Hershey, before receiving treatment at the ASPCA Animal Hospital

Today the ASPCA arrested Queens resident Grimilda Amil for allegedly neglecting and starving her three-year-old male Yorkshire terrier, who has been recovering under our care for nearly two months.

Amil brought her Yorkie, Hershey, to an ASPCA Mobile/Spay Neuter Clinic on June 27. Alarmed at Hershey’s condition, Clinic staff called our Humane Law Enforcement Agents, who quickly responded.

Amil relinquished ownership of Hershey to the ASPCA, and Agents transported the tiny dog to the ASPCA Animal Hospital.

There, veterinarians determined Hershey— whom they found to be emaciated, anemic and suffering from pressure sores—had been starved. At that time, Hershey weighed just 5.2 pounds. Today he weighs in at 10.1 pounds, a 94% increase!

Hershey is completing his recovery in a caring ASPCA foster home. When he’s ready, he’ll be made available for adoption.

Amil, 55, was charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty. If convicted, she faces up to one year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. She is due in Queens Criminal Court on October 4.

If you suspect you’ve witnessed animal cruelty, please don’t hesitate to report it.

Congrats to the clinic staff and animal cops for moving so quickly. Now, Hershey can be adopted by a loving family!

What did she expect bringing the animal in at that point in time? I agree that she must have some mental deficiency somewhere. She should never be allowed to own an animal again.

I have been hearing horror story after horror story with animal abuse cases. The laws need to get stricter and not allow these monsters to ever own a animal again as long as they live. She is a pathetic monster who deserves to be tortured slowly until she is skin and bones. No animal in the world needs to go through this whether it is cats, dogs, farm animals, wildlife. I pray everyday for defenseless animals out there that are suffering right now due to abuse and neglect and hope and pray someone sees the abuse and calls the authorities. Let people know we are not going to tolerate animal abuse!

The yorkie's former owner should be jailed, fined and banned from ever having another pet. Ruthless people such as this infamous woman are sub-human!

I have a soft spot for all animals but love yorkies young or old. I will adopt Hershey in a minute but he has probaly found a forever home. People are disgusting not only to animals but to each other.

Show her face! I want everybody to know what that loser looks like!

I have recently resued a Silky terrier. I was horrified at how thin she was. She did not even recognize food when offered.
Back yard breaders. Try to keep these dogs a small a possible
for profit. The more small the more money, or so they think.
It just hurts my heart that all of these precious little ones are being starved.

This bitch needs to be made to starve now and let her rot in jail for a long time with no amenities. There is NO excuse for this!!! Hershey needs to be fed, cared for, and PAMPERED LIKE ROYALTY. Anyone who makes a poor animal suffer in any way needs to suffer in return. Pamper Hershey now and hug him!!!!!

There is NO excuse for this. I agree that more severe punishments for abuse are in order, and people who do such things should be banned under additional penalty from ever owning animals again. My husband and I own a Japanese Chin and a Miniature Poodle - both spayed females - who are literally like our children. A few years ago we lost our business and virtually everything we owned. Although times are still hard, we are just now beginning to recover - throughout all of the hard times, our babies have been our constant companions. When things were so hard that we literally did not know if we were going to be able to eat, we ALWAYS made sure that our babies had food before we fed ourselves. I don't expect any special kudos for that - it seems like the only thing to do if you truly love your animals! They depend on us entirely and I would rather suffer myself than see them go hungry. Owning a pet is a commitment for life, and, similar to children since they are unable to provide for their own needs it seems that that commitment dictates that we must see to their comfort before our own NO MATTER WHAT. How could anyone do less for all the selfless, unconditional love that they give in return? It's just heartbreaking to see a beautiful creature like Hershey abused like this.

That poor baby, an eye for an eye. Let Amil know what it feels like to be starved.
