ASPCA Arrests Brooklyn Man over Beaten Shih Tzu

On April 3, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Agents arrested Alex Dykes, 49, for allegedly beating his one-year-old male Shih Tzu mix, Bentley. In September, our agents visited Dykes’ Brooklyn home to investigate a complaint that a dog had been beaten and needed immediate help.

At the residence, Agents found poor Bentley in pain, and they knew something was wrong. They transported him to the ASPCA Animal Hospital for treatment. Our vets treated Bentley with oxygen immediately, ultimately concluding he had a brain hemorrhage and a fractured skull and jaw due to blunt force trauma. He is now recuperating in a foster home.

Dykes was charged with one count of aggravated animal cruelty, a felony, and one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty. If convicted, he faces up to two years in jail and/or a $5,000 fine.

Looking at Bentley’s sweet face, we have to wonder: Who could do this to an animal?

Bentley's abuser/owner is a pure bred COWARD..hurting innocent animals, YES a durn coward, can't beat on someone his own size...I would love to have a chance with these cowards to show them what alot of us really think of them. Punishment to the max. for all abusers, NO slap on the hand...

Anyone can abuse an animal, no matter the color of their skin. As an animal trainer and animal rehab specialist, I see all kinds of cases. I rehab dogs all of the time who have been neglected, abused, tortured, & beaten. Punishments should be more severe. However, our government still view animals as "property". So, until our government views animals as equals, it is likely this will never change. I think human ignorance and arrogance is more at fault here than anything else.

I wish that all animal abusers get maximum fines and maximum sentences. The best punishment would be increased fines and sentences and make them when in public wear signs that say I abused an animal!

Until they make abusing an animal a FELONY and stop viewing them as just PROPERTY, this will continue and the BASTARDS WILL GET OFF SCOTT FREE.....IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE TIME OR PATIENCE THEN DON'T GET AN ANIMAL AND GOD FORBID DON'T HAVE A BABY EITHER!!!!!!!!!!

As part of the offender's fine/sentence the abuser should be made to pay for the animal's veterinarian bill. If they are unable to pay the vet's bill then they should be thrown in jail, or have jail time extended if they're sentenced already.
I agree with everyone in that the punishments are too light for these animal abusers.

I can't understand the mind of someone who would do such unspeakable things to an innocent and trusting animal. Our pets give us so much love. I pray Bentley makes a full recovery and finds a forever home where he can get all the love and care he deserves.

what a scum bag! who in the heck can beat a small lil 5lb dog? that is sickening that he is only getting 2yrs in jail-thats no justice!
