forced to suffer as much as the dogs they tortured. Lock these monsters up and throw away the key.

I do hope that these so called human beings are put in jail and I hope they suffer as much as the dogs did. I also wonder what will happen to these poor dogs as I am not sure as to USA laws but I do know they would be rehomed after a rehabilitation period if they were in UK. Don't see so much of these type of things though here thank goodness.

You said it Perfectly Christine. All Animals deserve, forever - loving homes!!!
I pray that God can end Dog Fighting and any animal abuse and neglect of all kinds.

Pictures of the dogs that are found at these dog fighting rings should be posted at a site online to see if original dog owners can find their stolen dogs. I will bet many owners would love to get their dog back. All of the dogs should be medically treated too.

What can we do to be more involved in stopping dog fighting. this is something that literally haunts me about animals being forced and taught to fight. The bait dog is the one that my heart aches for the most. I would like to know ways that I can help the fight against this awful crime.
