At the request of the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (Virginia ABC), the ASPCA is assisting with the forensic evidence collection, removal, transport and sheltering of more than 550 birds, many allegedly used for fighting, from three properties near Pound, Virginia.

The seizure was the result of a comprehensive investigation on the illegal manufacture, transportation and distribution of untaxed distilled spirits, illegal cockfighting, and cruelty to animals, according to the Virginia ABC, which set the investigation in motion.

“Cockfighting is a violent blood sport that results in a tragic outcome for these victimized birds,” said Tim Rickey, Vice President of the ASPCA’s  Field Investigations & Response Team. “We’re grateful to the local authorities for pursuing this case and sending a message that cockfighting will not be tolerated in our country.”

A search warrant was executed over the weekend to remove the birds from the three properties, and the ASPCA established a temporary shelter at an undisclosed location, where the birds will be cared for and housed by veterinarians and skilled animal handlers. More than 80 ASPCA responders are working to support state, local and federal law enforcement agencies with the operation.

Cockfighting is illegal in all 50 states. In Virginia, cockfighting, possession of a fighting bird, attending a cockfight, and possession of cockfighting paraphernalia may be punishable as felonies, with each charge carrying a maximum penalty of five years in jail and a maximum fine of $2,500.

So you would shoot a human and "frag" them, but humans should have more rights? What kind of backwoods, uneducated reasoning is that?!!
There is a crime and people have been arrested. That's a fact.
Forcing animals to fight, sometimes to the death, is abuse. People who enjoy watching that kind of violence often go one to be abusers themselves. Also, a well-researched fact.
You really need to get educated. Maybe start with grammar and work your way up.

The fines must be steeper, much steeper, to get through to the idiots that find this blood sport entertaining. These idiots have so many screws loose I'm surprised their heads don't fall off. Why must you find delight at the suffering of others? Thank you ASPCA for caring....the world needs more Angels like you.

Why are we arguing here? Those who believe that fighting birds is a sport will always believe that. As they say, the birds are property. They can do what they want with their property. Interestingly many of these individuals are anti-abortionists. They believe that others property (their own bodies) should not be under their own control, but rather under the control of religious fanatics. Interesting how fanatics of any sort will interpret the rules to suit their own beliefs. If it's against the law, eventually many will be caught. If it is within the law, then they may be doing things that others find repulsive and immoral, but totally legal. This forum allows them to express their opinions, as it does everyone else.

My question is what does the ASPCA do with these birds after they confiscate them, those of you who believe they will continue to take care of them are in a make believe world. They will euthanize them because they certainly can 't place them together in the same area. These types are roosters are natural fighters, they are not trained to fight. They are conditioned to fight, and no one wants to see their bird die because they need them to breed. These birds are treated better than a lot of children are treated.

The mentality of these "chicken guys" is appalling and frightening. This portion of the population has not moved into the current century. It is WRONG, Morally wrong according to God's law to kill ANYTHING for fun. Not to even discuss the fact of long drawn out fighting of animals resulting in pain, crippling and death. To take money or pleasure in this kind of deviant behavior, means you will answer to God one day, so PREPARE.

So charge them with $2500 dollars for every single bird who was fought and 5 years in jail for each bird as well
...but that will never happen. Unfortunately he or they will get minimal sentences because that is how the animal world is in the south. Its rough down there and the laws are not in place for the animals.
