Texas is known for doing things big, and saving lives is one of them! In just over a year, The Humane Society of Flower Mound (HSFM) has transported hundreds of at-risk dogs from North Texas to upstate New York via the “Love on Wheels” relocation program. In fact, HSFM just celebrated its 500th dog saved through this important program.

The all-volunteer rescue in Flower Mount, TX, moves dogs from overcrowded North Texas shelters to Helping Hounds, a partner agency in DeWitt, NY, where there is greater demand.

Stacy Smith, Vice President of Animal Advocacy at HSFM, credits much of the success of Love on Wheels to the extensive veterinary care the dogs receive prior to transport—care made possible by an ASPCA grant. The ASPCA is proud to have helped provide some of the funding that made this vital veterinary care possible.

Smith adds that in addition to the veterinary care, placing dogs in local foster home for two to four weeks prior to transport greatly decreases the chance that a sick animal might be transported.

Kathy Gilmour, Director of Helping Hounds, says that from the minute the dogs arrive, “they are overwhelmingly embraced. There are lines of adopters out the door when a truck arrives—it doesn’t matter if it’s raining or snowing, they are here waiting.”

Gilmour says the partnership started out with just 10 dogs, but that number quickly grew. On the most recent transport there were 52 dogs—22 of them were adopted the first day, with the rest finding homes a few days after arrival!

Thanks to Love on Wheels, North Texas dogs are heading to happier futures.

The ASPCA is the nation’s second-largest animal welfare grant-maker. Visit our ASPCApro grants page for more grant highlights and for application information.
