ASPCA Helping Care for 63 Neglected Horses in Spokane, WA

Thursday, November 21, 2013 - 1:00pm

The ASPCA’s Field Investigations and Response team is currently on the ground in Spokane, Washington, assisting Spokane County Regional Animal Protective Services (SCRAPS) with the sheltering and daily care of 63 horses seized Nov. 15 as part of an animal cruelty investigation.

ASPCA responders will remain in Spokane, an ASPCA Partner Community, for at least the next 30 days to nurse the horses to health before their placement with various rescue groups for adoption. The ASPCA is also providing a $5,000 grant to SCRAPS to help cover expenses related to the horses’ care.

SCRAPS officials discovered the severely emaciated and dehydrated horses, who had no access to water or acceptable food, on an abandoned property. Eleven horses in critical condition were taken to a local veterinarian for immediate medical attention. The remaining horses are being cared for at the Spokane County fairgrounds by SCRAPS and ASPCA responders. Agencies assisting the ASPCA with care and sheltering include: Days End Rescue (Woodbine, Maryland); Code 3 (Longmont, Colorado); Equine Emergency Rescue Unit (Overland Park, Kansas); and Washington State Animal Response Team (Enumclaw, Washington).

Local authorities have issued a warrant for the arrest of the property owner on charges of animal cruelty in the first degree and transporting or confining animals in an unsafe manner. The suspect has a history of animal cruelty charges, but has ceased appearing in court for proceedings related to these prior charges. Her current whereabouts are unknown.

If you’ve given to the ASPCA recently, from the bottom of our hearts: thank you. Caring for this many horses is an enormous undertaking and a huge commitment, but we are determined to be there for animal victims of cruelty whenever they need us. If you haven’t yet given to the ASPCA lately, please consider doing so today. On behalf of animals across the country, thank you!

Paul, honestly, pathetic? Horses are good for riding and they are actually useful.

What will they do to u if u abuse horses

Heartless bastard.
What are you even doing on this site?
This site is only for people who love and care for animals and want to help them.
So you can just go back to the depths of hell.

The situation and the abuser is pathetic! These amazing animals when held in captivity (unfortunately) depend on humans to care for them. Thank you ASPCA and everyone who offers assistance to ensure they aren't left to depend on someone so pathetic. You are ALL amazing!

Punishment for neglecting these beautiful, innocent animals should be harsh.
I keep waiting and hoping that the new Pope, and pres. Obama, will come out and make a strong statement against all animal cruelty,....domestic, wild, farm. What can they lose? Think of the good it might do...

The whole situation here is both sad and pathetic. I can only pray that they find the property owner who left these poor horses, and properly charge her and incarcerate her! In the meantime, we should all band together to support the ASPCA in their cause and to donate to the care of these horses. Please help!

Make the owner pay for the damages... it's called "restitution". Way better than relaxing in a cushy prison cell at the tax payers' expense.

I just want to say thank you to all of the rescue organizations that are stepping up to the plate to help these beautiful animals have the life they deserve to have. It's unfortunate that they had to endure this cruelty, but thank god for organizations like those who are helping. I don't have a lot myself to give but I still gave $50. If we had more people that care about animals I guess we wouldn't have to donate anymore because there would be no cruelty. Let's all pull together and stop these terrible acts instead of arguing over who is and isn't pathetic. The situation is horrible and there are so many more stories out there like this one...If everyone of us pushes our politicians towards changing the abuse and cruelty laws the animals would be much safer. I hope all of you respond to emails to our politicians and if you haven't signed up with HSUS to help their cause you may want to consider it, they also help many animals from abuse and slaughter. It is time we all lend a hand in helping the animals.

I thank you for your sincere efforts to save these beautiful horses. At present I can not provide any financial help to you, but I will sign anything and everything in order to first, to save these horses, and second to punish these morons that mistreated these darlings.
Thanks for your efforts again...
