ASPCA Happy Tails: A Virtual Match

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 - 10:45am

It’s a classic “love at first sight” story—while browsing Facebook, Aurora Bergmann saw a post featuring Berry, a special pit bull terrier in need of a home at the ASPCA Adoption Center in New York City. Bergmann felt Berry’s picture was posted just for her. According to the post, Berry would thrive with lots of room to roam and a canine companion—two things Bergmann had plenty of.

A country life with Bergmann’s family—including their four dogs—seemed like a perfect fit. The Bergmanns had adopted and rescued three of their four dogs, and when they visited the ASPCA Adoption Center in New York City for the first time in October, they were on a mission to meet Berry and take her home.

“It gives us joy to be able to help a dog,” Bergmann says.

It was immediately clear that Berry was happy to be home—and she quickly became comfortable in the family’s fur-filled household.

“When we come home, she wags her tail and gives us kisses,” Bergman says. Berry loves spending her time romping around outside on the Bergmann’s land, and is coming around to spending time inside the house, too.

She plays with the four other dogs, but is especially chummy with a pit bull mix. Bergmann’s son rescued a sweet pit who had been abandoned by the side of a highway in New Jersey, and it warmed the family to the pit bull breed.

“Now we realize what wonderful dogs they are,” Bergmann says.

We couldn’t agree more. We think Berry is one lucky pooch!

There are many more sweet Berry's out there to be adopted, just go to your local rescue shelter and you will see. Bless you for rescueing Berry, you will be very happy with her for many years to come, and i can just see the smile thru her eyes. I had a pitt bull mix, he was the love of my life, he unfortunately passed away, going on two years now, and his birthday just passed, October 23rd. When we met at a shelter, it was love at first site. I knew there was something very special about him. I am disabled due to a stroke, and he was always by my side, i had a very weak right arm/hand and he had a problem with his right paw, he was also disabled, so we helped each other, its so sad how people perceive these breeds, i got mine at six months and went thru basic training with him, he was so smart and goofey at the same time, when i was sad he lay by my side, he helped me when i was having a seizure, and he stayed right by my side when i lost my mom to breast cancer, he would look at me with the same sad eyes as if to say "you will make it thru this". We would go just about everywhere together, we would have our routine in the morning on the weekend and go to the local donut shop where everyone knew him as we would go thru the drive-thru, they would pay attention to him and forget my order! He was a loveable silly, special kind of friend. A friend you would want around you in happy and sad times. So I say to you who adopted Berry, please enjoy every moment in time, you will not be disapointed.

So good to read so many positive entries on my one and only breed of dog, the pitt bull! I am always thrilled to read a story of this wonderful loving dog finding a home with people who respect the breed and will give the dog the love it deserves. In my lifetime I have owned 4 wonderful pitt bulls, and each and every one of them has touched my heart and the hearts of many. Currently we have two, Chance and Nena both age 11. All my pitties have been rescued and all my dogs have blessed my life with their loving and caring nature. Hurray to this family and to all out there who tend to this misunderstood breed. Jo

I think it is wonderful that number one, you adopt, not shop. Number two that you give pitties a chance. I have one furry grandbaby who is a pitttie mix and one who is a pure pittie puppy. I love them SO much. They love their grandma too. I love getting furry baby baths from them and giving them all the hugs I can. xxxooo
