ASPCA Arrests Brooklyn Woman over Starved Chihuahua

We’ve wanted to tell you about Vampiro for some time, and you won’t believe what he’s been through. In January, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Agents responded to a call from NYC Animal Care & Control about a six-year-old Chihuahua who had been abandoned in a pet store.

The dog, Vampiro, was just skin and bones. At the ASPCA Animal Hospital, veterinarians found Vampiro to be emaciated, dehydrated and suffering from an untreated skin ailment, all caused by prolonged inadequate nutrition. He was also found to be blind. Our vets gave Vampiro IV fluids, medication, water and a balanced diet right away.

Meanwhile, AC&C told us that Vampiro had been adopted in 2006 by Brooklyn resident Venus Laventure, 50. On February 25, the ASPCA arrested Laventure. She was charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty. If convicted, she faces up to one year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. She is due in court on May 13.

After a few months at the ASPCA, Vampiro is doing much better. In fact, he’ll soon be made available for adoption—and his future family is in for a treat! Vampiro is a sweetheart who loves to give doggie kisses.

Yes we need to change the laws. the only way to do that is to write your congressmen ALOT and maybe collectivly come up with enogh $$$ to hire lobbist which should also be illegal

She should never be allowed to touch animals EVER again >:(!

Why is animal cruelty just a misdemeanor? She'll just get a slap on the wrist and go out and get another victim. The laws need changed!

I truly Hope she gets the max in jail.

it would be nice if the 1 year prison time would be (10 yrs.) with no food or water or medical attention and let her see how it feels to be starved and neglected. But we all know that wont happen. We can only wish.

The problem with vilifying this owner and imposing punishment is that this dog could have been just killed by his owner. The thing we have to look at , as hard as it is to do, is that the dog was surrendered to the ASPCA and that is one step more than this owner really HAD to do. How many others are just killed and thrown in the dumpster? Hospitals in our area receive abandoned babies with no penalty. Think about it. If we prosecute dog owners who surrender dogs to shelters, then they will stop surrendering them. They will just kill them. And no one will ever know. Think about it.

Why wait that long to turn an animal in if you can't feed it. Dog food is not very expensive. It's obvious animal cruelty and neglect. Poor baby. I'm glad he is okay and getting better. Chances are he wasn't blind before being starved.

I hope she rots in hell.
